Doc Visit & FDA Advisory Perspective | ADHD Information
We had a med checkup for DS yesterday, and I talked a lot to the doctor
about the FDA advisory on ADHD meds and got his take on it, so I
thought I'd share that here.
He thinks there is higher cardiac risk in adult patients taking
high doses of ADHD meds. He did not think that DS (7 yrs old, healthy,
Ritalin LA 20 mg, normal BP, etc.) was at risk from the meds he takes
right now.
That being said, he feels it is more important than ever to be
continually evaluating and re-evaluating the medication being used, the
levels being used, and the child's situation. What he wants to avoid is
unwarranted increases in medication that may lead a child to become an
adult taking high (risky) doses.
He actually wants us to experiment with taking DS off his afternoon
short-acting Ritalin that he usually takes after school. I must've
looked scared, because he immediately said, "just try it; it's okay if
you decide he needs it."
Basically, the message was be cautious and use medication judiciously.
