My 7 year old son is in first grade and just dx with ADHD. His teacher seems to have no clue how to deal with this and has been making his life miserable. She has lots of rules she wants him to follow, but the school counselor would only allow her to put 3 behaviors on a chart for him to try.
Since day 1 the teacher has been telling him to keep track of his pencil and getting really upset when he can't. So, one of the behaviors on his chart was to keep track of his pencil. She didn't explain that the purpose of this was so he would be ready to work, just that he had to keep track of it.
Evidently the message go through, because the other day he actually glued the pencil to his desk. When she asked him why he would do that, he told her that he knew he wouldn't lose it this way!
My son had lived with us for six months as a foster child, when our social worker told me that I had to have my son evaluated for ADHD. I did not want to because I thought his hyperactivity could be attributed to a lot of things, and I did not want him labeled ADHD, if he wasn't. My social worker told me that legally I had to show I was at least aware of the possibility, whether I chose to medicate him or believe the dx or not. So, off to the psychiatrist we went...
When we arrived at the doctor's office, I was told that my son had to be in the room, while the psychiatrist and I talked, which I did not want to happen. I knew he would be uncomfortable with our talking about him, while he was in the room. Sure enough. He proceeded to do all his latest gymnastic moves, while the psychiatrist and I talked, flipping, rolling, and cartwheeling across the office. He interrupted us a couple times to ask, "Ever seen a kid do this?" while he contorted into different yoga postures.
Finally, I said to the psychiatrist, "I don't know about ADHD," and my son called out from the corner of the room, "Help! I think I'm stuck." The psychiatrist and I looked over at him, and he was sitting straight up, with both of his feet behind his head, stuck in a yoga position he could not get out of. The psychiatrist looked at me and said, serious as she could be, "I think you may be in denial."
lillian38764.4140625OMG, this is so funny!Supermarket stress - six year old stuck in the entry turnstile on Dollar Sale Day, argh! Thank you nice lady who got him out without calling the fire trucks out!!
My daughter managed to get stuck crosswise in the bathtub last night! She couldn't get out without help! I'm not sure how she managed this one!Recently had my almost 4yr old son pull the fire alarm at a truckstop we were having dinner at. Sirens and lights going off in the whole place. Fortunately they were not too upset when we confessed (and called the firestation to cancell before they showed up) As my husband walked towards us from the giftshop, of course I had to shout "Guess what your son did!"
When we had out first eval for adhd, my son , then 7, failed the TOVA test. After that came a visit with the doctor. My son was being the usual disruptive adhd boy. She told him he could sit in her desk chair. Then he was spinning. Now she tells him he can spin it's ok. I thought to myself, well she wanted to observe him. Sure enough, he ended up on the floor unhurt with the chair on top of him. She was quite startled.
We should have realized my GS was ADHD years before he was diagnosed. He was climbing 5ft walls at the age of 18 months. He used to sit on the wall and holler for the elderly couple next door(he wasn't talking yet but would holler Hey) They always gave him candy kisses. At the age of two he was stacking couch and love seat cushions to jump off of. At 18 months he snuck out of the cat door and took a walk around the neighborhood(talk about Panic)
When we took him to the Dr's from the time he started walking(took first step a week before he turned 8 months) He would swing from anything taller then him. He never laid still to have his diaper changed. In the evenings before bedtime ...the more tired he got the more active he got. Thank Goodness for Arm Leashes when we went to the Mall.
jacquie38770.4834027778InmyPJ's, you could see my daughter's kicks from the outside, also! Especially when I ate or drank something cold. I remember standing and talking to my then boss, when suddenly there was a hard kick from the inside. My blouse even flew up slightly over my abdomen! I remember her looking down and saying, "Wow! Chris are you okay?"Thank you...I needed the laughter after the day I have had.
My daughters father left when she was quite young. Before I met my current husband...(who after I became enganged to my daughter asked him in such a sweet voice, "will you marry me and be my Daddy?") my daughter would walk up to strange men and shout to me.."MOMMY IS THIS MY DADDY??" you would not believe how many of them would turn maroon and run for the hills!!!
I worked in a daycare center where I was allowed to bring my daughter with me. She was four years old. One day a week she went out to a special bus that would come to the center for kids that was equipped with mini trampolines, trapeezes, etc.On the way back in one day (Middle of February, and freezing here in Michigan) she thought that it would be great fun to pull the fire alarm!!! We had to get all 100 kids out of the building (Including the infants who were only wrapped in blankets!!)

What is it about our kids getting stuck? DD, before she could talk, had a very, very distinct cry that said 'I'm stuck.'
And I can really relate to the pre-natal adhd warning kicking. We were in the theater seeing 'Titanic.' When the ship hit the iceberg was the first time I felt her move, well jump! And she loved the in utero ice cream treats! DH could watch her jump around from the outside!
When my boys (twins where about 1 1/2 my mother and I took them for a check up. They where all over the place, grabbing for everything, pulling open doors, grabbing at the thermometer when the nurse took there temp, I mean non stop. She just looked at us, laughed and said, "you need to have a good sence of humor with these boys". My sister used to laugh too when they where into everything. One of them would get into something and just as soon as you got them out of it, there the other one was doing the same thing. By the time you stopped the second one from doing whatever he was doing the first one was on to something else! Oh, once when they where around 2 they got into the bathroom, we heard them screaming and laughing, we went in there and they where both in the tub (no water of course) unrolling the toilet paper, it was everywhere and they where having a great time! LOL! Man, I could probably go on all day!
I had suspected that my daughter had ADHD even when she was in the womb. From the time that I first felt her move, until the time that she was born, she was almost never quiet. She constantly moved, kicked, squirmed, etc, to the point that her constant movement would make me ill. At times, she would kick so hard, it would feel as if she was going to kick her way out! When she was about 5 years old, she had heard a peer talk about his mother expecting a younger sibling, and how he had put his hand on his mother's stomach to feel the baby kick. My daughter asked me about this, and I explained to her about how she used to move and kick inside of my "tummy." She looked at me, sighed, and rolled her eyes. She said, "I WANTED OUT!"tasmanian devil,
My son sounds the same exact way what meds is your daughter on? My son seems to have problems when the meds wear off. My daughter we have to keep the scissors away from her because she likes to give her brothers haircuts too. and herself I cry every time she does because she used to have the most buetiful blonde curls ![]()
CMRSmom,
My daughter has given herself a couple haircuts as well. She is taking focalin xr. There is an amazing difference on and off the med. She is so mature and clear thinking when she is mediated and so wildly impulsive when she is not. She is extremely bright and curious... a dangerous combination with imulsiveness. The meds are a god send though.
This is not a story about my child, but about an 8 year old boy who I have had in my daycare since he was was about 4. He has always been rather hyper, and always the trickster. The school is suspicioning that he is ADHD, and is arranging testing. Last evening, his mother shared a funny story with me. She took him with her to a doctor's appointment yesterday. Never one to be by himself in a waiting area, her son followed her from room to room, carrying his Gameboy. When she had to give a urine specimen, he waited outside the bathroom door. When she came out, he shot into the bathroom, closing the door. She went back to the examining room. The doctor came in with a strange expression on his face.
"Is this a joke?" he asked. She could not imagine what he was talking about. He went on to say, "That was water that you left in the cup in the bathroom!" She said, "What? No!" Then she realized what had happened. Her son had dumped the contents of the cup, and put water in it! He would, of course, not own up to it (he usually doesn't own up to his pranks). She said that the doctor obviously didn't appreciate it. I know him, and the man has no sense of humor!all three of mine did my daughter she got her binky stuck in her mouth one time it was one of circle back ones with no handle on it and my grandma and I didn't know what to do my husband went in there and just plucked it out I was like oh my god but she didn't cry, My cousin he used to flip his binky with his tongue we called it allieopHeres a short list of my 5 year old daughters transgressions this week. Last Saturday I decided to give my daughter the day off from her meds. I found my 2 year old son with his sleeves cut up to his elbows. So we took the scissors away from her. But apparently not all of them. The next day (before we could give her her meds) she gave my son a charming haircut. Off to the barber... Two days ago I heard my son crying from upstairs (once again before the meds) and found that she had tied him up by his neck to the door knob... OK that one was not funny... Never a dull moment here. really she is a sweet loving girl, just has no common sence or impulse control...I am so surprised that this thread is not filling right up. I have lots of stories I could share about my daughter.
Such as the time she decided she didn't want to go out for recess, 3rd grade I think, and it can be very cold here in the winter. She wrote a note to the teacher excusing her from having to go outside and she signed it Love, (and then my name). The teacher called me and told me she didn't want to get Kayla in trouble but she thought it was so funny! I still have the note to torture her with!!
Yes my daughter never crawled either, in fact I'm not sure she ever walked, went straight to running. She was never happy as an infant unless she was on her feet. The dr. did not like that either, but what are you to do? I could not hold and cuddle her, she would fuss, push, wiggle until you held her on her feet. She walked at about 7 months. I again thought there was something wrong with my 2nd born and by 9 months she wasn't walking and so I pushed her to walk. I eventually learned that my oldest was not the normal one.Did all of our ADHD kids kill our ribs?? LOL I had to give up wearing vests because my daughter caused my ribs to widen since her feet were lodged in my ribs the whole preganancy!! She learned to walk...not take steps..walk at 6 months. My 2nd waited until 8 months, thank goodness. The doctor said..."walking at 6 months???ohhhh no she cannot be walking yet...she needs to crawl first." I looked him dead in the eye and said..well maybe you should tell her that! She has been non stop since. When Pat was in 1st grade he did something wrong and it ended up with me in the principal's office talking with her and the teacher. They called Pat in and the principal looked across her desk and pointed to where the teacher was sitting and asked him "Patrick, what would you do if you came into this room and your dad was sitting there?" Pat looked around for a minute and looked back at the principal and said in a questioning voice: "Stand?"
The teacher dropped her head and clutched the arm of her chair and tried not to laugh. The principal had a really serious look on her face but you could tell she was about to lose it. I looked down and saw that she was stepping on her own toe in an effort not to laugh.
These stories are sounding very familiar. Especially the hands and feet under the ribs. That hurt. Imagine my surprise when I came home one hot summer day and found him sitting on the floor of the living room pouring a big box of styrofoam curls into an upturned fan he had taken apart. He was watching the swirling pattern as they spun around and landed everywhere throughout the room. It looked like it snowed in our house!

Wow, thanks for making me realize that things could be worse... my 5 yo
My oldest daughter was also extremely active in the womb. I would often have to put my fingers between her and my ribs, could not stand the feel of her toes and hands under my ribs. She was like a gymnast in there flipping around, end over end, side to side. When I was delivering her the dr. told me to stop pushing when her head came out because the cord was around her neck. I stopped pushing but she didn't. I felt her feet on the top of my stomach, one good push from her and the dr. almost dropped her!! She is 17 now and so far has lived her life in the same way, GO, GO, GO!!!
I really thought there was something wrong with my second born! She rarely moved, and small, gentle moves when she did. Every time I went to the dr. and heard her heart beat it was a relief, because I expected the worst. I was use to being beat-up!
