Light really bothers my eyes on a hazy day, to the point that I'm squinting and in need of sunglasses. What's wierd is light on a sunny day is fine and I never where sunglasses. I've never gotten checked for alergies but I just assumed that was what it was. Now I don't know what to think.

Gettingagrip, wow, I really relate to alot of what you're talking about! I can't stand brushing my teeth because it makes me gag! And I like the flavor of some foods like tomatoes and mushrooms but I cannot eat them because the texutre is so ICKY! And sounds have a tendency to resonate through my nervous system, I can't stand the answering machiene beep because each beep sends little electric currents all through my body. It's awful and I get really irritated and fly off the hook to get rid of the sound. Anything you can do for it?lizzy,
My daughter is getting occupational therapy. Joint compressions and skin brushing. Very specialized for Sensory Integration Dysfunction. She is also taking a medication called Abilify which seems to take the edge off for her and also lets her sleep better at night. Since she is only 4 her diagnosis isn't complete. She has symptoms of several other disorders but nothing that can be pinned down at this time.

OMG.
i've always wondered why i gag all the time! i don't know if it has anything to do with this sensory integration dysfunction (which i'm not trying to be callous but when i read that it sounded like some silly rhyming fake illness...hey! it was just the first thing that came out of my brain when i read it! not an assessment! LOL)
i can't stand brushing my teeth. i gag when i wake..all through the morning. i hate that..i also feel like that i'm more sensitive to my environment than others, i thought i was just being paranoid..i swear, after my diagnosis of severe allergies after yrs of thinking its just a rash you would think i'd wake and realize its probably a reall thang..i hate certain light. i had the maintenance ppl get the flourescent bulbs out from over my desk..i was getting headaches. now the one next to my desk is getting the better of me..i feel as though i'll need a baseball cap to work. i have to wear sunglasses or i'm squinting like crazy, even on a hazy day..the light can make me feel dizzy almost. (i'm probably a descendant of vampires!! LOL)
so...i'm sure there is more i just can't remember them and i probably dismiss them without even realizing that.

My son who is 15 now and has down syndrome and he also has alot of sensory issues. He's had ot for years with the skin brushing and joint compressions but he hasn't improved much. When he was a baby he couldn't handle crawling or walking on sand or grass. He is over sensitive in some areas and under sensitive in others. He won't touch anything yucky and he'll only eat certain textures of foods. He still doesn't like his hair brushed. I'm hoping he will eventually grow out of it. Good luck!

I can't stand the flouresent lights either. It's like I can hear them buzzing and I can see the vibrations of the light and I get intense headaches from it. I can't do bright lights either. I am so glad that someone else has the same problem with light on a hazy day! I have to wear sunglasses or I squint and can barely see! I know it weird to other people but it's so nice to not be alone!it didnt have much to do with ADHD Cheeky I was just draining your huge knowledge tanks for a little bit of direction - so thanks. Maybe I misunderstood but I'm not sure what this has to do with ADHD. I agree with Barb and think you should guide your friend towards the Sensory Integration Dysfunction website. Otherwise, we may not be of much help. My daughter has been diagnosed with Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Basically she is oversensetive to her senses. Some people with this problem are sensetive to only certain senses. In my daughters case it is to sound, smell and visually to much light. She is also orally sensitive and gags and barfs at the drop of a hat. When she was little brushing her teeth was hell. It can affect any and/or all of the senses. It sounds as if you friend might have some of these problems. Is this all the time or only sometimes? This affects my daughter to the point that she has ODD tendencies. Basically she is defending herself from her own senses. I had alot of these problems when I was a kid but not to the degree she does. I grew out of most of them. But, I still cut the tags out of my clothes, I can't stand to sit in a dark room and the texture of certain foods still make me gag.rae, I have never heard of anything like that personally but a place to start is to look up web sites on sensory integration dysfunction.

I was tallking to my best friend today regarding this wonderful site and all the information I have gained from it and she asked me to ask you a question.
Sue has always suffered from what she calls Brain Spin. What happens - sense of touch eccentuates to the point that if she puts her hand on her chest it feels like there is a brick sitting on her. And everything gets very very loud. She doesnt have much money to attend doctors etc and 4 kids later she doesnt put her self first any more, but it has always bothered her and me. I thought maybe it could be a form of epilepsy, her homeopath calls it an inward migraine (hmmm) but I was wondering if any of you have ever heard of these "brain spins" before
