concerta question | ADHD Information

Hello, My 13 year old daughter was just put on 18mg of Concerta. This is her third day. She is complainong of stomach cramps, is this normal at first, and will it go away?, or should I try something else?

Some people get cramping when taking concerta.  I think it may come mostly from the diuretic (dehydrating) effect.  Make sure your daughter takes in extra water before and after taking her pill.  Also monitor her eating - it can cause loss of appetite and if she isn't realizing it and not eating of course that causes cramps.

I found on my dexedrine that I sometimes get cramping also from med-created IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).  I'm not saying this is it but if so it's caused by reaction by the smooth muscles in the intestine to the meds as they constrict against the normal rythym.  If this is the case there is a very mild IBS med called dicetel that can be checked on with the MD you have.  It has no side effects other than gas and is very decently cheap.  But do check.

Most side effects go away or lessen over a month to 3 months.  But as with any med record the side effects (including severity and when they occur) and bring that info into your MD.

Also - if there is any severe reaction (if it seems severe to you then consider it that) then you can stop concerta right away with very little problem.  Then bring the issue up with MD on next visit.  Just make sure you make your MD keep at least monthly visits as he/she is supposed to monitor things like blood pressure/pulse, weight loss/gain and other issues to avoid problems.

Best wishes!

Not normal.

Does she normally have cramps?

Concerta's active ingredient is methylphenidate, which is quickly metabolized and excreted from the body through urine. It's half-life in humans is less than 4 hours.

Keep her off it for a day or two, then put her back on it.

Ask her doctor.

Good luck.
