Most of the ADHD meds (frankly most chemicals to change brain chemistry) affect sexual function. The sexual desire and workings are controlled by a very large mix of chemicals in the brain (dopamine, norepinephrine, seratonin, etc.) and change a bit of it and there's bound to be a change.
Most side effects (including sexual) go away or lessen after a while. If not the doctor could change you to another or lessen the dose if the dysfunction is disturbing for you.
For me on dexedrine at first I found a loss of drive and function. It started a month into it and went away fast . Now I find a sex drive increase so it's not all bad!
Do check with your MD. Most times these things are no big deal but there are times that you may have something else at work that needs to be worked on (i.e. diabetes which can come fast).
I wish you well.
Hello all...I'm new to this board and newly diagnosed ADHD. 26 years old and otherwise healthy. I've been on Strattera for 3 weeks as my doctor wants to slowly ramp up my dosage.
I don't know the board yet, and I don't want to offend anyone by being too explicit, so I'll ask this question in the most general terms I can. If it's ok to be more specific, I don't have a problem doing so. I just didn't want to assume anything.
About the end of my first week on Strattera I noticed what I believe is a sexual side effect of the drug. It's not a major prolbem, but it is something that has never happened to me before. It has happened once or twice since then - over the course of two weeks - out of maybe 10 times being with my fiance. So it is not every time.
My doctor never mentioned any possibility of sexual side effects, but it is definitely happening. I have a follow up appointment with him on Friday at which I will certainly bring this up, but I was wondering if anyone else here has experienced any sexual side effects with this drug. If so, what were the circumstances (i.e. was it just at first? when you increased the dosage?)? Also, if so, did it eventually go away?
This is the only side effect I am experiencing that I can identify. I'm not having any of the listed ones.
Thank you so much...I hope this topic is ok for the board.
AmBull238734.5941550926Hey there and welcome to the board! Unfortunately, I can't help you here, because I have never taken Strattera. However, I definitely think that your question/topic is appropriate...and I would think that any mature adult would agree. I hope that someone else can address your question more, and let us know what the dr. says.
Take care.
