Therapy? | ADHD Information

Hi Organic, I've been to therpy, and "they" say it's always good and in the longrun will help you. You probably should give your history to the social worker, since you have no psychologist close. BUT, once you establish yourself, it might be worth your time ( I know it must be hard to get free time w/kids) to make the 2 hr drive.

I can't say for sure, but I think socials are the only ones who do the the therpy. The rest is for the higher ups. My first therpy session was ok. Basically she just got my history. Than the next time I went, I had to rehash my past. Not pleasent! The next visit, I was expecting a different kind of session. OK, you already know my childhood sucked, so can't we move on to making the present better? NO, she thought I had to come to terms w/ the past. I left thinking "why did I have to come here"? I never went back.

Now I'm established w/a new psych. and they also thought therapy would be good. This time I thought it must be more than just reliving bad times from the past, since they already knew how screwed up it was. Wrong again! She was very nice, but this one wanted to help me except the fact that I'm considered "Hispanic", eventhough I told her I"VE ALREADY EXCEPTED THAT! I wanted to say:I know it screwed up my childhood looking different from my moms side of the family and most friends, but can't we talk about my ADD, you know, the real problem? For me, it was a wast of money & time. & 1hr. NOW REMEMBER, this is just MY opionion & I live in Florida. It might be different in Canada.

My rule of thumb is that if I'm paying for something, I should get something useful out of it. Give it a try, but if they can't help you in the ADD dept. I would say it's a wast of money. Also Organic, I can't remember from a previous posting if you are on any meds, but if you are, a social probably coulden't prescribe. Here they can't. Also you said you saw a psych.10 yrs ago. Remember that was a long time ago. Now most know that ADD/ADHD really does exsist. Like I said before, it's easier said than done, but if therapy dosn't work out, that drive may be well worth it. And if you have to take meds, they may give you several mos. supply, so you won't have to go as often and also help work through the problem. Again, just my opinion. Someone else may have something more positive to report.

GOOD LUCK with your move! and keep us posted

Can you tell the kids are sleeping? I actually have time to post LOL :o)

Who is currently in therapy? I am moving to a really small town in 2 weeks and I promised my doctor I would follow up with the social worker there (this person has a MSW). That is about the only optinon I have. Any other psychologist/psychiatrist would be at least 2 hours away.

I'm just wondering, what do you talk about in therapy? How do they help you with your ADHD? I saw a psychiatrist way back about 10 years ago and she totally misdiagnosed me (she said I was Bi Polar and I can tell you that I am not. A lot of the same characteristics yes, but now that I compare BP and ADD, I realize I am totally ADD/ADHD and the depression was a result of what undiagnosed ADD can do to a person).

So I am a little nervous given my past history with therapists. I am totally open to it ( I think everyone needs  a good dose of therapy every now and again LOL) but I am just wondering what to expect?

Have I mentioned how thrilled I am this board is here! Gosh, I don't know what I would do without you guys! LOL :o)
