Homework struggles again... | ADHD Information

So, I am sitting here listening to my husband get frustrated and my daughter whine and cry because they are trying to accomplish 3rd grade math homework now. I have to walk away.....so I sit here and look for support from anyone here that will listen...Teach her it all the easy way. Most likely  the whining is doesn't get it is why. I am a past ld adult. I have to agree to do it the easy way but sometimes that will get the kid in trouble with the teacher who wants it done a certain way.  I can't help ya we have the same problems here.

The simpelest way possible. To bad how teachers want it as long as you get the answer correct. Not everyone learns the way the book says to do it. I don't must have just like said or I don't get it. What grade is this for and will try and help?

Elementry math help math made easy video's. I hear how great this is.

oldtimer38776.6778587963What is the thing you are needing help on?How does she remember best?If it's auditorally she needs tape help. I will be glad to pm you my phone and try to help.

I hate to tell you this, but I have found that hiring someone to tutor my son and help him with his homework has been much, much more effective than trying to help him myself.  It's his ego or something.  He doesn't mind saying, "I don't know" to a stranger.  Getting a homework tutor is one of the best decisions I ever made.

Sometimes, schools supply them in after-school programs.  You might want to check on this at your daughter's school.  Because your daughter is in third grade, you can hire a tutor pretty inexpensively, by hiring a local teenage babysitter.  The concepts are not complex enough, yet, for your daughter to need an expert in the subject.

I am haveing the school to provide the tutoring. Hs kids here are busy with sports or a job. Being a homework tutor is a job .What do u mean by the easy way?Lillian - the school was willing to reduce his math homework only on his CSST before we got the 504. The principal suggested it. I have found that all schools seem to follow a little bit different path and interpret laws differently even though it would be so nice if everything followed a more set procedure. Then things would be so much more clear. [QUOTE=Luvmykids02]

Hi all......it isnt uncommon for many children with Adhd to have great diffficulties with math, my son did and still does. Homework in general was a nighmare in my home until I understood the complexities of the problem. These children actually try harder than anyone but problems with executive function present extreme limitations that create extreme frustration for Adhd child and leave both the child and parents banging their heads against the wall.

Dr Russel Barkley, a world reknowned Adhd expert who has Adhd and also has two children with Adhd has done extensive research on the role that executive functions play in Adhd .

Below is a link that may give parents a better understanding with regard to the complexities involved and why so many children with Adhd struggle with math or reading and while many Adhd'ers have average to above average IQ's, difficulties with exectutive functions may prevent them from meeting their full potential in all areas if life. The article also provides strategies that might be helpful. If you find this article helpful or any other articles pertaining to the subject, it might be a good idea to pass these articles on to educators so that they have a better understanding which also gives them more insight in terms of the challenges these children face.

Your very welcome

What kind of math is she doing Multiplcation or Division? I find math somewhat Easy........if she's having trouble with Multiplcation for example Example 6 times 2 tell her to add another 6 and she'll get 12 if that doesn't work get some construction paper light in color and make a multiples board from 2's to 10's until she gets up to 11 or 14 and if it's the doubles for example 12 times 3 put a piece a paper over the 1 do the 2 times 3 and then after you get that answer you put the paper over the 2 and then 3 times 1

Koko,

If the school allowed your son to do a reduced amount of homework problems, the school was giving your son accommodations, which should only be part of a 504.  In other words, the school was giving your child 504 accommodations, before legally giving him a 504

Math has always been a struggle for us.  Last night ds brought home 32 pre-algebra problems along with 3 science assignments, reading and add in practicing the saxophone.  He didn't get into bed until 11 and didn't fall asleep until midnight.  He gets up as 7 am.  And he worked so hard and really focused.  I have noticed that he doesn't really mind algebra homework if he can keyboard it and it goes much faster, too.  I'm going to ask for reduced homework next year.   When things got really stressful with math homework, we talked to the school about how rough things were with the homework and got permission to cut it by 50% temporarily. (every other one) Later when we got the 504 we got to cut 25% temporarily (until middle school). Now he just gets extra time if he needs it, but he is on meds now and does his work more quickly.

You might meet with the school and tell them things are very rough and your daughter is getting very discouraged. Ask if you can make sure she does every type of problem for homework but a fewer amount.

Good Luck!
my 3rd grade daughter was hitting her head on the table a few nights ago because of math!  i think it was just too overwhelming for her also.....My son who has a severe learning disability, the homework he gets even with his iep is crazy. He just does his best, and if he doesn't get it he leaves it blank. It doesn't help that we have the best school district in our town so his sixth grade work is like a seventh graders.I would help your daughter the best you can, and hopefully it will sink in.
