My Daughter had reading comprehension problems and it wasn't caught until she was a senior in High School. Most of her school years was in Florida and it was never brought to my attention. We moved to Alaska and one of her teachers asked the kids to write down what they thought their weakness in school was...my daughter put down that she had a hard time understanding what she was reading. Her teacher put her into a special reading class for just 6 weeks...and my daughters ready comprehension improved 90%.
By the way my daughter did nothave ADD...Just a reading problem.

thank you! that was a relief to hear.....
The only way i got testing is to say it is my childs right to be tested and our right as a parent to have it done. Then we got it. The severity is irrelevant. Anything effecting the kids education is the point. Good luck we were denied cause of the psychologist a team evaluation. They claim our son is adhd. We disagree. My Daughter had reading comprehension problems and it wasn't caught until she was a senior in High School. *update*---school counselor just called me & she is going to talk to the teachers to see what may be going on here. she said then she will meet with the child study team & will call me back in a week.....i hope they help this time...
As far as the eight year old, my son is twelve, and I don't think he could do eight pages of math homework in one night. Was she trying to do all of it at once?
As far as the fourteen year old, I would conference with her teachers in person, so you could get a clear idea of what they think the problem is. Do you have any ideas or suspicions?
ok--last night my 8 yr old had some homework to finish....it was a practice math packet that was supposed to be done by mar. 1st. now we have alot going on during the week....i even have to make time for OT/PT, because school doesn't think a 'mild case' is enough & they won't test her....long story....anyway, last night my daughter was so overwhelmed with these 8 pages, she started to bang her head on the table. then she was cryin.
and my 14 yr old (not diagnosed)---well actually she has TBS (teenage brat syndrome).......her teachers keep in constant contact /me via email & the history teacher emailed me this morning & told me he just gave her a 70 on a paper she did this weekend... he also said there IS a problem & she doesn't seem to 'comprehend' what she reads...now what do i do?
You might even want to take the staple out and just put out the few sheets she needs to do at a time so she is not as overwhelmed with the task, thinking about what she has left to do on future nights. Adders are so visual - it might help!I agree with Lillian.....I would rather shoot myself in the foot than try to make my son do that much homework at once....When Tommy has make up homework due to absences i only make him do a couple extra pages a night in addition to regular HW, otherwise its meltdown city.......
Try and get her to focus on one page at a time, she may need to take a small break after each page or two (Iknow it takes forever that way but its better than having her not do it at all)
Good luck sweetie
lillian----yes she was cramming a months worth in......i have a difficult time with her doing homework...any way......i found the packet yesterday....it was easy though 8+7=, 15-7=,etc....just practice, but to be handed in.
i've been thinkin' for a while now that my oldest may have add or adhd?can this appear at age 14? wouldn't i've known this already?

we have until Mar. 1st, she did 2 pages last night.....but i will take your advice & never do that again! thnx.
thanks koko & barb too! barb---i will talk to the teachers, but what is a PWN?You can talk to the teachers of your 14 year old and if they really believe she has a problem, they can refer her for the school to do testing. I couldn't get them to test my son the first time until his teacher told me she thought he had ADHD and then, with my permission, requested testing herself. The teachers will be able to give them input as to where her most serious problems are so they can know to test those areas if they don't automatically do a complete eval.
To get him retested, I just requested it in writing and asked for a PWN if they were going to refuse.
I didn't need a teacher involved then.
