Adderall Side Effects | ADHD Information

My 6 1/2 year old daughter was changed from Strattera to Addrell yesterday.  She has taken 3 doses so far.  She takes 5mg morning and at noon.  The Strattera did nothing for her, she was actually worse in her symptoms.  Today she is pretty quiet and complaining of a stomach ache and has vomitted once.  Is this just something that her body just has to adjust to the stomach adjusting?  What other k inds of side effects does this med have?  She is on the regular Addrell and if it works for her then at her next appt she will start the Addrell XR the longer release one thatshe takes once daily.  One of my concerns with taking this 2 times a day is she is starting 1st grade next week and how reliable is the school with giving meds on a daily basis?

Karlysmom,

My stepson has been on the once a day adderall for several years now. He started with the 5mg dose and has graduated to the 25 mg dose. We have not had any side effects at all.

I have been reading some the your posts on the side effects of Adderral. My son who will be 7 in a couple of weeks was just started on Adderral XR 15mg 3 days ago. We have noticed some calming effects but we also have noticed he seems to be experiencing more anger and  after  approx 10 hrs after the medication was giving he becomes almost out of control with crying, yelling and there seem to be nothing to calm him other than just let him go thru it. Have any of you experienced this at the beginning and if yes how long did it last?

Your own experience would be most appreciated.

One of my concerns with taking this 2 times a day is she is starting 1st grade next week and how reliable is the school with giving meds on a daily basis?

KarleysMom.....where I live, the parent has to get a note from the doctor giving the school authorization to give the child medication. Once that is done, the nurse and the school are legally responsible for ensuring that the child gets the medication every day at the time specified. Hope this helps

Karley's mom-

Hopefully, you will be on the XR by the time school starts.  I've found that even at a private school, getting the meds on a regular basis can not be assumed.  My daughter didn't start the meds until she was 9, so I can't really comment on the side effects you are seeing.  I do know my daughter's appetite suffers, but she's holding her own on her weight.  I worry about proper nutrition, but sometimes it's a battle to get her to eat just SOMETHING.  I don't think it's a nausea thing, think she just doesn't get hungry.

Rita,

Absolutely, I think almost everyone who has experienced Adderall has seen that rebound reaction when the adderall wears off each day.  In my daughter's case, the anger and temper "rebound" lasts only about an hour or two, then she calms back down.  The doctor did give us a smaller dose to give in the mid-afternoon so that these rebound reactions didn't occur in her after-school care time.  But I still have to deal with it when she comes home.  All things considered, I'll take the temper as a trade-off, her in-school performance has literally skyrocketed on the medication.

Thanks for the replies.  Karley is doing much beter today.  She got "sick" 4 times yesterday after the noon dose.  But today we have noticed a difference!!  She starts school next Tuesday so we will have to do meds in school for a month before switching to the Addrell XL.

Thanks for your words of encouragement JayneLizzie

I hope this makes sense to you. If not feel free to write back.Strattera (atomoxetine HCl)  is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and Adderall is a (CNS Stimulant) Central Nervous System Stimulant. Strattera makes your body norepinephrine. There are some of the same and some diffrent side effects in these meds. When she goes to Adderall XR the usual dosage is (PO QAM) or one in the morning.Luvmykids02-

My son is curently taking Adderall twicw a day and he is also in the first grade this year. He does take his second dose of meds at school after his lunch time. He gets into a routine and just goes to the nurses office after lunch to take his meds. I know that if he does not show up in the nurses office - she comes looking for him. I have had great success with our school nurse with my son getting his medication at school. It has been a good experience for me.

Just wanted to give you a good heads up about schools on a positive note!!

Just wanted to give you a good heads up about schools on a positive note!!

Hi Christie......delighted to hear that as everyone being on the same page and working together is the formula for bringing out the very best in our children and acheiving the best results possible. Thanks for sharing :))))

your kids freak out when they come off a dose becuase they are literally comming down from an amphetamine high. younger kids especially don't know what's going on. they just eat pills you feed them and feel one way soon after then 10 hours later "come down" and feel sh*tty/angry whatever. espeically if they don't specifically realize WHY it's happening to them and what they're taking (which i'm sure most really don't).

as far as the comedown/loss of appetite/insomnia personlly I'd reccomend marijuana.  i just got my meds today so I can't really give any feedback on how effective it is combating  some nasttyyy side affects (and even if I could results vary person to person too much for it to even matter), but in theory it should be fine.

even if getting high (or not even high. just a hit or two off some good dro is enough to balance things out. especially if you aren't a regular user) doesn't work for sleep. Wait two hours or so for the comedown and you'll just get tired anyway... so time it right. hahaha.

I've heard weed+adderall kills the "munchies" therefore negating the food use, but I doubt this is 100% true for everyone.  It's def. worth a shot.

and as far as the comedown goes a hit or two off a pipe does wonders (at least personally). Anytime I wake up any hungover to any degree after drinking a little weed makes everything 200% better. My body feels good, my brain feels good, my outlook goes from down and "blahhhhh" to up and go get em. This actually goes for anytime I wake up and don't feel good/happy period. I see absolutely no reason why it couldn't work miracles for late night bad feelings after adderall/ritalin/whatever comedowns.

I know a lot of people on this board are most likely parents of kids with ADD/ADHD or adults of a more advanced age than my present 19.  Maybe i'm wrong who knows, but I pretty much look at all drugs along the same lines whether they be illegal prescribed or otherwise. Honestly do you trust something "god" (if you belive) put on the earth or something men made in a labratory? Granted maybe marijuana isn't for everyone, it doesn't have to be. All I say is someone else's opinion and a title such as SCHEDULED doesn't really matter that much to me.  I know myself better than anyone. I know what I want/think/feel/need and if I think I can get it somewhere I'll get it regardless.

Besides I'm sure in 100 years half the legal drugs today will be illegal and we''ll just have new drugs to take their place. Up until this last century (or the late 1800s) cannibus/cocaine/opium/mdma(excstacy) etc etc were all legal available OTC or by prescription.  Christian womens clubs used to crusade daily against alcohol during prohibition and then go chill afterwards and drink their nice little "tinctures" and feel nice and relaxed after a long day of doing god's work. What they were drinking was opium tea (still easily made today if you find/order dried poppy pods. legal to purchase illegal to make. but whose gonna know?) It was okay though because it was sold legally so it didn't matter. Legal=okay.

I understand no one is gonna hand a 7 year old some pot and go "hit this sh*t. it'll make you feel better". Then again if you can give them amphetamines why not cannibus? A lot of me feels real negative about giving young kids drugs this serious before they are able to become informed and make up their own opinions. I don't mind taking it because i know what it is. how and why it works and what it could potentially do to me. If a person doesn't have the mental capacity/age etc to be able to look at all these ADHD drugs as potentially addicting stimulants with side effects/withdrawals/comedowns and access the risk and decide for themselves if they want to take it then I don't think they should. Most don't look at things like this though and that's why you have ridiculous amounts of unsuspecting adults hooked on painpills/xanax/valium/adderall etc wondering "how did this happen?!?!?!"

i'm not really advocating everyone jump on the drug bandwagon. I'm just trying to pre-empt any of the typical "DRUGS ARE BADDDD CUZ THEY ARE ILLEGAL AND D.A.R.E TOLD ME SO. URRR SUPPORTING TERRORIST. I HATE TERRORIST. DUR DUR DUR" outlash. (and "supporting terrorist" comes from opiate/heroin use i'd assume since one of afghanistan [and many others] main cash crop is the opium poppy)

my only advication is to keep an open mind and consider... in every aspect of life.

:-) good day
