I can compete in the lotsa' junk area with the best of you. :)) I have lots and lots of piles everywhere.
People always comment about how clean my house is and how you can eat off my floors. I just laugh and wonder what house they are mistaking for mine. I have just been diagnosed and started treatment for ADD. But I have come to find that I have suffered with it for years. During those years I (like many others have I'm sure) have learned to cope and find tricks to trick others into thinking you have your head on straight.
First trick is to have a dish washer. All dishes go in there until you have a load. Makes the kitchen look less cluttered because there isn't a pile of dishes in the sink. (for dorms they now have small counter top diswashers)
I have put baskets all over the house. Come to find out I was hip on decorating before the trend came about . hehehe.....now you can find cloth lined baskets of all shapes and sizes, I have them in the kitchen, living room, hall, bedrooms, just about everywhere, if you can find ones with lids even better. I cram things in there and then when I leave the room I can take it around room to room and deposit everything where it needs to go.
Swiffer mops are the bomb. Sweep the floor and a quick swipe with the wet swiffer and the floors "look" clean. I certainly wouldn't eat off of them though. Even better is the bissel flip it. One side vacumes and the other mops. If ya'll are anything like me half the battle of cleaning house is getting over the agnozing "getting started" point. Having things like the swiffer, the flip, and such lessens the steps needed with traditional cleaning methods like mop, bucket, fill the bucket, empty the bucket. Can't tell you how many times I've mopped the floor just to leave a bucket full of yucky water sitting by the door for days with the mop still in it.
I'm hopping now that I have been diagnosed and started treatment that I can find other methods of cleaning house instead of the cram and hide it method. I have that one closet that I always pray no one opens when they come over or my jig is up and I'll be found out. And they wonder where they anxiety comes from.
Geeze, forgot something else. I can relate to those that micro organize stuff. There are days that it seems I get nothing done, though I've worked all day at trying to pick up. Start in one room, take something to another room and then get distracted picking up there. I never finish one area. Then I'm beat and feel like I have nothing to show for it. Then there are days that I start wipping the kitchen counter and the next thing I know I'm scrubbing the floor boards with a toothbrush and it's three hours later, I've missed a Dr. appt and I have exactly five minutes to make a fifteen minute trip to pick the kids up from school. Then there's the obsesiveness of doing things a certain way. (Which I have come to find out it's not uncommon for those with ADHD to also have a touch of OCD) The dishes have to be loaded in the dishwasher a certain way, to me it makes perfect sense, to the rest in my family I'm nuts. I think that people with ADD often times feel like their life is so out of control that they pick things that they over control so to speak.
And no, I don't make my bed..........hubby makes the bed most mornings and it's like getting a little hug each morning when I go in to gather laundery or something and see that there is one less thing I have to do that day.

Planegirl,
you have so described me pretreatment!! Halloween, I would open the door only part way because I didnt want trick or treaters to see inside my house!! No one would be invited over -- I would just be too darn embarrassed!!.
How did I get out of the mess? The timer on the oven..
Set your timer for 15 minutes a couple times of day.. do not look at the whole mess.. pick one room, ignore everything else. start at the door and clean your way around the room... no fair looking at anything else!!
I have 3 boxes as I cleaned and I would toss them into those boxes. put away box ( I didnt take the item to where it belonged, I threw it in the box.) Throw away box, and give away box.
Throw away box and give away box went straight out the door.. then all I had was the put away box. Later in the day, I would set the timer again and race myself to see how fast I could put items away! If I didnt know where to put something I would place it in a room that I thought made logical sense to me where it belonged..
sometimes the putaway box became the attic box ;) and I like that when it happened!
Sherry
if u havent worn it in a year throw it out/give it away
if you havent seen it in 6 months throw it out
If it's in the floor, throw it out/give it away.
I've really regreted doing that. I had to purchase a whole new winter wardrobe because I donated all my clothes to goodwill. That was actually an accident, got the Hefty bags mixed up. RayRay - Ya see what ya started?

Planegirl- When I figure out how to send pics on this and show my back room - You will be like "And I thought I had problems."
Kibbles - I have used that strategy too. Only put the boxes and bags in the back room.
Omygosh this thread is funny. Nice pic! LOL and not you're not alone. You have 10 pages of nosey people wanting to know if your bedroom looks just as bad as theirs!
Mine is pretty bad too. In fact, I've post poned a move because I'm soooooo not looking forward in cleaning/organizing this darn mess. It's going to take me days (I'm scared to see what the carpet looks like). It's a good thing I'm single. If I have a date, WE GO OUT! loli wanna see

I came up with it after being an instructional teaching assistant for 1st - 5th graders for a few years. It was so obvious to me how some of the harsh words spoken to the kids by their teachers, negatively affected their self esteem.
Often times I would be taken back to my own experiences as a child, being so unorganized and forgetful, and the things I remember mostly about my teachers was how they made me feel about myself.
The truth some kids have no boundaries at home or values. Being the leader is the hardest job on Earth. Some will do others won't. You can only teach . It's harder when parents expect nothing. I see kids allowed to quit when they first start stuff they are new at.It takes a while to aquire a new skill. Today it's hard cause there is someone who will complain cause they don't like or how it is being done. Trying to please adults is harder. I see it all the time. I have asst. coached soccer, den leader now, subd school teacher in public education. There is always a unsatisfied adult. We all view family life different. We all expect different things from kids. I noticed our kids attitudes got bad after leaving private preschool. There were no bad manners aloud. We are doing the best we can. I just wish professionals would be more helpful. Does anyone make their bed? I never do.
I never do either. It seems like such a waste of time, you are just gonna get into again and mess it up every 24 hours.
One thing that worked for me for a while was a suggestion made by a lady who was teaching others how to organize their houses and such.
She said, follow two rules for cleaning - keep up with your laundry and make your bed. That was it. So I tried it for a while and it worked really well. That was all I worried about each day. It really did stay cleaner for a while. Then I forgot about the rule I guess.
Since I've been doing my exercises from Stopping ADHD, the book I always am talking about, I find that I clean up as I go. I just think about it as I am doing it, and things stay neater. But it's not all there yet. I still have messes all around. It's just that I keep at least one room clean now, and it isn't as hard to get them cleaned up. I know what to do now. I sometimes just do it as I walk through a room, I'll pick things up as I go. But it isn't perfect yet. I've still got months to keep crawling, so we will see.
Use the containers and fill them with things you don't want, and wrap them up pretty!!! j/kI think I need a drink

You will have a selection of using the URL, HTML, EZCODE, Thumbnail. The URL should work. Copy that (and paste) after you click on the add image button here. (Above, 2nd button to last on right side (the tree)
Hope that helps.

I am sooo messy. When I had roomates in my other house I always kept the common areas clean and never had any of my stuff laying around but as soon as you hit my bedroom you'd better watch out. Now that I live on my own I find that my entire house is a mess. I can't afford a housekeeper so the next best thing is to take on a roomate so that I guess I will go back to only having a messy bedroom...but I like living on my own! Oh, what to do! How is it that I can keep it clean when others are around but not do it when it's just me? I always feel so good when I finally get it clean.
By the way, gotta go clean as my brother comes into town on Sat. boy is it going to take me forever to get this place clean.

I am trying to "clean up" my act (no pun intended). My place can seem like - well like Dr. Hallowell says "a bag ladies' place". Stuff everywhere - I start things and never finish.
But - I am getting better (I think). I am moving to a bigger place soon and I'm throwing away things I'd normally packrat along with me. And auctioning off a lot on ebay. Who knows - my goal is to have a couple of suitcases and some furniture. One can dream.
I think because when you finally get there...the bed is the immediate destination.....forget all else. What you do once you're in it is optional.
My wifes youngest son plays with small cars, takes them apart and there are lil pieces all over the place. I wind up stepping on it or someone else does....ooOOUCH!!

I guess it does look better.. just not a priority ya know? Gotta get goin when I wake up, making my bed is the least of my concerns.
Oh, darn. My posting boards are so messy I lost my posts. Did I already post in here? Can anywone remember what I said? Look around for the profoundly sarcastic oprhan around here, and send him home, okay?I was just thinking about my beautiful new bedspread I bought myself for Christmas... it has been on my bed once.
I don't make my bed.. I thought if I had something pretty to put on it that I would.. but nope.. it didnt work
My bedroom stays pretty clean, except for the pile of clothes that end up on the floor from the weeks wearing.. I'm embarrassed to say, they are all mine, but at least they all get picked up once a week on laundry day!

I totally get what you are saying because I'm the same way. I've got boxes of recycling (I keep forgetting to put it out-- like, 6 months worth of recycling boxes and bags), clothes all over the place, boxes of miscellaneous crap stashed in closets for those times I've need to clean in a hurry. So, instead of dealing with any of this crap, I'll clean out a drawer or reorganize coupons or something. Nothing ever, ever gets done.
Make bed? NEVER!
Planegirl - The only way I can get anywhere with a big mess is to pick one small section to focus on and that's it for the day, kind of like if I clean up this one small thing I will have achieved a goal, and then I can move on to the next thing...if I look at a big pile of stuff that I have to do I get really overwhelmed... I have learned to force myself into breaking it down into very small projects that don't all have to get done right away...then eventually it gets done. I hope maybe this will help?
I grew up in a house that was a mess and just crazy crazy, when I got married I had no idea even how to do laundry, it was bad. My hubby is Mr. Clean so many years and arguments later I kinda figured out how to keep the house up but now when I go to my mom's the mess just makes me feel like I am choking... I am like Glen- even if I did sell the extra stuff at a yard sale, I would spend the proceeds at another yard sale down the street. Also, yard sales are way too much trouble. I have a hard enough time keeping things at home organized. When I get in the right frame of mind, which is once in a blue moon, I do better throwing stuff into huge hefty bags, and quickly throwing them away before I have time to change my mind.
I do better throwing stuff into huge hefty bags, and quickly throwing them away before I have time to change my mind.
That's my strategy.
How to you get your spouse to understand if it is not getting used get rid of it. This to me is the leading cause in big messy rooms. If you have less it's less to put up. RNI used to sell my stuff by yard sale every summer oldtimer. But the trouble was that with the cash I'd gotten I'd typically go down the street and see another yard sale with some kitchy thing that I simply HAD to have - then it starts again!! It was actually easier with the wicked bitch of the west - she'd kick me out and pawn my stuff from time to time - saving me the trouble! LOL!!I'm a pack rat.. I admit it.. the best thing in the world I ever did was move.. I had so many trashbags out on the curb, I was embarrassed and actually brought them out a few at a time from my overflowing garage!
That was 2 years ago.. slowly, things became chaotic at my home again.. except the mess was more spread out! LOL
I almost feel guilty for sharing this but I thought that maybe if I did you would all know that there is hope for us "messies'
I clean once a week, I don't get it all done, its not perfect and the closet does remind me of something from the old Fibber Mcgee radio show. BUT, the tables are clean, the floor gets vacuumed and I don't step over stuff.. Ray, my bedroom at my old house looked like yours -- I promise! it doesnt now. I'm crediting this turn around with my ADD treatment -- medical AND behavioral.
The best Christmas present I ever got was this year was when my parents came to stay with me unexpectedly from Florida. I actually asked my mom if she thought I was doing a better job with my home.. her reply was " oh my gosh! 1,000 percent better!"
She then asked me if I thought she had ADD cause she has never been able to keep house as good as I can!! LOL Oh my gosh!!!
All this to say.. keep swimming , keep running, keep trying... you can do it too!!
It took me 40 years of my life to get to this point.
