weight gain and dry mouth seem to be the consensus...
I do know that this is also sold under the brand name ELAVIL. the main action is to increase serotonin levels (in addition to mood, serotonin regulates pain tolerance and host of other bodily functions like regulating the bowel and immune messaging and many more.) elavil is a trycyclic anti-depressant, most people don't take them anymore because of the drowsiness effect......but they are used for sleep, migraines... and for people who have serotonin deficiencies - like ssri's won't work for me because I don't produce any serotonin for them to multiply....
I am also considering the elavil/amytrptaline (sp) and going off the prozac.... since it doesn't seem to be doing anygood... I also take trazodone for sleep, but I could probably substitue the elavil since it has the same drowsiness affect and would probably be more effective for my serotonin deficiency.
Maybe a dosage decrease for your son.... or maybe he'll just get used to it after a week or two...?
Thanks Glen. I was thinking about it. Then when you said the weight gain and dry mouth, it rang a bell. He is eating more and drinking alot more water now. He's under weight, so I am fine with that. I am going to ask the dr if he can lower the dosage. But, I don't know if it comes in lower doses.
compaired to depicote, (sp?), i am thinking the amitryptelene is safer.
I did a bit of looking around on it for ya ogram. The only main complaints are weight gain and dry mouth. Seems they are giving amitryptelene (and nortryptelene which I gather is very much the same thing) for everything from fibromyalgia to other pain-related problems. So the concensus so far is it's pretty safe when used as directed with mild side-effects.
he has been on it for 3 nights now. He is falling asleep faster, but waking him up is a bit harder, than normal. Not bad enough to alarm me. I am wondering if he can take just 5 mg, we see the dr Tuesday, I'm going to ask. I am happy with the great way he sleeps now. before, he was a bit restless, now, he seems to go into a deeper sleep and is not as groggy in the mornings after i wake him up. he does sleep longer. I was just wondering if there are any thing i should watch for. I've searched on the net, and every thing seems to be the same as a sugar pill w/ side effects. But, i cannot complain. he's doing great. He seems to be happier during the day, now. Not that he was sad before, he just seems well rested and more happy. So far so good. thanks for the response.Ogram, I've been taking Amitriptyline for several years, as needed. I'm so proud and so stubborn, I didn't go to the doctor for help although I'd not slept the night through in ten years (since the death of my eldest son). I finally broke down and got an antidepressant AND Amitriptyline. The doctor prescribed 10mg, but she said, "If one doesn't work, take two. If two doesn't work, take three.". So I guess 25mg isn't very strong. I've never taken more than one. I can never tell I've taken it...like I don't pass out asleep or anything, but it helps KEEP me asleep. The doctor told me that if you cannot fall asleep, that's insomnia. If you fall asleep, but awaken alot and can't get back to sleep, that's stress. STRESS it is. The best part is that on Tylenol PM or some of the over the counter I always felt bad the next morning...Amitriptyline gives you no hangover.
