DITTO!
When I asked about omega's, the doc's response was that they hadn't been tested. And this woman has an ADD kid! My son likes her and other than that, she's been terrific. I haven't had a chance to try some of those therapies, but I have decided if I do, I'm not going to ask her about it first.[QUOTE=MissouriMommy]Can you believe my son's psychiatrist actually laughed at me for asking him if it was ok to give my son flax seed oil and other supplements with the medication he's on? I'm sorry...but I fail to see the humor in keeping my options open in finding ways to help my son. Perhaps if he was doing a better job I wouldn't have to ask such questions.

Unfortunately, we don't educate our medical professionals on any kind of alternative forms of treatment. Medical professionals who do know about it, usually went out on their own to find out. Our pediatrician has NO idea what we are doing (when I tell her) but she also recognizes she is NOT at all educated on alternative forms of treatment. We use a Naturopathic Doctor who was also trained in western medicine. Our pediatrician supports what we are doing, mainly because it is working and she knows she is ignorant about these methods. However, it does not surprise me in the least that your doctor did not know a thing about Omegas -- such a shame though! Sorry that happened!
Did you pay his bill? When they asked for payment, I would've laughed at them just like he laughed at you. Guess he's a pharmacuetical man all the way.....to the BANK.I am so sick of dr.'s who don't take us parents so seriously! I give supplements with Dr. supervision cause plants are un healthy these days. Only a dieatician knows and studies about this and dr's. study drugs. This is why we have not been else where with our son . When I mentioned it to our Dr. I didn't get laughs but I think I saw a slight eye roll.
I'm sorry this happened to you. No doctor should laugh at any question. Have you thought about finding another doctor?I have a new doctor that someone suggested to me on here lined up for May. That was the earliest we could get in. I guess I'll have the LAST laugh won't I? lol.IMac38945.511724537My past pediatrician didn't medicate before 3rd grade. She also said add and adhd can be confused with bp also. I just started my on son flax seed oil and attend I figured it can't hurt.
last year i had him on strattera for about six-eight weeks it just made him so tired and he lost alot of weight it broke my heart so i took him off.

Close minded people SUCK
With all the information out there, it makes no sense to me why a doctor would not at least read up a little so that he/she is aware that there are other options out there.
I have read though, that the Omega3's from fish oils are much more potent than those from flax seed, and that it needs to be the correct EPA to DHA ratio. There is a lot of good info on the "alternative medicine" thread.
I was taking Omega3's for a few weeks and there was a mild BUT NOTICIBLE improvement.
Good Luck
I disliked a Dr we saw and ins. told me we have to have to pay this pill even if you are unsatisfied. Reason is if insurance in contracted with that dr. they must pay anyhow. I payed the copay but never returned and complained to head of that departmant. Neurology in this case. DR. NOEl Baker Children's medical Dallas. SHe really didn't hear us out and called it a behavioral thing. I am fortunate, our psychiatrist reccomended that ds take fish oil and b complex. I really like him. He gives his e-mail address out and wants to be e-mailed every 4 days after a med change, more often if there are problems. He probably dreads my e mails.
our doctor recommended behavorial therapy and homeopathy as jude is not foryet and here in scotland they don't give retilin under 5 year.I am glad for your son that straterra worked out for him. When we
first talked of meds for my son I wanted to try Straterra but both is
therapist and ped were against it. They felt it would quicken his
already quick temper. We started with metadate and then went to
concerta. They both worked well but dump him late in the
day. Then we see frustration!!! And that quick temper!help4myboy:
My son is on Straterra and you really don't see a difference as to whether it works until about 3 months on it. My son had upset stomach and was really tired, but after 3 months it evened out and now has none of those. It gradually got better each day.
i asked my docter and he said not to because if he has enough in his system then it could hurt him in the long run but that is what meds will do i have an appointment with a new child phys. on june 29 was refered by a friend of a friend. hope it is all good really getting tired of my son being looked at as a trouble maker and he is only six and even have prek teachers tell me i can request a diffrent teach for my 4 year old that starts next year in a joking manner and he is not adhd at all just a bit stuborn what is happening i am started to wish god would just kill all three of us together so we do not have to go through all this
AAAAGGGGHHHHH!! Why is it that doctors only trust what they've been taught?? I know that sounds odd, but really, how do advances get made if we all stick to the status quo? Gandi believed that the world would be a better place if we all ate flax seed. Flax can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels, and was recommended for that purpose by Dr. Atkins during the early days of his diet mania. I take flax oil supplements because I believe they help me maintain a balanced emotional life. Good for you for dooing whatever you can to assist your child. Even if it might not help with ADHD (and ten years from now it may be a normal course of treatment), omega-3's certainly help with other health issues, which sometimes get overlooked in our zeal to "fix" that one big problem.
Good luck! Whatever did the world do before there were pharmaceutical companies?!
You know it is my theory that our world and health care are sort of run by pharmaceutical companies and you cannot patent nature and thus cannot make any money from it!!!really getting tired of my son being looked at as a trouble maker and he is only six and even have prek teachers tell me i can request a diffrent teach for my 4 year old that starts next year in a joking manner and he is not adhd at all just a bit stuborn what is happening i am started to wish god would just kill all three of us together so we do not have to go through all this

Now you're going to hear the true "southern woman" come out in me here, so don't laugh......
Lawd, Honey! Don't let ignorant people get to you like that. I know it's hard but unfortunately the world is filled with ignorant people. You know that movie where the kids says, "I see dead people"? Well..."I SEE DUMB PEOPLE"
Just find a good support system, and just by being in a forum like this you're on the right track and ignore the idiots. Your son needs you to be his biggest fan. Don't give up on him or let others define who he is....you tell him everyday that he's the best thing that ever happened to you. Good Luck and God Bless.
