weight loss

Thanks Glen!  Yes, she normally has breakfast before meds.  This is really about the only time she seems hungry.  I sometimes send her a Lunchable Cracker Stacker in her school lunch.  She does seem to eat these better than other things.  She is picky, and will not eat a generic equivalent of these.  We have a doctor's appt in a week, and will discuss weekly weigh in's then.  I don't think that the doctor has been overly concerned because her dad is a nurse at the local hospital, and he knows that we monitor this pretty closely.  The weight loss has not appeared remarkable before, I think because she is growing rapidly in height. For this reason, she doesn't seem to vary alot weight wise.   However, now, after being sick a few days ago-my she looks thin!  That has been the deal with my daughter for 3yrs..She is now 8 and has just started to gain weight she is up to 47lbs.(not very heavy) She has been on at least 3 different stimulants not to mention sleep aides...The doctor tried to tell me to feed her her favorites she has none no desire to eat...Well now she has been taking strattera for 6 months they say it has little or no effect on there appetite..Well she didnt gain any weight has had no headaches(she would get i call them migrains)..So the insurance company is going to quit paying for the strattera enless i get preaproval from the doctor well the only way to get that is to prove she cant take the stimulants...So they desided to put her on along with the strattera  Risperdal.25mgs..She was having emotional problems at school and home...Well since she has been on the Risperdal her appetite has SKY ROCKETED...She is eating very well...My 11 1/2 year old Grandson has been on Adderal since he was 8. He still doesn't eat lunch , but his Mom waits dinner until seven or eight in the evening when the pill has worn off and he is hungry. This year he has kept his weight on. When he was first put on Adderal he would acuse his Mother of trying to kill him by making him take the meds that made it hard to eat He now understand more of this problem and tries to force himself to eat at least a little even if he isn't hungry.I know that this is a common problem with ADHD medications.  My daughter was not much of an eater to start with.  When put on adderall xr, her appetite really dropped off.  When the depakote was added, her appetite became almost non-existant.  She appears to be getting taller, but never gains any weight.  She had the flu last weekend, and now she is really thin and appears pale.  I was giving her pediasure, but now she does not even want that.  She is not even very interested in the snacks that she used to love.  Has anyone else dealt with a situation like this?

It's a common trouble when starting adderall.  Perhaps try and wait to give her the morning dose until after she's got some breakfast in her?  How does your doctor see her apparent lack of appetite?  Is she being weighed weekly at the doctor's office as is recommended by the manufacturer of the meds?

She should be weighed weekly.  If there's even a small drop a change should be considered.  If she's stable or gaining it may be that she's gone over to nibbling when you aren't looking rather than big meals.  The nerves that register full are on a finer trigger in med takers so she may do better with a cracker and cheese, grapes and nibble foods.

After a flu you may want to cut her meds off until she regains her stomach.  But do please talk with your doctor! And if they don't weigh I'd be looking for someone with more concern for the med warnings than that.

Weight can certainly be a concern.  My daughter is in same boat as your child.  She might only eat 2 bites of lunch.  At 7 1/2 yoa she is 4' and 40lbs she is steady on the 5 % line.  I do manage to get a good breakfast or instant breakfast down her.  Doc suggested the instant breakfast because she can get more vitamens and fat from that then a bowl of cereal or some scrambled eggs.  Might be something you can throw in there to help.  Good Luck!

piggirl38748.3075347222Hi steppingstone my daughter is 4'3.and 47Lbs..TINY..The school sent home a report saying she was extremely underweight and that is what made the doctor open there eyes a little more now they check her weight every 6 weeks...I sometimes feel i cant win for losing i have an underweight daughter and an overweight son and not to mention an extremely overweight dog(she is a beagle and weights in at 65lbs)but hey she is very happy.....Please keep it touch..Star...Thanks, Star and piggirl!  I guess my daughter is not as much underweight as a lot of kids are!  our doctor has mentioned instant breakfast, and I keep forgetting to get this for her when I am at the store.  My husband and I have both wished that we could give her some of our weight, as we have the opposite problem.  We also have a lab who weighs 113 lbs!  He's happy, and a great dog, but we worry about his hips! Thank you again, and good luck! steppingstone38748.5365509259

Star-thanks, I will ask the doctor about this next week.  My daughter seems to have very few favorites, also, and these seem to vary from day to day.  I'm curious, how tall is your daughter.  Mine is about 4'2", and weighs 60 lbs.  She is the same age as your daughter.  She seems very thin to me, but maybe she's not so thin after all?  I'm glad to hear that your daughter is doing better.  I know how hard it is when you feel like they are wasting away.  My daughter ate everything on her plate tonight, and I was so happy!

Jaquie, yes, I serve dinner at about this same time for the same reason.  She still doesn't appear hungry. She just can't seem to make herself eat yet if she is not hungry. She does relate this to medications, but thank heavens she realizes her need for them.  She did get angry with me several months ago, when I started her on a multi-vitamin.  She felt that this was decreasing her appetite even more.  Howerver, now she gets angry with me when I forget to give it to her.  You just can't please some kids!
