Smallmom, The one counselor also said that she doesn't think my son is bi-polar because he doesn't have the high mood swings that are classical of bi-polar, he only has the lows. I am not saying he is either, or not one or the other, time will tell. It is harder to diagnose in a child. I am new to this board, but have been dealing with these issues for well over a year.

It certainly is hard to diagnose bipolar in children!! Many of the traits adults show as bipolars are normal behavior for children (childlike behavior and bouts of temper come to mind).  The drive and obsessive tendencies don't usually show up til later and they depend on that too as diagnosis.

It's fairly rare for bipolar in kids as compared to ADHD.  And the councillor should be able to gauge if you go back a few times.  Most ADHD diagnosis in kids works best after several meet ups and a visit to school to get history as well.  One visit is not the best way to determine ADHD.

It gets better as you learn more about ADHD.  You'll see signs that you can get on top of quicker and with a proper councilling on behavior modification he'll be eventually able to hit the brakes on urges and focus better.  Takes work and ADHDers don't like to put out effort if they don't feel they have to.  But it's workable 99 percent of the time.  Glad you found us.
