Speed reading

Does anyone find that speed reading is very helpful for them?

All of my life I've always hated to read. Any assignments involving long reading I would always leave until last or just not do it. I found that reading took me forever and I did not retain the information very well.

The other day I looked up information about ADD and the way people with ADD/ADHD read. I read that those with ADD/ADHD tend to accel at speed reading. So I gave it a try. I found that using speed reading made reading somewhat fun. When I tried it, I also found that I wasn't too bad at picking up information and details. However, practice makes perfect so I plan on getting books that teach speed reading.

This is a miracle in my eyes...Reading actually being fun and being able to read super fast and know what I'm reading??? This just seems unreal. I suggest that everyone reads more about speedreading and the benefits for those with ADD/ADHD. Here are some sites:

I also read at super-fast levels.  Mostly because I tend to get bored if I scan slowly.  But fiction books if I'm enjoying it I'll read a page once fast then reread slower to get the nuances.  Haven't in ages though since on my meds books don't hold the same wonder they used to .

I can also read upside down at normal level.  That's only because I'm a nosy so-and-so LOL

haha thats so awesome u can read upside down. What do you mean your meds have taken away from reading? Isn't medication supposed to help for reading?

I have heard it helps but I just am not driven as I once was to read.  It was nearly obsession - and sci-fi was my thing as a teen and early 20s.  Read one a night - had to finish no matter if I stayed up through . Not good during school I tell you!

I read magazines a lot - computer mags, psychology today, heavy metal mag.  But often I read on the internet now which is the same I'd guess!  So I guess I do read - after all I read every post on this thread every day.  Yes people I saw my name and my girl being bounce around your new story.  Didn't think I did did ya? LOL!! No worries.

Upside down has helped - I can follow the handwriting when I'm being assessed at work or other places.  I can read as someone types without seeing the screen too - good thing I'm a decent guy or I could use most people's passwords without worry.  but I wouldnt' that would be so wrong.  I wasn't a hacker as a kid sure not starting as I near 40! Jail would kill me - I can't even think that way.

yeah i could never do something like use someones password. i would feel so guilty and like a hypocrite. well ive never liked to read, but now im going to try the speed reading/ skimming method in order to make reading more fun and not so long and boring.

WOAH! I have that problem too! I've always been bad at reading, which is really hard in school because they assign books a lot faster than i can finish them, so i usually give up.  i've wanted to try speedreading for a while, but i havn't gotten around to it, this is good motivation though, and hopefully I won't have to B.S. so much stuff i havn't read in english class now! haha, thanks ADD?

youre welcome

My daughter has always disliked Reading.  Unless it was something that had to do with animals.  I was willing to do anything to help her Reading score.  I bought her a program I saw off of an infomercial. It's called Eye Q  Infinite Mind & Body.  WWW.asseenontvnetwork.com  Eye Q.   It will help with regular Reading and speed Reading.  It is well worth the money.  Her scores have sky rocketed.  Try it and see what I mean.  My ADHD inattentive child likes to read now and reads much faster.  It even helps those who just want to read faster.  Angie

hey Angie. I looked at the site for the Eye Q and i tried the demo. By the end of it my reading speed almost doubled. I think this program can be very helpful for making reading much easier. thanks for the suggestion. maybe i'll try it out.  i agee only mine only wint up by 46 from 238 to 284 Interesting I'm definately going to try speed reading.

My reading problem is my eyes basically read faster then my mind can comprehend. I'll read every single word on a page and have no idea or only a vague impression of what I had just read when I get to the bottom.

It's aggrivating because I enjoy reading. I'd have to enjoy it to put up with having to re-read pages several times just to get the information.

OK just tried the eyeQ thing now I'm wondering what the numbers mean.

I got 222 wpm first and 245 wpm the second time.

I tried to read quickly since it was timed but also made sure I slowed down enough to actually comprehend everything I just read instead of doing my usual quick skim.

While I was reading it felt like I was reading really slowly. Again this could be because it was timed. A score above 200 wpm sounds like it is high but maybe because I'm associating wpm with typing and 200 wpm would be high for typing. Obviously you should be able to read a lot faster then you type.

Anyone have any ideas what the numbers mean? What's considered slow, average or fast?

MafiaKiddo38797.6882523148hey mafiakiddo. check  out this this website which talks a little bit about speed reading: http://www.readingsoft.com/

Also I copied and pasted a chart, which explains certain reading rates (wpm) and what they mean, that came from the above site.
ScreenPaperComprehensionReader profile
100 wpm110 wpm50%  Insufficient
200 wpm240 wpm60% Average reader
300 wpm400 wpm80% Good reader
700 wpm1000 wpm85% Excellent, accomplished reader
Great thanks for the info. I'm going to check it out.

I found this part interesting:

Research shows that reading is around 25% slower from a computer screen then from paper.

I took the test on that page and I got around the same speed 224 wpm but my comprehension was 82%

So either I'm slowing myself down too much when I'm taking these tests to make sure I comprehend them or I'm reading normally but the wpm are less because it's on a computer screen instead of a printed page.

Either way whether I'm an average or good reader there is still lot's of room for improvement.

getting rid of anti-ritalin's threadsCan help if tracking isn't a big problem for you. Eye q is aform of Vision therapy. Yes helps this is the only reason our son reads at all. He had none of that skill before seeing a therapist and prisms worn. Some require surgury and this.  It is a sucess. The problem is caused by  eye stimming. His speed is only 93 though.oldtimer38855.7410763889I think there is some misunderstanding about what speed reading means, it is not skimming or 'relaxation techniques' and it does help dyslexic, adhd and add, here are some details in a magazine article www.speedreaderx.com/article1.htm
