Report Card | ADHD Information

I received my son's kindergarten's second term report card today and was very happy to see the results. It read that he has shown improvements in all areas. He is able to stay focused for increasingly longer periods of time and with encouragement, he's able to accomplish some tasks independently. He's also improving his relationship with others during class time and enjoys playing at various centres.

Also, despite his ADHD dx, the school will continue on giving him the .5 support per day; plus language arts center 3 times a week. I'm sooo glad about this. Technically, they could have pulled his support but I'm thinking they'll keep it as is until the end of the school year. Yeah!! :)

There are still some areas of concern but he's coming along nicely.

BTW, I noticed him getting agitated at school during the PM recently. I stopped giving him the magnesium and his behaviour seems to of gotten better. Anyone have a similar experience with this? I'm going to start giving him 150mg again. I had increased it to 300 mg at one point but I'm thinking, by his reaction, it was too much.

Also, his school's speech path has assessed him and was able to pin-point some of his challenges. I'll have to read the report once I get it. Now that we know more about his issues, it'll be easier to set things up for him.

We had an appointment with the audiologist as well and it turns out she will be testing him for Central Auditory Processing Disorder. The speech path didnt think it was necessary but I did tell her that if the audiologist called her, to support this motion. Hopefully she will. This process will start at the end of this month.

Ok, I've been rambling. I'm in high spirits and am glad that things are finally moving forward. I was a little discouraged recently because appointments kept getting cancelled and we were in the lull with the paraprofessional team members. I can breathe now.

:)

Oldtimer, his speech path did say that he has difficulties sequencing together 3 or more items together. I'm not sure if this is part of what you mean, besides the obvious. As for his daily achievements, I see them all the time. I'll take your pessimism with a grain of salt though. Thanks anyway. I'm happy with the news I've got. I really needed it.

Susieb, thanks for your support. It does feel good to see such progress. He sure has come a long way. Even his speech path told me that it looks as if he's entered a new phase now. All the hardships he's gone through is a time of the past (at least it appears so for now). That was very hopeful to hear. Thanks! :)

inabox,

glad to hear of you son's progress.  it's nice to have some sort of concrete info- to as you said, "set things up for him". so his dx will remain adhd but he may possibly receive sp/lang services?  if they conclude he has capd, will he recieve services for this as well?

i have been brewing over whether to request an audiometric test for my son.  he's had a couple (age 4 and 6).  he has many of the capd problems but most significantly, many auditory processing "glitches".

really glad to hear that they will continue support services- i know you have been concerned about this so YAY!  no wonder you are in high spirits!

Terrific!  When I see progress with my ds, it makes all the hassles worthwhile!!! Congratulations to you and your son.
ClapClap My problem has been our sons card looks great but doesn't always match daily grades. This is the only thing we go by daily work that's it. Nothing else. I am glad for your child. Capd will generaly not be found til around 8 our sons at 6 was borderline results. If they can't follow 3 step directions it is pretty sure the results are poitive. This was told to me by someone we know who's child and sister tets for it. I guess than at 1 it should of been caught in our son.

kppy, he's already been receiving speech/lang support which has nothing to do with the ADHD dx. He's been going to this therapy since he was 3. Now that he's in kindergarten, the service will continue through the school but it's not all that great. This school year, his pathologist has only been able to see him twice. However, she's been assessing him so at least we're heading on the right track. If they conclude that he has CAPD, I'm not sure what sort of services he'll receive but I don't imagine he'll be receiving any. I think it just may fall into the speech/lang category that he's receiving support for already.

My son has the auditory 'glitches' as well. Here in Canada, it's actually very difficult to have this testing done (CAPD). I was told that I'd need the school's referral; a psych. evaluation; and a speech reports. Even after all that, he could still be disqualified. Apparently it's quite an extensive assessment to go through. I was actually really surprised that this audiologist was so willing. She wants me to have my son's ears syringed and wanted him back in her office ASAP. She even bumped us up so we could finalize the standard testing we had to go in for today and wants to start the process as well - end of March. I'm hoping that the speech pathologist isn't going to talk her out of it.

If there's a shadow of a doubt, see if you can have this done. It's better to be safe than sorry - that's my thought. I'm not sure how your system works there.
