Do noises drive you insane somedays? | ADHD Information

Thank you for voicing your complaint about noises.  I can't stand noise.   Now that I'm on medication, I seem to be more aware of sound.  It drives me crazy.  I think that I'll have to either walk around with ear plugs or be prepared to move to the rural america.  A lady that I work with inserts "Uh huh. Yah. Uh huh" like she has tourettes syndrome during meetings. Have I heard anything anyone said while she is doing that? No, I'm locked in and practically counting the number of times she does it.  Took Aderall today though, and didn't really notice it. Sweet relief.

I feel better now! I thought I was the only one bothered by "these certain noises"!

# 1 on my list would have to be snoring! My husband sounds like a combination of a train and a car wreak. He dosen't have sleep apnea, so I'm not worried. I just sleep in Tequilas (my parrots) room. But even her huge feet walking around the cage in the morning makes me crazy!

Let's see, also mentioned that irritate the hell out out of me are some accents. Boston is the worst! Where DO they put all those R's they leave out! Other peoples cell phones, (and sometimes my own). A lawn mower when I'm trying to sleep in on the weekends, flip-flops, rap music, static on the phone or ANYWHERE, makes me crazy! And let's not forget the reason I'm up so early, an alarm clock that sometimes makes weird noises! And many, many, more. Not enough time to mention. But atleast now I don't feel so bad, knowing we all have this in common .

I hate most of the sounds on my computer. And, yah...I leave 'em on. Why? I have no idea.

Dixie, I have NO idea how anyone sleeps in a hospital. Drugs?
I can relate to needing a fan for white noise to sleep, it's too cold in winter to use it but during the summer months it's always on at night whether I need it or not - an air cleaner is really good for this white noise as you can use it all year

I find that (especially when I've not had quite enough sleep for a period of time) I find the noise of older fluroescent lights to be excruciatingly annoying, and also the high pitched whine of a TV's CRT I find annoying for most of the time (monitors don't tend to bother me so much, funnily enough).

And what is it about flip-flops? (called thongs here in Australia, but for the purpose of avoiding confusion - as I think thongs are something else in the states ;)) I can remember being incredibly annoyed at the sound ever since I was a kid!

The noises aren't really distracting, just annoying, makes it hard to sit still - which is funny as I'm primarily inattentive ADHD.
Certain *little* noises drive me crazy and wonder if they bother others with ADHD?  the sound of flip flops!  slurping drinks, LOUD noises really bother me, somedays the typing of others on their keyboards!  sometimes I need it SUPER quiet!    Anyone else like this with noises? (hypersensitive to noise??)  tia (thanks in advance)
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, FOR saying it.  People slurping drinks drives me up a tree.  also ice crunchers and candy wrappers.  It has always bothered me and I never knew why.  Are you on any meds?  My kids drive me nuts with the wrapping of fingers and noises.

Flip flops should be outlawed!!! they are the worst!!!also, we have a professor that smacks the hell out of apples.  Crunch, crunch slurp. My answering machine...especially if it goes off before I can get to the phone. It's a love-hate relationship.

Even though I have the volume turned down, I can still hear it doing its "thang" when someone is leaving a message. I'm too cheap to get voicemail.

I hate being in the hospital when all those machines are doing the high pitch beeping sounds.  I have had a lot of operations so that one reason it bothers me so much I suppose.  Moving to rural America won't help. Right now I'm listening to the insanely annoying sound of 5 bazillion crickets or locusts or some other creatures chirping outside and it's driving me nuts! Time to shut the windows, I guess. That will take care of those noisy birds that wake me up at the crack of dawn, too! Today, I hated the sound of our secretary's shoes (flip flops), but she snaps around the office in them.

I HATE the sound of a vacuum. HATE IT.

Hate the sounds of other peoples children screaming.  Hell.

Went to NYC and could not STAND the way they honked for no reason, just HONK HONK HONK HONKHONKHONK!  I was on bad behavior when a truck pulled up behind my taxi. The driver was getting my suitcase out of the back and I guess the truck behind me was in a really pissy mood, so he started blaring his truck horn in my ear. Just one big solid honk the entire time. I finally turned around in the middle of the street and gave him the biggest unladylike flip off you have ever seen in your life. I put my entire soul into it.

You know what???  I can sleep through the LOUDEST man snore (if I love him). My boyfriend snored so loud that the neighbors would laugh about it. It felt sort of comforting and cozy to me, so I would sleep right through it. hahaha

bluebird3838222.9433680556Oh yah...I hate listening to people talk on their cell phones

How about this one?  I hate overhearing people, ahem...trying to procreate. Talk about annoying!
Potato chip bags and people eating them.noises don't really bother me, i learned to tune out any noise not pertaining to what i'm currently doing with no problems when i was young, as a matter or fact i've been known to not pick up the phone because i honestly didn't hear it.

but as far as when i am paying attention, all the noises my computer makes are turned off because i can't stand them, for the longest time i tried to find a keyboard that made no noise but i never could find one that worked well enough so i learned to tune that out as well
I can sleep and read with the TV.  But, just let the rocking chair squeek, my husband snore or my dog(s) lick themselves and I get tense in about 2 seconds.  I litteraly used to push my sister out of bed when we shared a room and she snored.  She remembers me as being really crabby when we were kids.  Poor kid she was 8 years younger so she didn't have a chance.

{Phew} I feel ALOT better seeing more people posting!

I get the TV thing, if I am working at the computer I can not stand the sound of TV so turn if off and work much better with quiet. I need complete quiet when reading something!

The tick tock of a clock

The dripping faucet

Because of our *wiring* it makes sense to me that noises like this would drive us batty more than others who's senses aren't as *heightened* as us. We are wired FASSSSSTER, over stimulis of noise/light/etc. is twice as bad for ADD people. I get stressed twice as bad as some when there is ALOT to do, until I can start knocking things out one by one.

Yep,

I have to sleep with 'white noise' and an eyemask.   Any sound or light and I wake up.  Sucked bigtime when was married because hubby snored and was up and down to the bathroom all night.

And at work, they know I startle extremely easily.  I work in a small office with a closed door.  Most people knock, but there is one person who forgets about 1 time out of 10.  I always shreak and scare the bejesus out of both of us!

i can sleep in teknivals (tekno parties with about 50 000 people and boom boom boom for days) but i can't sleep with people chatting around me and i have to hide my eyes from light or i wake up instantly.

are we mad ?

I agree, it's not the intensity of the noises, it's noises that I can't "get out of my head" such as:

Snoring - my dad snored like a freight train -

Tapping of fingers or some object

Popping knuckles - thank goodness they can only do it ever 5 min

Ticking clocks

Dripping fossetts

All these things have to potential to completely scramble my thoughts

LOL Lizzy we posted dripping fossetts at the same time!

Oh yeah, those high pitched hard-drives...eek

You know what they say... great minds!!!!

I can't stand it when people drum their fingers either, or bang on surfaces needlessly. It drives me nuts! And you were so right on it when you said it scrambles you thoughts, it does the same thing to me! Then I have to start all over and even on meds there are just some things I can't tune out!

BTW, what are we doing up so late anyway???

hey, wouldn't have thought you were affected by so much kind of noises (maybe i should feel lucky ?).

what do your people close to you think about noises which drive you mad, and which of course, they can't hear...

I relate the "white" noise that alows me to concentrate.  When I study I have to have the fan on.  A fan produces the most wonderful "white" noise.  My fan got me through college.  Man, I'm glad i'm not alone.

Mens loud voices - grrrrrrrrrr

alarm clocks

mobile  phones yuk

Oh noise at work or while I'm reading will make me loose all my concentration.  I mean any little noise...typing on a keyboard, conversations, flip flops...I have to have complete quiet when I'm reading but when I'm working or writing I have to have music on.  I actually had to fight to get headphones at my last job.  Just something about what I was doing and having upbeat music playing and no other noise just kept me going at a good pace etc.  Now I can do some writing and some work without even music...guess that means I'm getting better and better...lol

(hypersensitive to noise??)  tia (thanks in advance) hmmm, i don't feel it this wayk,

the intensity of the noise doesn't really matter, what does is how "noisy" is the sound and how much control i have on it. If someone near me shouts at someone else to tell him/her something, i just can't prevent myself from interrupting the "disturber" and tell him "please don't shout near my ears" (as for you, this drives me mad, and my friends had to get used to it). I don't mind being disturbed by noises i can't control: cars, neighbours' baby, dogs etc... so to sum up, i just feel hypersensitive to noises i can stop. i hope this "philosophy" may help you, try to think about it.

One of the reasons I was hoping noises like I described did bother others is that I am hoping it isn't more of a bi-polar issue that has not be diagnosed yet. I wonder if I have type 3 bi-polar (cyc?) along with my ADHD. I tend to be hypersensitive to noise but not all the time, just when HYPER. Sometimes I feel tooo complicated for myself! Oh Yes - cant stand loud mens voiceshmmm, i just can't stand females' voices which are too high...

Glad someone has mentioned ADHD and noises as for the last couple of years I have not been able to cope with people snoring or if they are in same room as me the slightest breathing noises drives me mad I can not cope with it. Everytime my brother snored I used to shout tell him to stop it, but he kept saying he couldnt help it his 28 Im 18, everyone in my house would be up till at least 4am every night. My brother works with cars so he needs sleep or he could seriously hurt himself or other people as he works on their cars thats what he has to do with his job. Me keep shouting every night cos I couldn't cope with the noise made my mum ill & on for birthday back in march the police was called as my mum couldn't cope with me going on anymore they couldn't remove me from the house as I had not turned 18 by that point (It was my birthday last week I was 18) We had been up & down the doctors but the could do nothing, I was sent to see ear specilist but he said my hearing was perfectly normal. Too perfect my mum said! As I could hear the sligtest noise even when the television was on. I had become so obsessed with snoring noises that no one could sleep over our house. Just a few months ago some one gave us a bed so mum put it down stairs in our play room I have been sleeping there ever since & now I have no problems with noise as thank god I can not hear my brother snoring
Oh Yes - cant stand loud mens voices
Are you female?

The only think I can deduct from reading your post is that you are female and you were in a abusive relationship with someone.  Or you are male and got bullied around by stronger peers.  I'm probably reading into this but that emoticon with the black eye pretty much made me think of this hehe.

well. i hate to be so sexist

but male and female voices get on my nerves.

i cannot believe all the little quirks we have in common. if i hear a voice that is grating i feel like i  could punch a hole in the wall. i feel that i JUST CAN'T BEAR IT!! i speak to ppl from all over the country all day on the phone, and sorry eastern coast ppl ..the severe bostonian , the brooklyn and longisland ladies, and the new jersey mothers!!! geez! horrible accents, grating and unrelenting in my ear! they piss me off! southerners even when speaking relatively rapidly are sugar to me..i do like some n. eastern accents, some are just very severe though.

snoring:

my husband snores so loud his family has stories about going on camping trips with him and regretting it, every holiday they insist on giving me sympathetic nods and mention that i must be such and angel, or deaf to sleep with him. well, i  am not either. i kick him in bed when he snores. LOL. i don't do it to be mean, its my semi sleepy irritation and he is like a bear hibernating! it pisses me off! i have to shove him, kick him , nudge him, wake him and he just tells me 'i'm going to roll over in just a seco....snore snore snore" GEEZ!

we used to get into a bunch of tiffs about it. once he mentioned "what do you want me to do about it? "

me: " why don't you be proactive? i need to sleep! try the nasal strips, those drops that are supposed to stop it or maybe surgery .."

him" are you serious? surgery? just for some snoring?"

me" uh YES. i think its that serious. i hate it, it infuriates me..and i have to sleep with you for the rest of my life. thats serious"

needless to say he never did it and i'm still kicking and shoving in bed all night.

HATED SOUNDS, NOISES:

the 'tatoo joe' that plays rap really REALLY loud at the end of my street. i like rap but he has crappy rap.

the bass in cars that is SO loud that i can 1)feel the vibration throughout my house, or 2) can hear it over my music which is sort of loud but contained and within my own car with windows closed. WTF.

people chatting. chat chat chat chat around my office. please shut it up. we don't have a watercooler pls don't go around wandering from chat to chat as if our entire office is a big watercooler.

lawnmowers on the wk/end. can't they make a quiet one? isn't this 2004? oh no. has to happen when i try to sleep.

the television. when i'm not watching it. i hate to hear it. i try to turn it down all the time and mute the commercials. i get especially edgy b/c i can hear it loudly when i'm upstairs in my bedroom, the sound carries.

the sound of pro sports on television. it makes me want to permanently remove the tv from my house. who needs that? (yes, since i find it so uninteresting anything about sports barely makes it to the realm of my conciousness)

my son whining. sorry my litte baby. i love him to pieces, but the whining. you could use it to torchure me. put me in a cage and play loops of kids whining i will tell you anything you want as long as i don't have to hear it.

ppl yelling and screaming. yikes!

ahh

yes such a long list. but it is so true. sounds that go against my grain make me irritable and i feel like running away from them.

thanks for letting me ramble!

MORE HATED NOISES:

Dripping fauets, especially when you can't get them to quit at three in the morning!

The high pitched whine of older electronics. I made my B/F go out and buy a different computer because I couldn't stand the noise (which he couldn't hear) ANY LONGER!

I can't stand the TV unless it's something I want to watch either. My B/F plays computer games and watches TV at the same time (I swear he's ADHD sometimes!) and I made him buy headphones and mute the TV. I am sounding like a total b-word aren't I?

Nor can I tolerate the noise of the booming bass of someone elses stereo. First, is SO disrespectful and two, it drives me INSANE! If you want the world to listen to your music, be a DJ or buy some headphones.

There are just some noises that irritate me to the very core!!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one!

My youngest son (23) cannot sleep without his fan for white noise. When he sleeps over at a friend's house, he takes it with him!
