Does this sound right to you?

There has to be a better doctor/office out there. Our initital psychiatrist visit was 1 hour. Subsequent visits are 30 min. We don't have a med counselor. All our questions are answered.

That sounds like a poorly managed office and a bad situation. That is NOT normal!
Koko38779.5352777778I did not realize I could reply back to what you said (duh). I love this website I have learned so much and have many new resources to look through. I did not think what my daughter was going through was normal. I was relieved to see that others agree with me. Unfortunatly it has just gotten worse. I contacted my daughters Med. counsler to get the achievment test results and she said that my daughter did not finish the test and she would not give the the results. The day the test was taken she stopped the test to take lunch then had me come back to finish the test. Before I left she said my daughter had done good and would have the results shortly. So clearly she lied to me. After she said I could not have the results I asked for her supervisors name and she refused to give me any name and said the name I already had was incorrect. The receptionist also refused to tell me the supervisors name and said it was against policy. This has turned into a ugly mess. No one will call me back and I am pissed . I want this woman fired. She has no buisness working with kids, she does not care about their future. Anyone have any advice?

In your shoes, I would write a letter requesting all your daughter's medical records (you have a right to them) and send it certified mail.  And I'd be on the phone today looking for another doctor to diagnose and treat my daughter.  Sorry it's been so trying.  Good luck.

Can't you research the facility online and find someone in charge, like a CEO? Or call human resources and ask? Or go to the facility and look at the doctor's in the directory and find the one with the right title? Do they have job postings? Who is doing the interviewing? Or go there in person and tell the receptionist that you want to know who in the facility handles formal complaints and what the procedure is. Heck, if you really want to get pissy, arrive in the morning right when they open and the tardy employees start arriving. Then just ask every person who walks through the front door if they happen know the name of the director of the facility. Stand out front if you want, and the receptionist won't even know what you are doing. It sounds scary to me. I'd find another Psychiatrist, get a revaluation, and make sure, if she's put on meds, that the doctor himself sees her for each appointment. A med counselor is not a doctor. Very frustrating.  No, it's not normal, it's not professional and it's just plain rude. Sometimes the quality of care you receive is not according to your needs but according to which insurance card you bring to the office. Luckily you still have choices. Clearly the office you are dealing with is not meeting your child's needs. Even people with Medicaid, which is most restrictive, have choices. Time to look for another office. A good person to ask for recommendations is the school counselor, or your pediatrician.  Also ask people from your neighborhood or church. If you still can't find anything any better than who you are dealing with then call your insurance company. The toll free number is on the back of the card. Tell them what you told us, that your child needs to see someone else, and they can make an exception by giving you more options out of your network. If they say they can't, ask to speak to a supervisor. They can make exceptions and they will, but only if you ask. I'm sure you already know that you have to advocate for your child. Don't accept mediocrity. Your child's future is at stake.  My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD in first grade, she is now in second and her teacher informed me that she has already failed this year. She lives with her father and until last year he was taking her to her appointments. I started taking her to her appointments in August 2005. In the last several months I have experianced what I would call questionable quality in the care she recieves. I don't know if I am making to much of nothing or if these are common pratices in all mental health facilities, so I would like to ask if this sounds right to anyone else. She goes to her Med Counseler once a month and the Med Counselor has never spent more than 20 minutes talking to my daughter. She has seen her Pychiatrist twice for 15 minutes each visit. In between these visits with her Pychiatrist he upped her dosage with no consultation based on the Med Counselors opionion,(after she spent less than 7 minutes talking with my child). I have twice been given appointments on the Pychiatrists lunch breaks, so I sit there for 1 hour before he even comes back from lunch. Last week at her second appointment with her Psychiatrist he changed her medication from Adderall to Metadate CD after asking her one question. He then sent me out with absolutly no information on her new medication, he just handed me the prescription and ushered me out the door. I had to hunt out a brochure to find out at least the basic information. Also during that visit the staff and I witnessed a woman with two poorly dressed and dirty kids, she was very obviously on some form of speed and the staff was alerted to the fact she was on speed. They let this woman drive off with her kids instead of calling someone safe to come get the kids. Then finally last of all was today, my daughter had a appointment with her Med Counselor for a 2 hour Achievment Test. I got there 20 minutes early, she showed up 30 minutes late. When she did show up she said she only had 30 minutes for my daughters 2 hour test because she had made another appointment and that my daughter would need to come back and finish the next day. When I asked her why she made another appointment when she knew my daughter was going to need two hours for the test she changed her mind about the other appointment. 1 hour and 15 minutes into the test she was already half a hour late for, she brought my daughter to me and informed me she was going on her lunch break and I would have to bring my daughter back when she returned. When we did come back she was 15 minutes late and only spent another 20 minutes with my daughter. I'm not a pro and I've only been doing this a little while but I feel like I know laziness and unproffessionalism when I see it. I know this was long and I apologize, I hope there is someone left reading who can/will tell me if I am correct or not. If this is not normal I would like to get my daughter some where else.

It is very unprofessional! I am amazed at how poorly you are treated.

The teacher can't fail your daughter without your permission. Is she getting help under 504 or and IEP? If not, they really need to try those before they can fail her.

Not only is being late and cutting the appointment short rude but unprofessional especially during a testing time.  I've had a psychiatrist change meds with no appointment before but that was when we having real issues and I called and talked to him personally.  I do have to say that my psychiatrist appointments were usually no more than fifteen minutes so that part seems normal to me but if you are uncomfortable with the quality of care that is all that matters.  I suggest that you change.  I am actually not comfortable with the doc my son is seeing so I am taking the steps to get him to a new doctor.

In a word, no, this doesn't sound right to me.  I would seek out another facility to treat your daughter.

Well, one thing for sure is if you are not comfortable with the person you are dealing with CHANGE! Whether it is normal or not if you don't like it you need to find someone who you are comfortable with. But in my opinion this person sounds to be very unprofessional. Our doctors have NEVER changed our appointments on us and have never cut an appointment short. If necessary they cut time out of their schedule to extend our appointment(it has happened more than once) In our experience it is not uncommon for the med counselor to have relatively short appointments. We spend 1 hour appts with the behavior therapist, 1 hour with the psychologist and 30 minutes with the med counselor(who in our case is a PMHNP) But she didn't write any perscriptions for him until she had already spend 3 appointments of 1 hour each talking to him and I. She doesn't start the 30 minute appointments until she is done evaluating a child and just needs to maintian the level of medication.

I would call anonymously inquiring about services for your child's dx, get details on what type tx/guidance provided/length appts would be provided by a med counselor and psychiatrist. Then I would sent a detailed complaint letter to the director of the facility pointing out exact areas of failure based on what was suppose to happen. And I would never return. I would be stompin' mad in your shoes.

I hope you have contacted the principal about the teacher failing your daughter already. (I wonder if she has stopped trying to teach her??) It sounds like you need to request a team meeting immediately.

I would not only seek another doctor, I would report the current doctor. There is obviously something wrong with her standards. That shouldn't happen at all. Best of luck to you.
