addiction to music

hi there, i'm just wondering...

i've been producing music for years (tekno and metal so far) and i can't imagine a day whithout any music. When i say any, i mean at least ... 10hours per day. I just feel lonely and depressed when alone with no music controlling my mind. Music both allows me to concentrate on something (chatting with people, homework or even sex) and allows my brain to to liberate from the always going "storm" in my mind.

I'm opened to any kind of music, from classical to the hardest tekno being produced, i'd like to know how you understand/feel music.

thx for reading, xavier
I like music as well, but I cant listen to it for long periods at a time it starts to irritate me and I get pissed off at it.  I listen to music 99% of the time when I'm driving and I usually turn it off after 30 minutes or so.  I can only take so much before it feels like it is crawling into my brain and eating up the last bit of sanity I have left.  I can't stand television at all, I'm lucky if I can watch one 30 minute show, I hate commercials and I hate the noise it produces, but I like watching movies when I can pay attention long enough.

i too hate commercials.  i mute them if i even watch television.

i am a TOTAL music addict! i feel like i say "omg i feel exactly the same way you guys do! " so often in this forum that i'm going to gag..

i have a commute, i listen to music the whole way back and forth. i can't stand the radio. it sucks. i make my own compilations. i listen to almost anything as far as 'genres' of music...i like classical, brit pop, techno(kind of vintage style, like orbital etc) , the more alternative bluesy down to the earth country (<there are some rare great ones out there), punk, pop, post punk, garage, classic rock, dream pop ET AL.

i sing all the time to my music. it makes life a lot easier. i have been through tons of walkmens....i used to go to sleep with it playing when i was a kid..and i cannot bear to be without music on airplanes, in the car, basically any moment where i'm either insufferably bored or i have to concentrate.

my boss is requiring us to take some tests as an excercise and they're standardized ..i wished the whole entire time that i was taking the test that we i had my walkman with me! it would of been sooo much better.  it does help me concentrate. i read to it..i cook to it, i drive to it, i like waking and getting ready with music, if i'm going out and i need to get ready i love to have my music...if you've read any of my other posts you already know that getting ready to 'go out' is  a nightmare for me. of frustration and it can make me cry. LOL. geez. so music really helps me calm down etc..focus and get on with a task.

sumi

thx

Hi Xavier, I'm a total music freak! I've always been ever since i was little. I drive with my sterio blasting and anoy some other drivers I'm sure. I listen to classsic rock, some metal, tekno, country and sometimes the "oldies". Anything but opra! That stuff makes me crazy!.

I now work where music is played ALL DAY! I do find i concentrate much better. I know some people who hardly listen to music at all! Now thats WEIRD!

It's funny because I *love* music so much and I just can't go without some sort most of the time. If it's not playing it's usually playing in my head. Especially before I got on meds. I could play the entire Beethoven's 9th in my head when I had nothing else to listen to, I often couldn't get it to shut off! It was like a radio station in my head and I never minded it one bit. Music is great, it brings such fire and life to so many things!!!hey Latina-ADD, i'm so glad you behave like me

i'm always singing themes i have in the head when walking in the street, like if i have some walkman playing it... and people do look at me as a freak. fortunetaly i have a friend of mine who's a great musician so i like to walk with him as he's also constantly singing.Music is always going in my life, i wake up, i listen to music, i walk to work, discman in hand, i get to work, radio, i even sleep with winamp running on my computer.  i can't stand it when there isn't music of somekind, it doesn't matter what kind of music either, i listen everything and anything, Classical, Opera, Rap, Hip-hop, Pop, Rock, Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, Jazz, soul, J-pop, techno, dance, trance, etc. etc. etc.

if music wasn't in my life my perminant address would have been that of the local loony bin, if ya know what i mean

well ever since I was little I remember not a day without music.  If I aint humming something or listening to music I tend to get distracted really easily.  As many have said previously that music is vital to concentrate, I find that out about myself as well.  It also helps me calm down at the same time as well.  It is just great.

Music lovers unite!!

I hear this a lot but am very confused by it. I love music. It is very important to me. But I cannot concentrate on anything mental when music is playing. I actually listen to the music. I pay close attention to it. The music tells a story and I have to listen to it. I do not see how it is possible to really listen to any music of substance while reading a book or writing an essay. Maybe my definition of listening to music is different.

I remember 20+ years ago when I met my wife. She told me that she loved to listen to music and I thought YES! So I would go to her place and put on a record, and she would start talking. She did not like to listen to music. She liked to have music playing in the background while we talked. My music lover friends and I used to get together and put on music and sit quietly and LISTEN. Then we would talk about what we heard.

I think many people turn on the radio or stereo when they need to read, study, or work. Most commercial music (basically 99% of everything on the radio)  produces a very constant decible of sound. There is no dynamic contrast like you will find in classical or jazz. This static volume (and usually very simple repetitive rhythm) creates a steady background noise that basically drowns out all the little distractions that would otherwise pull them off task.

So maybe when some people say they listen to music, they really mean they like background music when they are working on something.

There are 4 adults in my family - myself (53) & my 3 sons (25,25 & 23). We all have ADHD. Music is a big part of our lives. When the boys were younger music was the best way to calm them down. Today if we all listen to the same music together, it really helps with family harmony.
We live in a very small house - thank goodness for bedroom doors - & often all have our own music playing in our separate rooms.
One son frequently has the tv & his music on at the same time. He usually has his attention on one & is using the other as background.
I have sometimes found myself thinking "I should put some music on." when I already have music playing!
I do think we often use it as background to drown out the minor sounds, but we also definitely use it to drown out our brains. Then, we play it LOUD. All of us love to highway drive with our music blaring.

My son who is ADD is "addicted" to music.  He produces "Trance".  SAme thing as you, he will be on the computer from 10am to 2AM in the morning.

The good thing is he has found what his passion is.  He is 17 yrs old and doesn't do real well in school.  But he already has 4 record deals signed.  A producer paid his way to Florida this summer to work in the studio with him for a week.

Get this, He also plays "Pipe Organ" and plays at different churches in our area every Sunday. (He's played since he was 5ish).

(Not a comercial) Check out his stuff-Google search- Marcus Schulz presents Elevation-"Clear Blue".  Clear Blue is one of my son's works.

As my daughter said once we found out he had this great talent..."Remember how we used to yell at him for being on that stupid computer all day?  Who Knew???

Well if music is my only addiction then I'm a happy woman...lol  I've always loved music.  I don't care for TV at all.  Never really have, the commercials drive me nuts.  The commercials on the radio have the same effect on me, so I don't listen to the radio much.  I do have my yahoo launch cast radio station on most of the time.  No commercials and I do hear new music that is specific to which mood I am listening to.  I can tell you this much, I don't listen to many of my CD's anymore.  I actually listen to the lauch cast or I am a member at a paid MP3 download site.  I still have my old CDs but after I started the Adderall I discovered that the music I had been listening to was extremely negative and very sad.  Now I can't stand that kind of music at all.  If it's not positive in the lyrics I won't and can't listen to it.  If I do, I get depressed and my old thought patterns return.  That makes it hard because people have to be careful as to what they say to me in certain regards.  If it's something that I am very sensitive about my mind will literally take it to the worst possible exreme that it can...and that's not easy to get out of.  So music is very important to me not only for my concentration but it helps with my thinking and my moods.  Don't know if anyone else has this same thing and while it's very strange it's a very big key to how my brain is wired.

Music is one of the few things that I can actually concentrate on for hours at a time.  Always a song in my head.  My entire life, there has been a continual muscial backdrop in my head.

I also play guitar and can sit for hours playing.  Drives my kids (and ex-wife) crazy because I tend to completely zone out while playing.  People talk to me, I hear them, but never respond  (I kind of treat them like the other nonsense in my head).

I also dicovered along time ago (probably when I was about 8 or 9) that it was easier to fall asleep if I had the radio on.  It would "drown out" the racing mind.

Music used to be my focus, used to get me through the next day, made me work, it made me hang out, made me think, helped me make decisions.

But once they stoled every CD I owned throughout my whole life, and the sound system I spent a good portion of my life to build.  My whole life fell apart, and then at 28 years old, I found out I have ADHD.

I haven't really listened to music in 2 years, you don't even want to know how I feel everyday.  life sucks without music.  One day I'll have music again,  need to make money first.

I would actually consider myself a recovering music addict.  I guess I have been "clean" for about 4-5 months now!!!  I quit for religious reasons.  I actually started out in college as a music major years ago and for the longest time was dead set on growing up to be a "rock star".  Then I started becoming more spiritual, keeping with some of the new age/self-empowerment circles I found in AZ.  Finally, I began a more orthodox religious path.  The closer I wanted to be to my creator the more interference I found music providing.  It was a roadblock for me.  I tried quitting several times and generally wouldn't last more than a month or two.   This sounds puritanical, but I do believe that music takes us away from the remembrance of our creator, calls us to the lower base desires of this world, and interferes with spiritual growth.  I suppose one could make an argument for the Christian style of Gospel since it at least calls to some kind of remembrance, but I obviously wouldn't.  I also believe that music influences people in deep but subtle ways.  I read a great quote from a philosopher once and I have not been able to find his name since.  He basically stated:  If you give me the music of a nation, I shall give you their laws.  When I reflect upon this I find a great deal of truth in it.  The unwritten laws of popular music: promiscuous sex, drug and alcohol use, no respect for parents(authority), no respect for each other, and this "gangsta/thug" mentality that is sweeping the popular culture(at least with the youth)is down right disturbing.  I think the youth unfortunately are most susceptible to the influence.  I may get a lot of heat for this post, but so be it.  It's just my two cents. Peace. kronicdaydreamr38319.0373032407[QUOTE=JazzAngel]

Kronic, please don't take this the wrong way but have you ever tried listening to music lyrics and all with your soul?  IE...Sting "Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot", or "If I Ever Loose My Faith In You." I've done so much inner healing from my ADD through listening to music.  I have located songs on the internet that are so spiritually based that it's brought tears to my eyes, and helped to heal the hurt that was deep in my heart and soul.  Even Eminem "Loose Yourself" is positive.  For me, it's all about what I need to hear and learn and my creator will provide me with that all I have to do is simply allow it.  Granted there are some "songs" out there that are as you say they are, however, it's up to the individual as to if they allow what the "artist" is saying to get to their soul...or if they even choose to listen to that type of music.  I personally chose to listen to what my heart and soul lead me to listen to.    It's not like any of us with ADD have ever been that concerned or really fit in with the status quo...lol

Hey Jazz,

I'm not offended at having a constructive and polite discourse on this matter, so no offense taken.  I, like you, am a very sensitive person and therefor work to avoid negativity as well.  I'm not saying that there is no positive music out there.  My point(which you must observe is also my religious point of view)is that music is a distraction from spiritual progress and generally inspires an attachment to this fleeting world as opposed to the everlasting one to come.  Also, I believe that one reason music is so appealing is precisely because it IS a distraction; a distraction from what is really going on inside.  You cannot, in my opinion, find the higher levels of spiritual growth without looking within and dealing with the negative energies inside.  I think music(secular particularly)keeps us from the deep subtle awareness of our inner selves.   I also believe that the negative influences that flow from music are far more powerful and wield a much greater influence than the positive stuff out there.  As far as listening with the heart and soul, I think music is a powerful influence precisely because it speaks more directly to these aspects of ourselves than any other medium.  SO yes I would say I have listened with my heart and soul and I don't think that is an issue really.  But again this is also very much a religious perspective of mine so we would just have to disagree.  Peace.

Hey Kronic, we can most definately agree to disagree on this one...I will say it's nice to know that you like me are just as sensitive to the negativity...keep up the great work, and no matter what follow your heart and soul, it won't lead you wrong...

Kronic, much respect for finding your spiritual path, sir.  I've just found the trailhead, myself.

With regard to this opinion of music being reflective of the state of the people who listen to it, I think that's absoloutely true.  In fact, I think it's true of most things people create: we create and consume things with which we identify.

However, I don't think that music, writing, math, visual art, sport, etc. are any less valid because they happen to be associated with what appears to be, at times, an entirely morally-corrupt nation.  In the same way, your choice of spiritual paths may be a reaction to the flaws you see surrounding you, yet it is completely valid for you.

I don't listen to the radio any more.  Mostly, it's the commercials which get to me, but really, I don't find that I connect with much of what's on the radio or television.  At least there's TiVo for the TV, and I can filter out what I'm definitely not interested in (and skip most of the rest).  I like music enough to seek out the artists and communities which interest me.  I've found that the Internet is a great tool for finding new music.  Online music stations are great because they tell you what they're playing, they can play really diverse and unknown stuff, and they don't bore you with commercials for crap nobody really needs.

Don't write off music because they play crap on commercial radio.  Love of music is like any kind of love: you get as much from it as you put into it.

can't agree with kronic more...but how suseptable we are to the subliminal/not so subtle messages.

I do think it is important to be exposed to, recognise and critically evaluate the message, understanding the context in which it is written. We are the sum of our awareness. Awareness lifts us out of our ignorance.  Be courageous enough to decide where your values truely lie.

Danc e to your own tune.

Oh,  our creator gave us music. Some interesting replies on this topic.  It's nice to share some different perspectives.  BTW, I don't mean to imply that I am some kind of spiritually advanced guru or something.  If you all have ever seen a movie called "The Usual Suspects," Kevin Spacey had a great line, "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist."  The devil does exsist and he comes at us through any door we leave open to him.  My personal belief is that music is one of those doors.  The more doors you leave open the more vulnerable you are.  I prefer to close as many as I can--that's all.PeAcE!

Kronic...now we're going to argue...  Here's one for ya...sorry bud but you just got my "goat" with this crap about the devil and music...

I have no pleasure in any man who despises music. It is no invention of ours: it is a gift of God. I place it next to theology. Satan hates music: he knows how it drives the evil spirit out of us.

~Martin Luther~

Bravo jazz angel,
and our deity never taught us to live in fear.
Trust in her.As a musician, and one who definitely uplifts people with his music, I
agree with you (& Martin Luther) completely!

I believe Kronic is sincere in his beliefs, but like many who first embark
on a spiritual path, there is that tendancy to over-react, to swing too
far in the opposite direction, which still puts them off-center, and "on-
point".

God certainly created music, and music is about the highest form of
spiritual expression & healing we have at our disposal. In fact, music is
ALWAYS happening, & everywhere: birds, ocean waves, babbling
brooks, the wind, and the wind's effects on various objects, etc. etc.
etc......

To say that "most music is negative" is a completely "glass half-empty"
myopic view of the world. I find listening to, and making music,
profoundly positive & spiritually renewing & affirming. Of course, there is
also much music created that is negative & not life-affirming, and that is
the music best left alone, just as electricity can light your room & heat
your home, but if you put your fingers in a socket, that same energy &
power can kill you.....

Saxman, that was a very respectful and thoughtful opinion.  There is some truth in what you say as far as God creating music--especially when you get into really abstract stuff like the music of nature, etc.  I believe the same thing about rhythm as well.  If you pay attention you can see the various rhythms in life. Allow me however to further clarify my stance.  In the Quran we are specifically told that David(Dawood--peace be upon him)was given the Psalms and that the mountains and the birds would sing the praises of God with him.  But unfortunately, my friend, we both know that this is not the kind of music that has the most influence and draws the most attention--especially with the youth.  I frankly think a person has to be blind to think that the popular music and the behavior associated with it is not destroying this culture.  No indeed, the glass is not half empty and it is not half full--it's both.  I believe in truth and realism, not comfortable illusions.  I have a cousin who is a jazz drummer.  I don't know, but judging by your handle you may be a jazz musician as well too.  I know jazz musicians are really into music for the sake of the music and I can appreciate that.  But as I see it, it's like alcohol: a little benefit, a lot of harm.  If a person truly believes that God gave us music, then it's best to be content with the music HE gave us(e.g. the sounds of nature, chanting his praises, etc.) as opposed to the alternative.  Just my perspective.  Peace.

THis was my post from 8/19/04.

Well my son's song "Clear Blue" was picked up by Paul Oakenfold and remixed and put on his LP "Creamfields".

Creamfields has just been nominated for a GRAMMY!  (Best Electronic/Dance Album)

Check out the CD, my son's track is #5, "Marcus Schulz presents Elevation-Clear Blue"  Elevation is my son.  This is not ment to be a commercial, it's intention is that ADDers can do great things in this world, just find your nitch!  At age 16 he's found his.

For those that don't know, this music is Trance, you know that stuff that they play at "Rave" parties.  How devilish!

Remember this is a kid that isn't doing well in school.  ADD  Doesn't know what he wants to do when he leaves school.  Lack of Direction????

One more thing. He Plays "Pipe Organ" every Sunday at various churches.  He has played since age 14. He is booked for the next 6 months every Sunday. The LORD is truely working through him with his music!

Just ask the various people that he has touch around the world with his talents.

Goats???? Why are you bringing goats into this???  No animals shall be harmed on this message board, missy!!! What crap about the devil and music???  You think that's crap??? Is Marilyn Manson a choir boy?  I don't know...check out his website.  He's not even the worst, because he is so obvious.

http://www.marilynmanson.com/news.phpWARNING: EXPLICIT MATERIAL

Anyway, I would respectfully disagree with Mr. Luther.  Sorry.  Maybe God gave us music...maybe; but the devil corrupted it--that's for sure.  It's funny, whenever someone brings up the "D" word seriously, people tend to take it in jest.  That's why I quoted that line in my last post:"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist."  Because it couldn't be more true.  But hey,  I'm all about hugs.

My 2 older sons are both into music. When they were little music was the only thing that calmed all three of us down. My youngest son loves music too. Two of them have been diagnosed with adhd and are on medicine, and so am I. My older son, not diagnosed, is a music major in college and a member of a 10 piece ska/funk band. The second son, diagnosed, is also a member of a band. The oldest especially is addicted to music. I guess there are worse things to get addicted to.

I also Love music!  I listen to all kinds depending on my moods! But it can usually calm me down when I am mad or upset and when I am not listening to it for those reasons, its cause I am HAPPY!

SCATS

I am also in a deep love affair with music. I'm a freelance music journalist and it helps me to concentrate so much. I can't get enough of it. There is a tune to suit every mood, to uplift, to dance, to do anything. It's art in a high form and touches so many people everywhere. I respect Kronics beliefs, but can you imagine a party without music? It's the soundtrack to my life and it brings me a lot of joy.

Hi!!!

My first post here. Will get around to introducing myself later!!!

I'm particularly into trance music. The link below is to one of my favourite tracks at the moment. The melody that kicks in around 2 mins or so is just pure euphoria to me!!!
