Not to nit-pick, but I think this is important. I think you mean you'll never 'disclose', not 'confess'. You confess something you did wrong and having ADD isn't wrong. You're choosing not to disclose personal information to your dad - nothing wrong with that.
Again, don't mean to nitpick, but there's enough negative connotations with ADD and I think the terms we use in describing it can go a long way to reinforcing those negative connotations.
I really don't think a lot of older people understand going to seek a psych for their problems was a postitve thing for people. It's just for the mentally insane like taritac said. People will even look at you funny when you tell them your on meds and seeking help for something like you fell out of a well and hit a pully. I even had a guy telling me that he just prays to Jesus and he helps him for his problems. But the power of postive thinking or just snapping out of it is just a bunch of bull. People have real problems and disorders and need help.
Yeah, I don't think you are going to get much support from your dad. It's just a different mindset of older people. Back in "their day", psychiatry really was for people who were INSANE. Nowadays, psychiatry also includes help for people who are not able to function well in the world, even if they aren't crazy. Being treated for mental/emotion challenges is seen as a weakness to them.well glad he's not my doctor - that's for sure!if you guys read my posts you know my fam has no clue anout treatment for add & meds.
its my secret.
i was talking to my dad the other day he was discussing his bad sleep patterns i said see a doctor maybe you can figure out whats bugging you his reply "f that thats for nuts" i dont get it... he is vvery respected in med community & has made a sizable sum of money in his life in addition to to that he is paid to lecture on medications & provide testimony on medications.
then goes into a rant about his sister in law on anti depress, finishing w/ " if your f-up just snap oout of it."
well guess ill never confess oh well
thats the kicker i dont think he has stuggled through life never been late for a bill has made enough $ for 3 lifetimes The good news is....You don't have to tell! It can be our little secret.
