That's perfectly normal! Even after being on my ADHD meds a year I still have that "rush" a half hour/hour after taking them.  It's short-lived and gets less noticable as the time goes by.  It's absolutely nothing you should fear unless it becomes more than a nuisance.

You could try the extended release (XR) version - or a type of methylphenidate that is less prone to the highs and lows.  Do check with your doctor if it becomes more than a small trouble for you.

The lows you feel - same thing.  Many get that (I personally don't) - it's considered a standard side-effect by most.  The XR if timed right (and sometimes combined with SR to combat it) usually removes the highs and lows.

Definitely log how you feel over your days and let your caregiver know.  They should be able to adjust dosage and type to make it much easier to deal with.

Good luck!

My 20mg dose of ritalin improves my symptoms of ADD 100 fold, but it also has some undeniable side-effects.  For example, I become extremely talkative, outgoing, and generally feel good, especially during a spike that comes about an hour after I take them.  And then, after the dose wears off, sometimes I get irritable, and feel really depressed, although that could have something to do with my accompanying depression.  Is this normal?  Are these effects dangerous, should I be concerned or just appreciate the good feeling?
