The EEG is more to rule out things like epilepsy, narcolepsy, brain trauma that can mask or mimic ADHD symptoms. It can't prove or disprove ADHD but is used so they don't medicate when unnecessary.
Infants are known to suffer seizures that seem to have no detectable cause. They sometimes just "go away" which puzzles and frustrates parents and MDs alike. Sometimes the EEG doesn't even show unusual activity during seizures which I am sure causes further grief and confusion.
The EEG and an EKG can keep the ADHD diagnosis both more accurate and safer. By knowing that you aren't causing any troubles for existing illness and using them when it's applicable you are being good parents and being informed well.
Lewiss - caffeine doesn't destroy any part of the brain! There have been so many tests on caffeine and if you have info that says that - it's wrong. Now let's say that caffeine did cause brain injury as you say there. Do you actually think that it would be hidden away? Absolutely not! There would be lawsuits against everyone from Starbucks to Bayer (aspirin contains caffeine) - and there would be a major uproar in the news. Nothing like bad news for a TV station.
Look back at what you post and try to understand how they look to someone who is up to date on science and ADHD. With a simple search on the web you can find everything both causes cancer and heals all injuries. Every crackpot with a computer posts and google keeps it all at your fingertips. Be discerning and ask more questions before you post it!!
Caffeine is working in our son. Frontol lobe isn't where our son issue is anyhow. His in the posterial left lobe. His EEG showed us this.
Thank you Glenn. I do know the difference of Meth and Dex. I really found you informative the first time, slightly annoying the next. I was just commenting on what I read on caf. How it destroys some front lobe or section of the brain. And how it does a better job with stimulants. You have taught me plenty, Grasshopper!
