Straterra vs stimulants for inattentive | ADHD Information

Hi!

I haven't tried Straterra and I was only diagnosed this week, but I also have the inattentive type with all the same funny quirks you are going through as well, let me tell ya, I am the QUEEN of disorganization LOL :o)

Anyways, I am on Dexedrine which is a stimulant and it has only been a few days, but the difference is amazing for me. I take 10mgs in the morning and then another 10mgs in the afternoon. I can focus, I can get things done, I can organize myself on what I need to get done that day, I can actually remember things for once - it has truly been a life saver for me. I guess maybe I am lucky that (so far) the first med I am being put on is working for me. I can pay attention and focus on all these things I could never do before. It also doesn't make me feel high at all (even though it is an amphetemine), it basically just gets rid of that foggy feeling in my head so I can focus etc. When it wears off for me, I get a little bit sleepy, but nothing terrible like extreme fatigue. I also notice it is wearing off simply when I start bouncing around from one thing to another and not finishing anything LOL that is when I know it is time for the next dose. So I don't go through any of those "crashes" that some people experience when their stimulant med wears off.

I know Dexedrine is similar to Adderall, but not exactly the same. I think they have one ingredient in common. It might be worth it to ask for just straight Dexedrine and see what your doctor says.

That is just my two cents on my med

Hello all!  I am a 31 y/o male that was diagnosed about 5 months ago with ADHD, the inattentive type, and I have since been trying to find the right medications to help with my symptoms and was wondering if anyone could provide any advice.

The main symptoms that I have are lack of focus (go figure!), lack of motivation, lack of organization, and difficulty getting up and going in the mornings.  I always seem to have energy in the afternoons and evenings.  I don't have any problems sleeping though.

I was originally started on 40mg per day of Straterra which was then increased up to 80mg per day taken in the morning.  I didn't feel that this was doing much for me so I was then also given Adderall to take at 5mg up to 3X per day.  Some days this seemed to work, and others it really makes me feel like crap and is ineffective.  I have tried going off of the Straterra all together and just gone with the Adderall and this caused me to be much more irritable.

So, I am curious what others' experiences have been on Straterra versus stimulant medications for the inattentive type of ADHD?  Do you find that the stimulants better treat your inattentive symptoms than the Straterra, or vice versa?  I have been getting quite frustrated with this and would appreciate any advice/feedback that you all could give.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

I am back on Concerta (a time-release stimulant). I spent about three months on Straterra, and had strange results.

The Concerta works great! I feel veryu focused and energetic. the only problem is that being a typical stimulant, the body will build up a tolerance and you will eventually require larger doses.

My doctor has a program of allowing increasingly larger doses for about six months or so, then taking a month off the medication to clear it out of the system. then I can start back at my beginning dosage.

There does not seem to be any type of withdrawl when stopping Concerta other than a little extra sleepiness for a few days.
