My son has both adhd and tourrettes. My experience was that my son had tics both without meds and with meds. Some meds (adderall) made his tics much worse. Ritalin based meds didn't aggravate the tics until he had a large dose (40 mgs of Metadate CD did it for him).
If the ADHD symptoms are severe, I wouldn't worry about trying stims. It helped my son for 2 years. He is now off meds, but they didn't harm him at all and his tics went back to pre-med levels the day after we stopped.
Like most side effects tics typically vanish over a short time. Studies recently show that long-term exposure to ADHD meds don't cause any more tics than placebo. So I'd not worry. They thought it could aggravate Tourette's syndrome but apparently it's been disproven! Most likely Tourette's would be aggravated more by the child being overexcited by overmedication than the med itself. Makes sense to me.
The best way to be sure for yourself is get a referral to a pediactric psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD in children. That way you get the most up-to-date info on the meds from the horse's mouth. Very good idea for you.
i think banna shake would kinda help the tics go way there going away wat banna do they help relieve stress cause when u stress you tic more but i was taking 20mg of generic ritalin and i would take the med and then make a banna shake to me it really work if you take adderall not to sure
Hi mom. Does your son experience anxiety or social phobia at all. If you're not sure, does the father of your son or you experience it at all, or have you ever experienced it for a period of time? The reason I ask about his father, or you, is because it could be genetic, and it isn't showing in him yet, maybe not until his teen years. Anyhow, my point is, if you answered yes to any of these questions, stimulants along with those symptoms would make his tics worse. For example, I went through a mild stage of anxiety for a couple of years, and being on stimulants at the same time, I experienced tics when I got really nervous, it's really traumatizing, and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.Oh yea, I've been off the meds for the last 6 months, and my tics are slowly fading, but I still get them every now and then.I'm new here, this is my very first post, but I was going to bring up tics. I noticed after taking adderall for about a month, I started having muscle tics. The first day it was my eye (looked real stupid winking at people all day), the next day my gluteal muscle (a LARGE muscle to have twitching!) and the next day my thumb, so bad that I couldn't write or type. I quit the adderall for two weeks, and today is my first day taking it again. So far, no tics, but I feel that it may have built up in my system before, causing the tics. I've NEVER had any tics before (maybe the occasional muscle spasm, but nothing like that).
Sorry i'm not much help, just telling you my story.
