I would suggest that you find a psychiatrist to evaluate and treat you, at least until you find a combination that works. General docs are fine unless you have difficulty.
Psychiatrists know far more about treating comorbid conditions. (more than one mental disorder) The also know far more about which medications compliment each other and in what dosages.
Before you make an appointment, call the psychiatrist's office and ask, "Does the doctor treat adult ADHD? Does he/she prescribe stimulant medications for adult ADHD?" If you get two yes anwers, then you are on the right track.
Best wishes! Let us know how it goes?
Reisa38765.7864467593Thanks i will do that for sure. I will let you know if i have any success.Hi i am new to the board and have been newly diagnosed with ADD and my Dr prescribed Adderall XR 10MG i took it for about 2 weeks then moved up to 15MG since it wasnt doing anything well i did have loss of appetite but that was it Oh and major Yawning not because i was tired though its like i just cannot get a deep breath but i have no extra energy or focus i am not jittery NOTHING good or bad. Anyhow so them my Dr thought i should take the reg. Adderall so i started that 15mg in the AM and the late afternoon and NOTHING its been about 2 weeks on that and i dont know what to do.. i dont know if i should go back and tell Dr because i dont want her to get the wrong idea. BUT i know i should not have done this but i decided i would double up for a few days to see if i felt ANYTHING different. and i took 30mg in teh am and 30 at late afternoon and THE ONLY effect its had is the yawning/unable to catch a deep breath... which i had at the beginning when only taking 5mg in am all the way to taking 30mg in the am... do you think the yawning could be something else all together??? and if so why do you think the Adderall hasnt done anything at all??? i would say maybe i dont have ADD afterall but if that were the case i would at least have some reaction to the drug..right? PS I am taking 25MG of paxil CR for 4mths..Please any advice would be great...
also the DR i am at is a general Dr and doesnt seem to know to much about add or the Adderall is there Dr's that specialize in it? and if so how do i find them?? thanks
There is anew medicine out now called Focalin. I take it and my story is posted below.Hi my name is Matt, i am 15 years old, and i have been diagnosed with ADHD. I was diagnosed with it when i was about 5 years old. I was climbing up anything, if i could get a grip on it i would climb it. I have been on medicine every since. For awhile i was off of it and then things started getting out of control, when i moved in with my aunt. I started argueing and making her really mad at me. I didnt understand why i was making her mad and why i was always getting in trouble. I have been running from my problems every since i got off the medicine. The reason i didnt want to get back on it was becasue the klast medicin i was on, strattera, made me really really sick. My doctor said that this was normal for some people because it is a non stimulante. After speaking with him and my aunt about the medicines and learning about them more i agreed to give the medicine another try. I now take a new medicine called Focalin. It seems to help me when i am on it but from what my aunt has said you can tell the diffrence from when i am on it and when i am off it. I have never really had any problems in school i am just very arguementative and very impulsive. I now know from reading about my disorder that it never goes away. I just have to learn to control it. I am working on controling it by trying to tell myself to slow down and think but it is truly a battle, a battle inside. it is really really hard and no one really understands me and how hard it is to control it. I am slowy understanding myself and how to control it i just think it will take some time. I am hoping by signing up to this board and posting this message that i will find people my age and others with this disorder to talk to. Please feel free to contact me and post on this message.
Thank You,
Matt

adderall is only one of many meds that can help ADHD. As was said above a GP (your family doc) can help with basic simple problems but if it doesn't work he/she can only refer you to a professional. Get your parents/doc to get you in to see a psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD. They can not only find a med at the strength you can get benefit from - they also can council you on making ADHD less troublesome and learn new ways to cope.
It can be hard enough to be 15 I remember all too well. But 15 and ADHD can be a very torturous way to live. You couldn't pay me enough to go back and relive that.
Do get help - make it known what you did (they won't judge you) and move along with getting treatment. It's worth it believe me.
I recently got in trouble, well not so much trouble, with the law because i could not stop argueing with an officer of the law and this is when i was off my medicine. I just couldnt stop myself.
