Hi Sandi:
Well, on Friday I got another call around 12:45 that Maggie had another headache. As I mentioned, she has never complained her head hurts, so I am sure it is from the medicine. Her speech teacher also e-mailed me and said that on thursday she could not function and she kept complaining that her ear hurt. She kept asking for me also. I am going to call the doctor on Monday to see what he says. I didn't give her any of the medicine this weekend and she didn't complain at all.
Does your daughter have a phonological speech delay or anything specific? Have you ever heard of apraxia? Maggie has had a burst in language about 3 months ago. She was due for one though. Her progress has always been slow, however steady.
I found a website that sold the Coromega for .99 as opposed to the others that were .99. The GNC here was also .99. Let mek now ifyou are interested and I can pull it back up.
Was the tsp. helping your daughter focus better? Maggie has a hard time attending and is pretty impulsive and has a hard time sitting still. She isn't extremely hyper and on many days still takes a 2 hour nap. Mostly only on the weekends now due to school though. She has always been a pretty good sleeper.
Did you notice any rebound effects on your daughter? I would think there would be some, especially on 1 tsp. only once a day. 5 milligrams is not a lot for most people, but I think that Maggie just cannot tolerate stimulants. Our pediatric neuro mentioned to me over the summer when I initiated the stimulants conversation that they may not work for her. She didn't say in what way, just that a lot of children that young it doesn't work for and maybe it will when she is older.
I've been reading some posts about magnesium and plan on looking into that. Have you heard of people using it?
Sincerely,
Brigitte
Hi my name is sandi, i have a 4 year old daughter that we are in the process of treating for possible ADHD and/or PDD-nos she is very hyperactive and staying on task is a real issue for her, she also has some speech delay problems, so our psych. has put her on liquid form of Ritalin due to her not being able to swallow pills right now called Methlyn. She did super on it for the first 2 weeks then she slowly became what I thought was being stubborn (not so sure now) , and then started having terrible temper tantrums lasting about 1 hr everyday. She also has given me problems going places that she normally has no problem going to like School, or the bowling alley for her brothers Saturday League. She all the sudden would not get out of the car and when I finnaly got her in these places she acted like it was just a terrible place to be and she wanted to leave. She would throw herself on the ground and not get up. She even hide under a table at the bowling alley where normally she is running around so much I have a hard time keeping track of her. The pschy. told me to take her off for this week, but I am not sure what will be next. Can anyone shed a light on this for me.....Hi Brigitte
I am not sure what to lable my daughters speech delay I have never been given any diagnosis but that she was at the time of testing last year 1 1/2 yrs behind in development, in both spoken and spoken to.
I would think that the meds would have caused your daughters headaches, after reading the side effects that is one of them. Yes my daughter did focus much better for the first two weeks but after that just got mean and stand offish about things. Just plain wierd and not herself. Her teachers told me she just didn't want to be bothered and did not want to participate in anything where as before the meds she would at leaste do her work stations or what ever for a few minutes and then get fidgitty with it. She is very antsiey but she wiull sit still for something that hold s her interested unfortunately like spong bob or something unecducational like that. That is my fault though for letting her watch it. But she is very hyper especially when she knows I am not watching with all eyes.
I have read about magnesium too and would also like to try this but I am having a terrible time finding other than in calcium tabs. Let me know if you find out any thing about this.
Thanks again for your reply
Talk too you soon.

Hi There.
I'm not going to be of much help to you but I read your post because we started my daughter Maggie, 5 1/2, on this a few weeks ago. For 2 weeks it was only 1 mg and now we are on 2. I don't think there is any real difference yet. How many times a day are you giving it? We are only starting with in the morning before kindergarten.
We tried Adderall last month - one 5 mg xr pill along with 1.25 of the short acting. So total mg's were 6.25. She had a terrible day. She was crying a lot at school and acting like she was on speed. They didn't know what was wrong with her (I didn't tell them she was starting it). Then after school she threw up her breakfast (didn't eat her lunch). I felt horrible for her and couldn't wait for it to get out of her system.
The reason we are using liquid is because you can start with 1 mg and work your way up. Maggie can't really swallow pills either but with the xr form of medication I would open it up and put it into applesause and have her take it that way.
I've heard that Ritalin has some stronger rebound side effects than some of the other medications.
Sincerely,
Brigitte
Well Brigitte we started her on what I think was way to much for her little body at 5ml which is 1 ful teaspoon once a day in the morning before her early developmental class. worked great for first two weeks then wham she just was not herself very uptight about things and not cooperative about anything. Normal activities like going to school, or watching her brother bowl were like taking her to a haunted house where she just didn't want to be there. My brother in law is a family doctor and he did tell me that sometimes this type of med can cause mild psychosis where she could actually think people are trying to get her or just see and hear things, kind of scary. SHe has been off now for about three days now and seems to be better frame of mind but now she is starting to poop her pants again , where on the methlyn she did not have one accident and was very concerned about making sure she didn't have an accident. Now she just doesn't care again. I am very confused right now but in the same note hopeful that there is something better out there it is just a matter of finding it.
Is she on 5 cc's or 5 mg's? I think 1 tsp. is almost the same as 5 cc's. I just had to go to Maggie's school to give her some tylenol. This is her 4th day on 2 mg and she has been complaining her head hurts really bad. Maggie has never said to me ever that her head hurts. It is usually her tummy. Maggie has a severe motor planning speech disorder so this is wonderful that she conveyed her head hurts. However, I have a strong feeling that the meds are giving her a headache. I'm going to give it to her again tomorrow morning and see what happens. I wonder if this type of side effect usually wears off after a few days when the body has adjusted to the new dose. How much does your daughter weigh? Maggie is 5 1/2 and very little for her age. She looks more like a 4-year old and weighs about 36 lbs.
I have been giving Maggie something called NeuroLink. It has 5-htp, L-tyrosine, and GABA in it. I'm also going to look into Neurobiofeedback. I have a strong feeling that Maggie cannot tolerate stimulants - any type. We previously tried her on 5 mgs of Adderall and it was horrible!
That is very scary what is happening to your daughter. It sounds like maybe the dose is too high. Something is definitely going on with the meds. With your daughter's speech delay, is she able to tell you how she feels? Maggie can talk to me in sentences now but she is still about 2 years behind in her language due to the apraxia. Plus, she is too young to truly understand what she might be feeling due to the meds. She saw me one morning putting the liquid methylin into her orange coromega (fish oil) and she didn't want to take it.
Brigitte
THank you so much for replying to this post. I am so glad I am not alone with this med problem. My daughter is or was on 5ml which is one teaspoon every morning. She is about 38 lbs and is quiet tall for her age I think. But anyhow I feel that maybe she is not right for these stimulants either. Her speech delay is hard to explain, she is about 1 1/2 to 2 yrs behind in speech but is improving everyday. She had not at all regressed in speech but never really said much more than 2 and 3 word statements at a time but is much better now about 5 mabey even 6 word phrases sometimes sentences not often though . She can tell me she is sick and what hurts and if she needs something knows how to ask for it. But she also talks a lot of babble especially if she is playing make believe or has an imaginary friend around she babbles very fast and sometimes I get one or two words of what she is saying. When she slows down she can talk pretty good, but still not complete sentences all the time. I really coldn't sit and have a conversation with her without helping her to answer most of the questions. She is learning at her own pass though.
You mentioned that your daughter takes orange coromega, funny thing I just went out today as a mtter of fact and picked this up at GNC along with Childrens DHA chewable gel tablets hoping that these might help her a little to focus more. But her really big problem is she is like the energizer bunny she keeps going and going until she just falls asleep.
I do think though that the amount of methlyn was way to much for her littler body to handle.
Please keep me informed on how your daughter does on the 2mg of this I would be interested in finding out.
What are all your daughters symtoms??????
I am very curious.
Talk to you soon
