Anyone know much about Metadate CD? | ADHD Information

Share

I am an adult taking it at 20mg 2x daily.  I have nothing but positive results.  That doesnt mean that your ds will have the same experience though. We are all different.  I did have some side effects in the beginning, it took about 2 weeks to subside.

They were a slight appetite suppression, a "crash" at the end of the day, where I felt tired, and sometimes a bit irritable, I also, had to have a routine to help myself fall asleep -- I couldnt just drop my head on the pillow and pass out like I have in the past. ( yes, I mean that, I was a day person, and at night sometimes I wouldnt even remeber my  head hitting the pillow, I was already asleep!)

She is at quite a smaller dose than me of course, and she may not experience any of these symptoms, or might have some that I didnt have, like I said we are all different... Above all, if anything concerns you always call that Dr.

My ds of 8 yrs has been prescribed Metadate CD 10mg.  I'm not familier with it. i have read the drug info but would like to know if anyone has had a good or bad experience with it. my son is taking medadate cd. has been for about a year.l this is after some bad experiences with other meds. seems to be doing real well on this one.did you start your child on it yet?My 9-yr-old daughter took Metadate CD from the time she was finishing kindergarten until Christmas in 3rd grade.  Her body began to metabolize it faster and just didn't respond to it effectively anymore. I loved it while it was effective though. We saw decreased appetite, but not much else. She did have some spells of phobias of dogs and storms and bugs, but I'm not sure that it's the medicine alone causing those.  We recently switched to Concerta- trying different doses for over 6 weeks, but never saw any improvement. I told dr that what I was seeing reminded me of why I took her for testing and put her on medicine in the first place. She has been on Focalin for less than a week now. Things are going better.  Any comments about Focalin?CindyW-

Welcome! I am so glad you found this board.  There are a lot of great people here with knowledge and experience.  With behaviors that you described, I would be quite concerned too.  It causes me to question the diagnosis and the medication prescribed.  What type of doctor diagnosed your son?  Some on this board recommend a board certified child psychiatrist.  My son (ADHD) sees a pediatrician that specializes in mood disorders.  There are other conditions which when treated with stimulants can cause extreme reactions.  What you described is not a typical reaction of a child with ADHD on stimulant medication.  It seems many folks on this board had their children initially diagnosed   with ADHD, then it turned out to be something else.  It's great that you will be seeking a specialist.

Good luck!
My 8 yr old son has been on metadate for a little over a year now and he is having all kinds of side effects. Lately he has been angry all the time. He has also had chest pain and rapid heartbeat. He has trouble sleeping and his skin itches all the time. His pupils look like they are going to explode, they are so large. He worries excessively about everything (someone at school told him that Hurricane Katrina was coming back and going to do to our state what it did to  LA) he totally freaked out about it and asked me everyday for a week if he was going to die like the people in LA did. He won't eat his lunch at school  if the kids sitting at his table are talking because he thinks that they are spitting in his food. He thinks everyone is either mad at him or talking about him. He is highly aggressive towards his younger brother and cries if anything goes wrong (i.e. he was pouring oj this morning and spilled some of it and totally broke down)  We are going crazy because his teacher gets mad and writes ugly notes if he doesn't take his meds. but we are scared of the way our little boy is acting now. His dr. only lowered his dosage (20mg down to 10mg) when I talked to him about this. I think I am going to ask for a referral to a specialist.

Wow, Cindy, I don't usually reply to post that involve kids...cause I don't have any.  I'm an adult adhder that takes ritalin la.  I just feel sorry for your kid!  The doc won't give your kid a different med???  Have you already been through the "try this med" experiment?  If your doc will not let you try a new med...try a new doc.  Your boy needs to enjoy his childhood.....

And please don't think I'm preaching...your post painted a picture of a little boy who is having a hard time.

My 13 yr old son takes   Ritalin LA we still have a rough time some days.  But he was diagn more then 6 years ago .we went thur alot of drugs before we found the right one just keep tryin . if it isn't working tell the dr to change it .i remember concertta WOW! my son cryed all the time . right now he takes 40mg of ritalin la 25 mg of straterra and 50 mg of seroquel to help him sleep at night . He's also bipolar. please just keep talking till someone listens. And if you need to make sure to pick up some pamplets on ADHD and take them to the teachers . tell them if they have a better way to deal with the problem after reading them to let you know. thats what i did .           ;    good  luck
