adderal XR and suicidal thoughts?!?!
Two suggestions:
Take him off the Adderrall
Get him to a Psychiatrist, not a Psycologist. This kid could have early onset bipolar and, if so, has no business being on stimulants.
ADHD is not a usual dx. for a mental hospital admission. Look beyond.
he is off the meds, and was admitted because of the suicide talk, not the ADHD. we have a meeting tomorrow with the doctor the see what the next steps are. We didn't have this issue with Adderall, but we did with SSRI antidepressants. Two of my 3 children exhibited suicidal, aggressive and "odd" behaviors while on Zoloft (my 12-year-old son) and Paxil (my 10-year-old daughter). Both kids now have working dxes of bipolar disorder and are on the mood stabilizer Depakote. Fortunately, they're improving with new docs, a new dx and new meds. Unless it really IS stand alone ADHD, stims can kick up trouble, especially Adderall.long long story, but trying to make it short. my 6 yr old has been on adderal since jan 4th, after switching from metedate. last tuesday, he got angry, and ran from the teachers. when they caught him and talked to him, he said he wanted to kill himself. the school did not call me. on thursday, a similar episode happened, but he started banging his head ont he floor saying he was trying to kill himself that way. he says if he were dead, his mom and dad would not worry, and he would not have any worries. he also says there is a bad voice in his head that tells him he needs to kill himself and he doesnt know how to stop it. he was admitted to a mental hospital on friday afternoon, and we are still waiting to get an appointment with the doc to talk about whats causing all this.everyone keeps saying"it must be the meds" has anyone ever experienced this?
We had some problems with adderall, but nothing like that. The voices are called auditory hallucinations, and good luck. Be patient. Always remember that this is not your or your child's fault
I hope your son is doing better. My daughter has had very few problems on the Adderall XR, but had some really strange behaviors on prozac and zoloft. On the prozac, she even claimed to hear a voice once telling her to harm herself. There were no problems once the prozac was discontinued. Keep us posted on how he is doing.
