My son was diagnosed with SID, double vision and ADHD at age 8.  We have never medicated him, but he has been to Occupational Therapy for the SID and vision therapy for the double vision.  We also try to watch his diet as Red 40 and caffiene seem to bring on extreme mood swings.  One weekend when my father took my son fishing, he brought along Dr. Pepper to drink.  My son was awake for over 48 hours!!

Recently my son has developed some major anger problems and sleeping problems.  He has just turned 12 and I question if horomones can change ADHD behavior?

His doctor suggested Strattera.  Just wondering if anyone else had similar situations?  How have you and your doctor handled them?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

i think if hormones can change the personality of a child without adhd - it can certainly have the same effect on one with adhd.

Hormonal changes at puberty for adhd children will not make the child more impulsive or inattentive and/or hyperactive. However, anxiety levels will increase as the hormonal changes will affect their coping skills as peer pressure kicks in, school work might be more challenging or like any teen, their need to fit in with other children on a social level becomes most important to them and since many ADHD'RS have a problem blending in socially, this  could also produce anger and frustration. You mention that your watching his diet with regard to Red40 and caffiene intake as it brings on mood swings. Dr Peper has 41 millgrams of caffiene ina 12 ounce can! No wonder your son didnt sleep for 48 hours lol However, caffeine has been known to actually awaken neourtransmitters on a small scale somewhat like ritilan so if your child is truly ADHD, caffiene consumption wouldnt produce mood swings. If your child has a sensativity towards Red 40 dye, I would see an allergist before accepting a diagnosis of adhd as sometimes allergies look very much like adhd. Good luck and keep us posted
