ADHD and Anxiety | ADHD Information
I totally identify with everything you said roger!!
I had to actually practice on the eye contact thing.. I used to look at forheads and sides of faces when I talked to people. I started forcing myself to look in peoples eyes.. ooohhh the anxiety was TERRIBLE!! But I knew that I had to work on it, and I did. I found that making eye contact and tracking with my eyes did seem to help a bit with my ability to pay attention in conversations. so it is really worth it if you have inattentive symptoms. WARNING if you try this, get ready for an awful feeling of butterflys in the styomach and a bit of nausea also. ( yes, I was that bad!)
Im the same way, everytime I open my mouth, I put my foot in it up to the knee caps!! So I try to listen more than I talk. of course, my impulsiveness gets in the way, and I end up blurting something out inappropriate anyways
So, this long post is saying, " yes you are posting in the right forum!" But, like Ryan has said, there are other reasons for your symptoms besides ADD. There is social anxiety disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Depression, thyroid imbalances, food allergies... etc. etc.. etc...
Best to get evaluated by a professional who really knows what he or she is doing.
Good luck! and welcome also!
Sherry
I haven't been officially diagnosed w/ ADHD yet but I'm going to see a doctor soon and I have all the symptoms etc... I'm wondering if that is the root of some of my anxiety woes though. I'm 29 btw.
Basically my deal is I feel the need to have friends around to sort of keep me going, otherwise I'm sort of a bore. The problem is although I look forward to hanging out w/ my friends or making new friends, once I do end up hanging out I'm not much for conversation compared to others and I just want to go home or leave. Which is rather odd because once I'm home I think about wanting to hang out again w/ my friends. This happens when I visit my parents during the holidays. I'm stoked to see them, but then I get home and just hang out in my room.
I sometimes wonder if my (undiagnosed) ADHD makes me fearful of saying the wrong things in these situations which in turn shuts me up. My eye contact w/ others sucks as well.
Anyways, I wanted to keep this somewhat short, which leads me to the question...anyone else here specifically feel like this or am I totally posting in the wrong forum?

thanks!

Roger, Welcome to the Messageboards!
Things i relate to in your post, 1. lots of people know of me.2 social
anxiety 3. get bored quickly,4. eye contact is a feature for me too. 5.
communication with others who are not adhd is a chore because i do not
get them or they do not get me.
Words of warning... spend more time with a good diagnostic
chart.. be brutally honest, if you see something you are not sure of..
put a tick, ask like you are doing now. Before you go to professional
be reasonably sure... if you are diagnosed in an inappropriate way,
even within the adhd spectrum, it can lead to long and frustrating
trial and error with management methodologys.
You are so spot on for possible diagnosis so far as information you
have provided, but.. it is only part of possible list of indicators
required to consider someone for further investigation..OK! Question;
Can you Hyperfocus!
Hi. Happy New Year and thanks for the positive comments. To answer your question, well, being a computer programmer when crunch time comes I can hyperfocus - I get into a groove and can get my work done. But for me to get to that point takes a while - I'm very unfocused otherwise.
I just wanted to add to my earlier post, that when I'm in 1 on 1, mutual conversation with people, it becomes so difficult for me to maintain the dialog. So difficult to the point where it almost hurts my head to concentrate on the conversation (the only exception I would say is in a job interview... or when on the phone). Any thoughts on that?
thanks!
