What is your son's diagnosis? What was the Tenex prescribed for?
According to The Bipolar Child by Demitri and Janice Papolos, Tenex is a blood pressure med that appears to be less sedating than Clonidine and to have more of an effect on attentional difficulties. The side effects include irritability, fatigue, confusion at higher doses, and rarely, agitation. Both Clonidine and Tenex can cause mood swings in bipolar children. If a child seems unstable or irritable on Tenex, its use should be examined.
My nearly 13-year-old son is on 0.1 Clonidine at night to help with sleep and to control tic activity. He has a working dx of bipolar disorder with ADHD, anxiety, tic disorder and migraines.
My sons diagnosis is ADHD/GAD. Tenex was prescribed to help with impulsivity. I had a talk with my son this evening and found out that he is having trouble with some students at school bullying him. So his problem right now may not be a med issue at all. Just the timing of the med change and situation at school. He was misusing his lunch account at school buying tons of extra snacks and running thru his money too quickly. So I stopped sending money for him to put in his account I just give him enough to buy his lunch. Well is seems as though these ohter children who were taking advantage of him and making him buy them snacks aren't to happy that he can't buy them stuff anymore and are threatening to beat him up. Go figure.
