Combining stimulant w/ non-stimulant?? | ADHD Information

Yes it is common to mix Strat with a stim, since many people observe that strattera doesn't help too much with hyper and impulsive issues.  I heard a phsych. speak last evening about adhd meds, and she said she combines strattera with stims for patients sometimes, depending on what the patient needs. She said since straterra is a 24 hour drug, it helps some of her patients when they wake up and in the AM. Stims give them the added help they need during the day.

Yes definitely sleepy. For the first 8 hours. So son takes it at night, then has the 'good' effects during the day and the benefit of sleeping at night. Sometimes takes sleeping tablet at night to aid as well.

My Dr didn't know about combining sim with non-sim, but my research on the net found that it is done in other countries.

Strat, only works in 50% cases, it also takes 3 weeks or so to work, so you do need to combine at first anyway. Otherwise you and son will fine life a little too hard.

So we've been fighting w/ these stupid meds for over a year now. We will think we find soemthing that works then a month later it stops working. My 55lb 8yo is on 72mg Concerta and can't sleep since on it and have been having to try different things to get him to sleep at night for over 2 months now. So I talk w/ his pediatrician today (his psychiatrist was just sent to Iraq for 3 months, so she is handling his medication while he is gone) and I told her that he's starting to blurt out and have a lot of issues w/ just talking talking talking during class again and is still sleeping like crap. I told her that increasing the Concerta is out of the question. His bio-mom (only has him every other weekend) said that her oldest daugher (different dads) is on both Concerta AND Strattera. So I mentioned it to the pediatrician and she said that she has never given both together but being that the Strattera can actually make some kids sleepy maybe it would be a good combination for him and since its a 24hr med. She is going to research it and then get back to me hopefully this evening yet (she's on call tonight). I'm just wondering if anyone else has combined the two. We're hoping that if it works well to actually cut back on the Concerta to 54mg and see if that would work.

Just curious what others know about combining these kind of medications!

TIA

Strattera does make one sleepy I suggest give at bed time if you try it. We were not happy with it. A Lady I spoke with says most parents she has spoken with dislike this med. She tests for Ld and adhd. Straterra makes you sleepy?

Do you have proof of this. How about first hand experience.

I have never heard strat makes you sleepy.
