I am not anti drugs. I just feel until correct diagnoses are Dx then drugs should not be given so easily.I also think as a person who has studied Nutrition this can make a big difference in proper body function.Coping should also given.Drugs also quit helping later down the road.
Rda will tell you the proper nutrition that is necessary by age/weight.

Thank you for you and your brothers story. Although this has nothing to do with adhd, Heres a little story about how A phyc drug changed my brothers life.....
For his whole life, he saw his self as a failure, had social anxiety and never ever happy. He eventually led to drugs and was hooked on about every drug you can imagine - a college dropout, no work, no friends, no girlfirends, nothing. The only thing he had (Luckily) was a careing family.
I have Adhd and was diagnosed about a year ago and I started taking adderall (30XR). I was able to sit and talk and not be so bashful about everything. This being said, One day I asked my brother . "What are you going to do with your life".... he said he was miserable and asked what he should do. I told him to get help, it wasnt his fault, You only have one life..... etc. (I would have never been able to sit and talk with him before about this or think on the positive side... thank you adderall.) Anyway, We finally talked to a doctor about all the problems. No drug institute, No Prison.. Just to our primary doc. HE was perscribed paxil. He has been clean 7 months, 3.5 in college and has a hott girl friend - It saved his Life. SO FOR ALL YOU PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT SAY THERE IS NO REASON FOR THESE DRUGS... your wrong, it changes peoples lives.
Excellent! Thanks for sharing!
bman - thanks for that bit of feel-good that you gave us!!
It's always best to hear the success stories - the anti-med people are quite fast to try and influence with horror stories and many don't think to pass on the good side of all this.
bailey - I believe bman was going after the people who say NEVER use meds. You have a personal choice and that's fine. Meds aren't for all but are for many. It's something each person has to decide on themselves. Stories like bmans help people get the nerve up to give it the initial shot that it deserves.
I would love for an anti drug person to read this, i hope they do.
Not everyone who chooses not to use drugs is ANTI-DRUG.But Bailey.... You arent an Anti - Drug person. or are you? Plus i never said that if you dont use it you are considered anti drug person.
I agree with you Bailey. I have had depression and Social anxiety issues for years. After trying Zoloft once, and having terrible side effects, (which my General Practioner at the time insisted could not be occuring.) I was terrified to try any thing else.
The depression and anxiety did not go away, so I finally agreed to trying another anti-depressent which I cannot remember the name of, and It had worse, very scary side effects. It actually made me kind of manic. Anyways, the Dr. would not get back to me about these side effects, and I thought I was going crazy.
Anyways, I was so frustrated, and did not continue with the medication. I started seeing a therapist, and over time I changed Dr's and the two of them convinced me that my life could be better, and I tried Prozac. It worked wonders for me. It was like a light turned on for me, and the medication really has helped.
I take Prozac and AdderallXR now, but I have good Dr's now, that are excellent about following up on my medication progress. I don't feel that the GP that I was going to had any business prescribing these medications. He was a great Dr. for prescribing antibiotics for strep throat, but when it came to mental health issues, not so good.
The right Doctor is key.
I tried some antidepressants after my Dad died. I hated them all. Made me feel on edge and not myself. Panic attacks where bad. I felt like everyone was looking at me. I stopped taking them.
The Ritalin LA I have been taking has been totally different. I love it and my brain tolerates it well.
Ya know, these anti-drug people come here and what they have in their minds is somewhat confirmed because of the stories they read here. For the most part newbies that come here have questions about their meds or their meds aren't working or making things way worse. But the truth is there are probably 100's of thousands of people who don't need to bother coming here for help because they were lucky, their DX was correct and their meds are doing the trick.
But, no, the anti-med people don't even think about that. Instead they want to target adults and parents who are going through h*ll trying to figure things out. And I guess that is what makes me so angry. The last thing a person needs to see is "You are killing your kid with Ritalin" when their child is taking Ritalin.
They make me sick.
