So sad people are uneducated on Neurological disabilities. I guess they don't believe they exist. Those believe it is all over diagnosed and are uneducated on it. This needs to change. We need to educate the public on all types of disabilities. Anyone with any disability should get SSI if you ask me cause it costs so much to day to afford medical bills and meds and cost of living. Gas also. Govt. doesn't get it or care that we can only penny pich so much. They would probebly say get another job.
I searched through the listings on 2 different search engines and the only thing I could even find on Dr Phil concerning his credentials was that he had 30 yrs of experience counseling and had written several books. I got that information from his tv web site. Why wouldn't there be a place for his education and training to be listed? That would impress me more than that he had written books. From what I read, I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he does have a degree in psychology, although I couldn't find even that confirmed anywhere. There was no indication whatsoever that he is qualified to medically diagnose anyone or to give advice about meds. Isn't that practicing medicine without a license and isn't that illegal?
http://www.mediabistro.com/articles/cache/a1938.asp An article called Battling Dr Phil. When they decided to do a great article on Dr. Phil, they were met with such hostility that it was nearly impossible. They did churn out one that was neither for or against, but the author clearly has a very low opinion of him now.
EXCERPTS: "I knew you'd find me some day," the woman who answered the phone had said. Lisa had a scoop: A first wife whom McGraw never mentioned, even in his most confessional moments in his books or with Larry King.
McGraw is a harsh, charismatic man of high intelligence and higher self-regard. His quest for success has left a trail of dislike, admiration, envy, loyalty, respect, mistrust, and gossip. Not surprisingly, pissed-off people were happiest to speak with us. McGraw's friends and colleagues, who would presumably have painted a different portrait, were likely to agree to interviews then never again return an email or phone call. We assumed they were checking with McGraw before speaking with us and being warned off. Eventually, our calls to the McGraw camp were formalities. We called because we had to, expecting nothing.
People told us tales about McGraw's bullying childhood, youthful indiscretions, betrayals, infidelities, and rages. The most damning accusations were whispered, too tentative for us to touch them. We cautiously used only what seemed plausible with appropriate qualifiers. We ran everything past Wiley's attorney, who advised us to remove a tale or two
Meanwhile, I seemed to have lost my benign ambivalence towards Dr. Phil. After six months of pounding my head against the wall of silence, of being treated like a bad smell, of hearing stories about McGraw's rages and self-serving life strategies, of watching him bellow at his guests every weekday at 3, I turned sour on the doctor. I admired his success. I'd learned some things from him. But he'd become my nemesis.

Excerpt:
I also remember every early interview with Dr. Phil, in which he would unabashedly proclaim that he'd never been any good at counseling. He was lousy as a therapist because he lacked patience. He could see the problem and wanted to “cut to the chase” without all that bothersome growth and self-awareness.
Hang on. Err. Rewind that for me.
Anyone who has been through therapy (and if you haven't you should sign up now) knows that therapy is not about locating the troublesome behavior and shouting “quit that!” We don't gamble compulsively because we are too stupid to know that gambling compulsively is not a great idea. Compulsive gamblers are filling a need. The trick is to figure out what need is being filled, where that need first arose, and how addressing these early sources can educate, enlighten, and unburden us. Shouting “quit that!” has a certain backwoods, dumpster-diving, down-home, we-don't-need-no-book-learnin' charm, but it doesn't work.
Addictions are a covering up of a bigger problem even AA would tell you that. Choosing not do deal with what the real issue is. Counselors should help you. Just because they have a degree doesn't make them good. Dr. phil tells you like it is which some can't handle. I have been in therapy and they will not always tell you what you want to here. There job is to try and help fix the problems and give you options. They can't force anyone to do stuff. Therapy only works for those who are open to new learning.
My Dad would not listen in therapy but now attends work shops on self improvement. Strange. I guess 2 divorces opened his eyes. RN
I find it amazing that so many people think that what they here or see on TV is the truth about all. Dr. Phil does have some good shows but obviously this one was one sided. It is so much fun when everyone passes judgement on people taking Adderall. Well I should have mentioned kavorkian..... that would have proved a point as well. Well, I have a troll at work.Wow - that would suck and I too would be enraged. That is rude to go up to someone and spew that. The only thing I could recommend is that you ask them "so - who in your family has ADHD?" and "so where did you get your medical degree?" - let them know they don't have a friggin' clue about this from a 5 minute sound bite on "Dr." Phil. That guy tears me up - he endorses toxic diet pills (only pulling his name when people get sick) and knocks all other meds. Even put a forward in one of the psycho anti-med books out there.
Remember YOU know more than they ever could about ADHD. Trust me friend we all here (trolls and Tom Cruise excluded) are on your side and you won't get that from the general population here.
We know you're ok! And we have all the facts brother!
It is so sad.I'd say "you listened to a TV-hustling, mentally deficient hillbilly for your information and trust him. Therefore you are a mentally deficient person in your thought process. You don't have any hold over my opinions."
But that's just me. And I'd have punched him. Again - just me.
I came real close.
Assholiness - sounds like a catholic title!! LOL!! "yes your Assholiness".
When someone spouts to me "but Dr. Phil is a Doctor! - I mention that Dr. Mengela was a physician and I doubt he'd get much respect as to opinions he had held during WWII. Shuts some up.
Don't worry about anyone who takes their total info from a talk show. They are dust in the wind in the end and you shall prevail.
Good you didn't sock him. Freedom is good group showers are bad.
That's exactly why I don't tell anyone at work. Educating people is great - but I'm not willing to put my career at risk to do it. I sympathize with you - that guy sounds like a major ignorant asshole. On the other hand, I wonder "What did you THINK would happen when you tell coworkers you have a 'mental' condition/disorder/whatever and that you're on medication - ESPECIALLY medication that's so often confused with the most widely publicized 'drug du jour' - meth?
In a perfect world, people would be understanding and attempt to educate themselves - but people are people, even at work.
I don't tell people at work I'm ADHD or that I take Ritalin LA. None of their business and I hear the stories of employers then viewing you in a different light than before.Dr Phil is a tele evangelist dr.
what a joke! Sorry you have too deal with coworkers like that..man it sucks...I lost what was a good friend for the same sh*t, although he is well educated now.Bugzapper,Mr. Bugzapper
I am the person you called a Troll last month. Dr. Phil is scripted and he is totally different then when he was on Oprah. He was a court Psycologist that helped Oprah with her Cow trial. He made millions doing that. His biography is on A&E
sometimes. To me he is getting some real winners almost like a calm Jerry Springer. He endorses treatment centers. I have been living with ADDHD for
0ver 30 years.
I would like him to live in a home of someone unmedicated addhd for about a week.
My son was going to clean his room tonight and he looks at it for about an hour and leaves the room. He organizational skills are not there. He trys. People have to accept the Addhd and go on. I used to get so mad about his messes ( my husbands mother is clean freak) I end up doing it myself or he tries to help.

The shows need people who specialize and really know what they are talking about. I do know that not all Convential DR's are good as well either also. Convental methods are not the only answers though. All they can go by is what information they have from us parents really. School staff should stay out of it all if you ask me. All they should handle is the educational needs of a child. Until a school program that is designed to help all kids is in place us parents will have a fight on our hands. I say the education system should change. It has been bad for along time. We are behind some Countries educationally. Unit study teaching is a good method to me. You also need to do the basics until you get them before moveing on. It all build from there anyhow. Just my opinion. RN[QUOTE=Hemmie] These guys are full of shiat and should be send to Baghdad with a sign superglued to their crotches saying "shoot me here, cause i am an a-hole".
