hello all. found this board only today but I am surprised there is no attenace thread. It was very recently approved for ADHD in children and adults. Now sold as Provigil generic name is modafinil..for sleepyness in sleap apnea, shift work disorder, and one other can't remember right now. I have been taking it for two years and it is great!! no holidays required, only a schedule 4 so docs can call it in...no stigma...but VERY powerful. The Atenace will be available in longer acting varied doses. But I suggest you all start reading about modafinil on the internet. I promise you, it will have a major impact on the med treatment area.. john ...
Gretchen, if it works for you, you go with it. And as far as rages, you can't control that, even if you were the best parent in the world, which you are. You realized it was meds and shifted away from them.to katera
my son's appetite on zyprexa was a huge prolblem and he became overweight and it didn't work that well. he was so aggressive and had rages with concerta that he got kicked out of regular school this year. luckily there was this drug to try and he is do pleasant. he kinda melts down around bedtime and gets very irritable but goes to bed easily. it's funny because when he get tired and starts fussing I don't immediately recognize he's tired, I immediately start thinking he's being defiant. I need to start recognizing that earlier.

Now if I'm wrong in my instincts I apologize - but this looks awfully suspiciously like a veiled ad for this stuff. Am I wrong??
We've been hit by at least 3 spam threads I know of - maybe more. And one porn one *sigh*. So understand I'm jaded.
If this is legit sorry but I get this tingle (spidey sense?) that this is a well-thought ad that avoids the easy tell by no web link.
Hmmm... any thoughts my learned colleagues?
i actually watched a training type show on cable for drs. on treating ADHD , and they mentioned this drug - it seems that iit s testing very well and is lining up to be the "next big thing" - but i would have to agree - we need to wait and see - sounds interesting though.......i have been reading here for awhile, not posting that often, but i actually thought the same thing........... but i have been reading allot about modafinil and was curious if it was useful - i guess i just hope that it is legit! Is this a homeopathic "drug"???I found a lot of info on it - all from the manufacturer so far. Seems it is being considered by the bush*te millitary to replace other meds to keep pilots up shake-free for over 30 hour stretches. Supposedly it could be a dexedrine substitute but they are getting arguments to keep testing it. Jury is out.
It only seems good for narcolepsy and sleep problems on the ads so far. I wouldn't touch if for ADHD for at least 5 years to see if it's safe. We all see what Stratterra can do to a person and the other ADHD meds have mostly been around for decades and we know they are safe (shut up before you start trolls).
So I'm going to watch, wait and who knows - maybe try in around 2011. Maybe.
Insurance companies are getting better about paying for it. Mine paid and I didn't even have to fight.well well well...after my post I thought it sounded like a plant, also. But the thing is that everyone, pretty much everyone, loves this med. Most are in fact enthusiastic about it. I am a Respiratory Therapist, work home health, mostly CPAP visits for sleep apnea. That is how I first heard about it. I started suggesting it right away to my patients. Couldn't tell em I took it, of course. I actually take it as an adjunct to Paxil. Right away, BRIGHT DAY. It is very expensive, insurance is always an issue with it. But you can order it internet from foreign pharmacies (Monarch, Day and Night) for a fraction of the cost. As they say on TV, I wouldn't be without it! johnit is so encouraging to hear real true success stories about medications - lets everyone know that there are alternatives..........
gretchen - was your son very hyper? just curious as this is my daughters biggest struggle - the meds help, but the appetite thing is driving me nuts!!! She is on Ritalin LA which works ok, but only lasts around 5 hours and then the big appetite problem - we tried Concerta and that was awful! She was so aggressive and mean!!
thanks!
I don't know about the original poster, but my report on this drug is very real. Our pdoc has been using it off-label for a while and is very pleased with the results he is seeing. The studies are bringing in good reports too. As far as how it might affect a child dx'd ADHD that is really bipolar, I don't know. I also don't know about how it affects hyperactivity. I too would proceed cautiously given what we know about AD and stimulant use in these kids. However, doctors are using the other stimulants so why not this one which I know from first hand experience does not have some of the same affects as the other stimulants such as loss of appetite, tension, etc.A pdoc who evaluated my son A YEAR AGO wrote in his report that we should consider Provigil if he continued to have problems with traditional stimulants. It is being used for ADHD.
I'm kinda mad after writing a suggestion to the original post of being involved in spam. I was only offering a story of my experiences with the traditional drugs over a period of 3 years and having to live with rages that I initially contributed to my parenting and beginning to believe my son was seriously mentally ill. Since taking my 8 year old off Concerta, and trying Provigil, he has become the son I thought I had raised and a delight to be around.
I just came in and was scanning the threads to see if this had been posted yet. I have been on Provigil for about a year now and I love it. I take it for both focus and excessive daytime sleepiness. Without this drug, I would no longer be able to work. My pdoc and I were discussing this at my appointment yesterday. He said that there will be dosing changes for ADHD. I currently take 300 to 400 mgs a day depending on my sleepiness. He said that there will be 350 & 450 mgs doses or something like that.
What do I like about this drug? It takes 1 to 2 hours to reach maximum effectiveness. I have no trouble going to sleep at night and can even lay down and take a nap if I want. When I wake up, I return to my wakeful state. It doesn't give you the feeling of "speeding" and has never given me the tension that regular stimulants do. It also does not affect my appetite. Overall it has a good clean feel. You really don't even realize you have taken it and that it is helping you until you really stop and think about it or you don't take it for a day, which for me means I will sleep all day. Our pdoc is also using it to treat my oldest daughter's ADHD and she is also bipolar. He added the provigil AFTER he stabilized her moods. I haven't seen any negative affects on the mood disorder.
This is a great progress for the treatment of ADHD in that it gives us another good choice without being a traditional stimulant.
My son has been on Provigil for several months and it doing really well. He was violent on Concerta and it was definately not for him. We switched him to Provigil and he takes that in the morning and we have used Geodon at night for a mood stabilizer. After the school got "rid" of my son and moved him to the alternative school, I went took him off Concerta and tried the new treatment. He has stopped the rages completely. He has worked himself back into regular school and is doing awesome, he can literally sit like the other children and complete his work. The Geodon is working much better than the other drug that caused him to gain weight and he has almost lost all of the weight he has gained. However, the side effects still scare me and I haven't heard of anyone else who takes it. I am definately please with Provigil and this is the first time I've seen improvement in his behavior since we started trying medications when he was 5, he is 8 now.
I am only speaking of the side effects of Geodon, not Provigil. My son kinda melts down before bedtime and he is a little difficult because he is tired, but Provigil is definately working for him
any input as far as how it effects the hyper part of ADHD? my daughter is severely hyper - can not function normally without Ritalin LA - but am having increasing problems as far as how long it stays with her (5 hours) and her lack of appetite.
Thanks!!
how is the appetite suppression?
the info coming out sounds pretty promising.....
