When will we know? | ADHD Information

My son 9 year old has been taking Concerta for 6 months with WONDERFUL results.

Grades are better......behavior is better. He feels "in control." My question is when will we know his tolerance to the med warrants increasing the dose?  For now we will leave him at 18mg.  But we would like some symptoms to watch for.

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry at this early stage about tolerance.  For many children it never occurs.  For others it will need to be tweaked several times before optimal dosage and type is found.  Each person is unique and just be vigilant.

Most of the time you'll see tolerance to the dosage as when your child has begun to backslide - where there is a decline in activities and performance at the improved level.

Best yet don't leave his care in the hands of a GP.  Get a referral to a child psychiatrist as not only will he/she be able to gauge improvements/failures but can change meds and dosages without referral.  That's the best way.  Also you can get him onto Cognitive Behavior Therapy.  It's a therapy in which new ways are taught to alter normally ADHD behavior and to undo habits that form.

Best of luck - and don't worry until merited by actions!

Hi :)  The "sign" for us was he'd cry easily and he NEVER cries!!  Plus, he'd get more fidgety at school!

Good luck to you :)
