do you sit on your legs? | ADHD Information

Share

Hey, I thought I voted but it doesn't show. I must of posted and forgot to vote. sheesh.

Edited to add: Chjones, I know what ya mean.  Sometimes I'm on a 3:00 A.M. and there is nobody online.  Not even guests!  Very lonely.

Auntie38721.5222685185I guess I shouldn't vote, I have AD/HD?

I always sit on one of my legs. Well I try not to when I'm siting by the table to eat with some one else but always at any other time. Also I wrap them around the chair or cross them only to change and cross them the other way and so on.

These claims sound very Bogus to me . . .ADD is
caused by a Brain Chemical Malfunction . . .I guess I
would have to read this info., how many ppl were in
the research, how long did they do it, what was the
age of the subjects, did they already have a theory
and then try to prove it and how did they arive at this
conclusion . . .

So many Questions . . .

pilgrim, I thought that it might be bogus too, I originally took the book off the shelf of the book store because the title made me mad!  I couldn't believe that some people were claiming that they could stop ADHD or ADD (The name of the book is Stopping ADHD.)  When I began to read it, it fit me perfectly.  I was dx by a psychiatrist and was on Adderal, herbs, then Concerta.  (Concerta did not work for me by the way.  I really like Adderal - to each his own I guess!)

It was written by two women who studied learning disabilities at Purdue University under the professor, Miriam Bender.  It was Miriam Bender's research initially.  She has passed on and the two authors are keeping her ideas and research alive.  They run a clinic in Indiana.  They teach at the University of Indiana, I think it is that.

As far as a scientific experiment - they have one in the book.  They did it in a school.  They had teachers look for kids who were uncomfortable in their chairs, who stretched their arms and legs out, who sat on their legs.  And then they asked for parent permission for their students to be part of this experiment.  Of the ones that responded, they had half - about 80 if I remember right - do the exercises and the other half didn't do them.  After 6 months, the teachers were asking that the control group get the exercises too.  They also had the kids take tests before and after.  The crawling group - the ones that did the exercises - improved in every test.  The control group only improved in one test.   But the teacher reaction is the one that got to me.  I'm a teacher too.

Anyway, I tried the exercises and they certainly work for me - so here is my conclusion - you will have to reach your own.

The exercises can cure your ADD or ADHD if it is caused by this reflex.  There is a test in the book to see if it bothers you.

Sorry to go on and on.  I hope that answers some of your questions.

Dx'd ADHD, got second opinion, still ADHD and I sit on my butt. I just thought I'd add, I also sit with one leg bent up against my chest so that my foot is actually on the chair.  Gosh, it is hard to describe...do you get what I mean?  I sit at the computer that way a lot at home. Of course not at work.

Some kids sit that way in my class all the time.  The ones that have ADHD or I seriously suspect them of having it.

Anni,

I thought of another thing I do and I wonder if you noticed this from your ADHD kids (probably the girls more than boys).  I cross my leg (like a girl does) but then wrap it even further by tucking it behind the ankle of my leg- the leg on the floor. You would only see this with skinnier kids as you can't do this if your chubby very easily but that is my way of "ankering" myself down.

I know I absolutely get horribly hyper if I can't anker myself down or hunch over or get really comfortable. Like at work I can't sit the way I want so under my desk at least one leg is bouncing constantly and I mean fast bouncing. If someone saw they'd think I am the most stressed out nervous person in the world.

Annie - thanks for the info, now I have a better Idea of
what yer talkn' about . . .

Auntie,

I used to wrap my leg around my other leg that way, I remember doing it that way, anyway.  (Ibelieve you when you say that if you have to be skinny to do it, cause I just tried it and it could barely do it!!!  Oh! here comes the New Years Resolution Diet!!)   I will have to watch for kids in my class to do that specific thing.

I was thinking about all you have said, Auntie, and wondered why don't you just try the exercises.  Even if you don't have signs of ADD, you have signs of the STNR.  Maybe they would help you to be more comfortable just sitting in a chair.  Couldn't hurt anyway.

It would be interesting to know if they help you.

You got a good point anni.  What can it hurt.  Guess I'll go get the book.  O.K.  For the record, you guys know that my biggest problem is getting side-tracked, forgetting things immediately told to me (at home/not at work), procrastinating, and unable to sit like everyone else without getting so antsy I have to get up or bounce my legs.

Is it supposed to help things like not being able to stand certain noises (I've said before that I've gone through different computers, T.V.'s, air cleaners because certain hums drive me bonkers).  Or extreme sense of smell or is that a whole other ball game?

And I can pass the book on to my sister for her daughter and FOR HER TOO.  My sister is very ADHD.

Thanks Anni.  I'll let you know how it goes. (Ask me about it in a year when I remember to get the book)

Auntie,

You sound just like me.  And your doctor says you don't have ADD?  I used to forget things just told to me, get sidetracked, procrastinate, I used to get antsy sitting for a long time if I was painting or doing homework correcting.  All of these have improved for me since I started crawling.  I have really like the memory improvement.  I remember to tell people in my family that someone called for them because I remember!!  Before, I would just forget, even if I wrote it down I would never remember to tell them.  I remember events that are happening in the evening when before I would not even think about them.

As far as smell goes, the authors of the book told someone else on this board when they called them to ask about sensory issues that it isn't proven to help that.  But my experience is that it helps.  I posted on the board somewhere here, probably in the crawlers unite thread, that my sense of smell has been effected.  I don't actually understand it, but since I have been crawling, I can wear a perfume that I couldn't stand before and that would give me headaches.  I wear it all the time now.  (my mom gave it to me as a gift - she actually gave me two bottles and I never wore it because it bothered me soooo much)  I tried it again when I ran out of my other perfume one day.  I was so surprised that I could actually wear it.  I've been wearing it ever since.  Weird huh?    Gas and paint smells really bother me, I haven't noticed if that has improved yet.

You know, the book is so funny.  The women who wrote it write things in it like, go back and read such and such a chapter.  They tell you to read the whole thing and not just parts.  They know ADD people really well.  I jumped to the chapters I wanted to read and they directed me, in the book, to go back and read the appropriate chapters!

It would be great if it helped you auntie,

Hey, is your handwriting good or bad?

Oh yeah, I remember reading about the perfume. See, I told you I immediately forget.

Anni, when I first came to this board I only knew I struggled through school and had no real idea about ADD'ers problems.  And I had custody of my Grand niece who had ADD and still, I had no clue!!  I only knew she stuggled learning and was so wrapped up in just the day to day I never researched anything for my GNieces benefit.  So when I came here I thought, my gosh...these people sound like me and for sure my sister.  I have never went to a doctor.  I just took the online test and it said no. So I assumed I didn't have it & just happened to have some of the ADD'er traits.

I seem so much like most of the ADD'ers but some things not at all.  Like I keep a very tidy house.  Like I kept a job for 23 yrs and excelled in every job I did.

I get things done eventually.  I mean if I go to clean the bathroom and end up vacuming instead it works out because the next day I'll go to take out the garbage and end up cleaning the bathroom. ROTFLOL - this is funny. So it all gets done and I think it is because I am obssessed with a clean house and even though I get side-tracked into some other cleaning project  it just all works out.

Sorry, it is making me laugh cause when I put it into words it just seems goofy.

Auntie, that's not goofy at all. Not all people with ADHD are messy. Some of us develop varying degrees of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (Martha Stewart Syndrome) to compensate for our ADHD.

Not all people with ADHD have difficulty with all types of employment. You obviously found jobs suited to you.

I wouldn't put too much faith in an online test. They're fun, but they're not the whole enchilada.

 I have MSS???

IMac,

I know the online test is far from accurate. And I didn't mean every ADD'er can't hold a job or doesn't keep a clean house but I do know some have troubles in that area. I know there are some brilliant ADD'er out there that put my accomplishments to shame. Not that mine are any thing special to began with but...you know what I mean.

Regardless, it can't hurt to read the book and see what happens. I've been getting along in life just fine I guess but on the other hand it would be kind of nice to know.

Thanks IMac

Sorry to be such a newbie but what is STNR?

Never heard of it here.

/Kaks

Kaks,

The STNR is a reflex that all people have when they are babies.  There are a lot of reflexes that we all have as babies.  They develop at different times and for different reasons.  The STNR is the Symmetric Tonic Neck Reflex.  It urges us to move forward when our arms and legs are bent at the same time.  After crawling for 6 months and in the proper way, the reflex goes away.

A book called Stopping ADHD claims that 75% of all ADD and ADHD cases symptoms can be relieved by crawling exercises.  They claim that these exercises will mature the reflex and relieve the symptoms.

The reason I have gotten to obsessed with this book is that I never crawled as a baby, or only did a tiny bit before I began to walk.  I have casts on my legs and so I didn't crawl.  When I got the casts off, I began walking.

You can find more out about primitive reflexes by searching for them on line.  Just type in primitve reflexes.

I was dx with ADD when I was 40 and I have tried these exercises and I have been very impressed with the book and its claims.

If you want to read more, you can read the "crawler unite" post in the alternatives thread.

Hope that helps a little.

Thx, now I understand.

I dodn't craw either, only for a day or two then I stood up and walk perfectly and that at the age of 9mounth. I've been very early with every development-step (is that a word or did I just make it up ? :-) )

Maby I should read the book too.

/Kaks
I tend to sit on my legs or wrap them around the chair. I have ordered
the book and will soon be joining the crawling.

Kaks,

It fit me exactly when I read it.  I have tried the exercises in it and they do just what they claim in my view.

Good luck to you, my friend.

LTC1,

I will be excited to see how it works for you.  Post your results in the "crawlers unite" thread on the alternative board.

3 people here do.  1 isn't adhd either.

I read a book that claims that ADD and ADHD symptoms can be caused by a reflex in our bodies that we can't feel, but that urges us to spring forward when our arms and legs are bent at the same time.

To stop this urge, the book claims, we sit on our legs, wrap our legs around chairs, etc.

Please post here, if you sit on your legs all the time and are NOT ADD or ADHD.  That would also be good to know.

There are some of us here that are trying to find out all we can about this relatively new research.

Thanks for answering the poll and for posting.

I'll be the first to vote.  I do not have ADHD but thought I might but online tests said No.  I am sitting on one of my legs (at the moment) and the other is tucked under the chair as I type this.  On my chair by my laptop I wrap my legs around the rungs or just hunch over with resulting back aches.

And now I'm going to bed. I have to get up in 3 hrs. Yikes.  Typical me.

i like it when you are on late auntie -- it gives me someone to talk to... otherwise i am posting to myself. not that that is particularly unusual as i mutter away to myself 90% of the time in real life too!!!! hmmmm!

i am currently lying on the floor typing - but have ADD so won't bother to vote.

must get book. must get book. must get book.
