How do you know its wearing off???
I just started two days ago, and when I woke up this morning, I felt the same way. I had to take deep breaths to calm myself down. I felt so "speedy, and unfocused."
Then once I took the pill about 1/2 hr later, I was fine until the afternoon. Then I was just tired and restless. I actually took a nap, which I was surprised since I haven't slept in like two days. Maybe a total of 10 hours.
Do you take the Adderal XR or regular Adderall?
Kermit - perhaps you could supplement your meds with a caffeinated beverage when you know the time is about right? You can pretty much set your watch to the meds wearing off after you've been on a week or so. So when you feel it coming (or check your watch and see that it's near) you could have a red bull, mountain dew energy drink or my favorite a nice cuppa coffee! Caffeine is like a mild stimulant that helps many of us with ADHD get through the bums and valleys we hit during taking meds.
The nice part is that caffeine is a fairly inert chemical - doing no harm and leaving your body fast (you don't own coffee you just rent it LOL). So give it a shot! Just write down your ups and downs (kind of an accurate biorythym chart I guess) and then schedule some java or other drink to help keep you from hitting a crash point.
Best of luck friend!
I got that same feeling on methyphenidate, since its a stimulant, one would think that it would happen as it kicks in. but not for me.
I'm thinking that, at least for me, that my body temporarily overcompensates for the lack of stimulation temporarily unitl everything kind of normalizes again.
Kind of like when people faint, the vagus nerve over the heart ( that regulates heart beat.) compensates for the extreme stimulation ( like bad news in a hospital, death in family etc.) and actually slows down the heart instead of speeding it up like it was programmed to do. We dont get the oxygen we need to our brain and down we go!
so, I was thinking that maybe it would work the other way too for some people. no extra stimulation, maybe that nerve overcompensates by causing the heart to beat too quickly for a moment. Does that make sense?? Of course I could totally be off, it is complete conjecture and I do not have ANY medical experience.
Also, I wanted to add that as time goes on, that reaction doesnt happen as much for me.. I don't know how long you have been on a stimulant, but if you are new at it, it might stop happening over time. As always, check with your doc any side affect that is bothersome to you.

I agree. caffeine work's to get us over those little bump's in the road,
