Career choice for Inattentive type?

Almost all of the people I know ended up going back and finishing with a degree.  However, I think the most important thing for anyone is that they have a skill to sell while they're figuring it out - and after.  Even if she has a degree - without a skill - life can get bad.

Generally, a business degree or a liberal arts degree on there own aren't that sought after.

For example, if someone had computer troubleshooting skills, she could do temp work that pays pretty well.  If someone is a Spanish speaker, she can have a leg up on almost any job and she'll be regularly in demand.  If someone could help as a special ed assistant, there are plentiful jobs.

Can you guys tell me what career choices/college degrees HAVE worked for you?

My 21 yr old daughter is struggling in her last year of business at the university. She HATES all the business classes, and I can't imagine her trying to do the 9-5 office job. The advisors at her school are useless. She seems open to changing her major, but has no idea what to change to.

I graduated with honors with a speech communication degree. it was a very right brained, creative, "artsy fartsy" degree that kept my interest and also encouraged lots of creativity. If she looked at speech communication, there might be some business classes that would transfer over since they can be related. Especially if she concentrated on interpersonal communication.

People with these degrees are consultants, teachers of assertativeness training for corporate executives, and  public speakers.

People jobs, where she is working with people and there is a lot of variety.   Like career counseling -- if she likes helping people having problems with finding a job or deciding on a career.   I liked this type of work myself.

Thanks guys, all good suggestions I will pass on to her. She has been interested in psychology and has mentioned the communications major. Her current minor is in holistic health but I think she could easliy change her minor to business (probably has all the classes). I wish they had better career guidance at the school, it almost seems like they WANT the kids to flounder about...money grubbing perhaps? I think you're so right about a skill to help her work now.

TheDog and anyone else: if she drops out to work for a while, what do you think the odds are that she will finish eventually? Her history of finishing things isn't too good thus far, so it worries me! Not sure I want to encourage that.

I'd suggest that she figure out what fascinates her and get a degree in that.  I'd also suggest she develop some specific skill set in something that can make a living while she figures it all out.   I don't think there's really any way to figure it out at 21 before she's been out there yet.

For example, she might be fascinated in psychology and could get a degree in that, while also learning a useful skill that's in demand and will get her a job - like Spanish or computer troubleshooting, etc.

that's weird cos i was going to suggest psychology/psychiatry too. i know i am fascinated by the brain and all that. i think a lot of Adders are - but there is the very boring, detail-orientated side i imagine to that field of study.

i LOVE cinematography and couldn't think of a better field to suggest someone to go into but that's just me. and i hate it when i am not working (like now) cos i get tense and irritable and all that and constantly am in arrears in payments etc. etc. because not having a steady income.

this is on a totally different topic but whatever --- i started reading a bit about Scientology the other day and i came to the immediate conclusion, which if true is very ironic that L Ron Hubbard was a definite ADDer!

hahahaha -- but when you look into all his theories (i didn't do much just skimmed) the first thing he talks about is GETTING CLEAR ---- remind anyone else of being in a fog here????? and the second thing he talks about is the REACTIVE MIND - how many of us have posted about our mind self-sabotaging and stopping us and blocking us with procrastination. he was a classic ADDer

plus his interest in psychology and spirituality - definite ADDer traits too. plus creative, writer a bit nuts et al. so it made me laugh to think that scientology, the very people who walk around saying ADD doesn't exist, was founded by a classic ADDER. and all scientology is - is a way to try to combat ADD. their whole religion is a theory to try to combat a disease they don't believe exists. oh ho-di-ho life can make you laugh from time to time!

perhaps we could send copies of the crawling exercises to help them reach Operating Thetan mode a little faster.....?????chjones38719.2511458333

I find it to be more beneficial when ad/hders find jobs, or go to school majoring in a subjects that they enjoy anyway. Say for instance with me personally, I have always loved and have been very good at art.  Any art-related assignment holds my attention (sometimes, too much).  If I were to go to school in a business career, I could just see my mind wandering all over the classroom.  I can just imagine what that would be like in a job setting.

Does your daughter like animals? Try a career or schooling in veterinarian, or something similar, maybe grooming, or something like that.

Art?  Try computer drafting, or graphic design and advertising.

Like to be outside with flowers?  There is always landscaping.

Designing things?  There is always interior design, or fashion design.

If you have ad/hd severely, and have difficulty concentrating, it is best to position your career around what it is you like, enjoy, and are able to keep focus on, whenever possible, IMHO.

She could try the military. There is nothing mundane about it. It's full of changes and doing different types of jobs wherever you go and you always have full medical, dental, mental, 30 days vacation a year, etc. She can travel the world and see different places. There is no such thing as 9-5 and you always run into all kinds of different people. If she has any kind of schooling she'll have an advantage over people and could be an officer.

The negetives-- sometimes long hours, might have to go to Iraq, might not like some of the people, might not leaving family for long periods of time. But it's very honorable and fullfilling. Got to take the good with the bad!
