Newly Diagnosed | ADHD Information

Ask the psychologist that you worked with for a dr. recommend. If the dr. has a relationship with the psychologist, he/she will probably trust their diagnosis.

I just went dr. shopping yesterday. It is such a frustrating process, I have suffered through some real DOOZIES. I have found that I actually know more than some physicians, and at least 1 psychiatrist about this (and NO, I'm not a narcissist). I do a lot of reading, and just plain 'ole experience. Here's what I did that might help. I made a list of questions and just called the offices and talked to the secretary if the dr. wasn't available. Actually, I got my referrals from The Amen Clinic website, under "Patient Resources," I think.

Here was my basic list of questions:

ADULT ADHD?  (Some only work with children. I ask if they have experience with Adults)
NATURAL AND PHAMACEUTICALS? (MOST psychiatrists and physicians only want to go straight to meds. They are experimenting to some degree. I can usually tell when they say things like 'This is supposed to do X."  I have literally cured a long-term, clinical depression and anxiety with Omega 3  and Liquid B vitamins. I have been on Paxil, Prozac, Effexor, Wellbutrine, and Xanax and the side effects are horrid for me. So, now I try the natural before anything. Most doctors are not open to that. I have found a GP that goes natural first, and yesterday I found an ADHD psychiatrist who is open and knowledgeable about both.)
WHAT'S THE SCOPE OF HIS EXPERTISE?
ACCEPT INSURANCE? (A lot of psychiatrists surprisingly do not accept insurance. Weird.)

Hope that helps.

I have diagnosed with ADHD  by a psycologist who suggested I see my doctor or psychiatrist regarding medications , since I have not seen a doctor in a long time I made an appoint. with a new one for today my question is how do I go about bringing up what medications are right for me I've been reading how many doctors are reluctant to prescribe meds and my first psychiatrist appoint is not for a few weeks but am getting anxious to start meds as soon as possible. Any suggestions?

Harleyjak,  Do you have a report from the psychologist you can give to your physician.  Each physician is different but adult ADHD isn't really in the realm of most regular physicians yet.  You may be lucky and have one that is willing to work with you.  The only way to find out is to ask.  I know how the waiting can be really hard once you find out.  I was just diagnosed myself a little over a month ago.  If this doctor won't work with you I'm sure the psychiatrist will.  It is really good that you are getting a physicial though becuase some of the ADHD meds can cause side effects and you should know what your normal is.  Also, there are some conditions which affect whether you can take some of the ADHD meds.  Good Luck today at your appointment.  -Gettingagrip-
