Wanted to know if anyone has taken or knows a lot about using this for ADD? I think its been used in other countries for ADD but I haven't found any solid clinical trials on testing it for ADD, just a lot of speculation. As of this time, I think its only label use is for Narcolepsy.
still would like to hear if anyone else has tried this or know for sure when it will be approved for us?
I have heard that it works best with the stim meds but with the pice I dont know if i'll ever get the chance to find out. I read in an artical that the FDA will have its final ruling on it for ADD on the 23rd of this month, I guess we'll see what happens.did you use it alone or with other meds?
Provigil with Lexapro
but not stims then? No, it was instead of the stims, most of which I had tried by then.let us know how its working
My psychiatrist says it has been approved for ADHD but the insurance companies are not approving it for payment. My son just started on samples - hope the insurance companies come through soon.......
I think that the makers of provigil are trying, or it may have already been approved, to market a new version in the US called Attenace, which from what i've read is the same thing only they tweaked with it and made the dosages even higher. I believe that the MG's goes all the way up to 425mg per tablet, which if you ask me is just another stupid marketing ploy and patent protection since the "Attenace" is the same as provigil, only it has more dosages that start as low as 85mg <sarcasm>(oooh like a person would really notice the difference between 85 and the standard 100mg it comes in) and all the way up into the 400mg range. I think Cephalon's little magic pill has run out of steam and doctors are finally realizing that this is nothing but crap, expensive crap at that (5 for 30 pills) and maybe for some it may prove to be helpfull, but for the majority of us with ADHD, I dont foresee any benefits. I think that Cephalon needs to realize that just because a pill will keep you awake, doesn't mean it will help the core symptoms of ADHD.
I guess what I'm trying to convey is that there is no magic pill. Medication, in my opinion, should be used as an "aide" along with other types of self discipline and therapy if needed. Drugs like adderall or any other stimulant or depressant in my mind are simply like band aids, they are a quick fix and do work, but dont cure the underlying cause. Again I want to say everyone is different, and I'm glad I found this message board. Reading some of the threads has been very interesting and again proves what I have thought about us people with ADHD all along, we are intelligent individuals, above average and the medications we take for this does not make us king of the world, it simply allows us to live up to our full potential.
I think the attenace is just an extended release, which for the most part is just another marketing ploy too. there have been times when I have had real clarity and focus, not to mention I could remember stuff easily but they have been on rare occasions. I may never find a chemical combination that reproduces that but it gives me hope that its possable and motivation to keep searching. Although I think the odds are greatly against it, I do believe a cure is possable, but I'm not going to hold my breath. On another note.... I would like to see some studies with brain imaging and parkinsons disease drugs. I know its off the wall and a long shot, but if they can detect lower levels of dopamine in our frontal lobes why not see what they would do on an imaging scan. I'm talking about things I know nothing about so it may be somewhere between abserd and impossable. anyway, just random thoughts like always......
Provigil was the first thing my psych rxed me for ADHD (also samples, that junk is expensive CRAP) and I have to say that after just 2 weeks I stopped taking it because (and I know everyone is different) provigil will make your neck/shoulder muscles to "lock" and you feel like your wearing a head brace. My psyche no longer rx's provigil nor does she plan to because as she told me, every patient of hers from age 6 - 65 it helps for the first few days, then its nothing but side effects. My therapist also told me her own daughter who is 10 only took provigil for 3 days because she couldn't handle it.
I had some samples left and thought I would take one (200mg) with an Adderall xr 20mg, and bad bad idea for me. Provigil has a long half life to begin with and then on top of that the xr of adderall not a good combination. I guess if I was a fighter pilot I would love it, but once I had everything done, all my papers written, my apartemtn cleaned from top to bottom washed my car, did everything that and OCD person would do when it came to cleaning, I got bored cause I did everything so fast and gave it 120%.
Also one more trivial thing about provigil, is that once you do actually fall asleep, I wouldn't call it a crash as its pretty smooth and you dont notice its wearing off, but you know when it kicks in, trust me, once you fall asleep be prepared to sleep for a long time. I think it put me into a deep long sleep (about 15+ hours of sleep) and woke in one of the worst moods, took an adderall and ahhhhh I felt better and didn't feel like ripping someones head off for waking me, even with 15 hours, didn't seem like enough. I guess since its an anti-narcoleptic that keeps that little center on the brain on, when its closing time, its night night for a long time. Whereas adderall works on the CNS mostly once it wears off you can sleep just fine.
I received this the other day regarding the med you are asking about; however, the warning is for children only>

FYI
On Thursday, FDA’s Psychopharmacology Advisory Committee voted 12 to 1 to
reject approval of the drug modafinil as a treatment for ADHD in children.
FDA safety officers had similarly recommended rejection because of a link to
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a potentially fatal skin disease that usually
results from a drug reaction. However, FDA administrators had pushed for its
approval. On Wednesday, the FDA Pediatric Advisory Committee handed the
agency a mixed message regarding warnings about selective list of
psychotropic drugs prescribed for treating ADHD symptoms. The following
seemingly contradictory news reports reflect the pediatric committee’s mixed
message:
The New York Times: "Stimulants like Ritalin lead a small number of children
to suffer hallucinations that usually feature insects, snakes or worms,
according to federal drug officials, and a panel of experts said on
Wednesday that physicians and parents needed to be warned of the risk. The
panel members said they hoped the warning would prevent physicians from
prescribing a second drug to treat the hallucinations caused by the
stimulants, which one expert estimated affect 2 to 5 of every 100 children
taking them."
I tried it for ADD. I found that I was more alert, but still unable to concentrate or get motivated. Kind of like how I imagine a rabbit.
