question

If you go to a NeuroPsych (the best at diagnosing) you can have him tested for ADHD among other things that cause hyperactivity and inattention. My son was diagnosed at two with ADHD (this kid hung from the rafters). The problem with an early diagnosis is that it is only a "working" diagnosis (tentative). Nobody really knows, at a very young age, what the problem is, at least not for sure, and it often changes as the child ages and more stuff starts to show. But if you want early help and intervention, I recommend skipping all other types of professioanls, as they just don't take as much time to test the kids, and go straight to a NeuroPsych (they are on staff at Child's Hospials and University Hospitals). At least you'll have a start and some sort of "working" dx. that could help your child right away. Don't expect a pediatrician, regular psycologist, social worker, school counselor, or teacher to diagnose correctly. They aren't that aware of all the things it could be. Again, see a NeuroPsych for more accuracy.

It's hard for a diagnosis without being able to express feelings but I've seen it done.  A good pediactric psychiatrist can handle it if experienced with ADHD.

Also testing is good because a thorough one will look at allergies, thyroid and heavy metal issues.  All can mimic ADHD and the symptoms are nearly the same.

Get child checked if nothing peace of mind will come of it.

Thanks all.. I am looking a little more into everything before I jump to any conclutions...

but I can assure you that he isn't from a dysfunctional family, so I think that need not apply... however I can see what your coming from. My doctor has said he believes it's just normal 2 year old hyper behavior. Hopefully he is right. He also said that is would probably be better diagnosed around age 4-5.... like many of you said. I guess I'll just play it by ear.

Im not sure, just worried I suppose.

I have seen as young as 4, but I think most wait until they enter school. I think it would be hard to go by only one person/place to dx a child. The doctor doesn't know wether the childs behavior is based on the way the parent is raiseing the child, or a true AD/HD dx. Once they go to school, and are in a stable/routine atmosphere with other children, the Doctor can get a more well rounded opinion on the child from several different people/sources.

I knew something was different with my son from about age 1-2. I questioned his Ped. at about age 4, and they said it was best to wait until 5, until they enter school. At 2-4 they are all somewhat hyper, and change focus easily. Even though we'd all like to think we are all good parents, there are many disfunctional families out there, and how can you exspect a Ped./Doc. to know what is happening in the home that might be contributing to the behavior. Unfortunately, kids don't come with instructional manuals!

I have seen a child as young as 4 years old at the Dr Ofc for testing.  I think 2 1/2 might be a bit too young to participate in testing.  I have a 2 1/2 year old who acts just as you describe...and I have 7 1/2 yoa diagnosed ADHD child.  The oldest did not act anything like the youngest is acting.  The youngest is hyper and on full throttle all the time.  But, at that age...that is pretty normal.  Discuss with your doctor and see what they think.  Personally I think they should prescribe meds to all parents of 2 yoa children to survive the day.LOLHi all, Im new to these sort of issues but just wondering if anyone can tell me how early on a child can be diagnosed with ADHD? My son is two and a half and demonstrates alot of the symptoms of it.

He is a nightmare in public (simply because I cannot keep him occupied with anything) he never sits still... to change, for punishment, for dinner, for the car ride, in a store, in a resteraunt.... NOWHERE!!! Im at the end of my rope.. it is so hard to control him. He is not a bad child and I am not looking for a way to excuse his bad behavior, but the way he acts 95% of the time I find hard to believe is just normal childhood hyperness.

Any other symptoms anyone could give me examples of would be appriciated... or how I can go about getting to a doctor for any tests or diagnosis.

Thanks in advance,
Brieanna
