Hypoglycemia & ADHD | ADHD Information
'm 19 and have been hypoglycemic at least since I was 12. I've been diagnosed with ADD abotu as long. I inherited the hypoglycemia, but not the ADD. I find that there is no real overlap in my symptoms actually. The onyl trouvble my hypoglycemia gets me in with ADD si that my Adderall keep me from wantign food and then i have to FORCE myself to down food just so I won't pass out. It's a real pain. I miss wantign and enjoyign food.

For me, I am 32 and was diagnosed with ADHD about 8 months ago. The meds have really helped out. Like you I have a major hypoglycemia issue as well.
My hardest sugar crashes are at night, and I better get some ice cream or something quick or I am a REAL BEAR!!!! After that, everything is OK. I can then go to sleep and do it again the next day.
If I skip a meal!!!! Oh brother, "Houston, we have a problem!" I love to ride so there is not always a place to eat when you would "like" one. Hypoglycemia and ADHD and the word "like" equate to "GET MY ASS SOMETHING TO EAT QUICK OR THERE'S GONNA BE TROUBLE!!!!"
I know exactly what you mean but, my meds do help out with the concentration and I am fairly more in tune with my body now.
Before meds I used to wake up in the morning and literally dry heave for about 5-10 minutes everyday. Hypoglycemia is the absolute worst! Before being treated for ADHD I had insomnia really bad. So adding the other physical anomoly into the mix of course I would be sick every morning. Now, I have not had that problem for at least 5 months now. Plus I eat more regularly and more balanced meals even when riding all day.
Did you happen to see my post?
Yes, I think that hypoglycemia definitely affects my ADHD, and possibly contributes the seizures I have been having.
I'm trying to determine the best diet, but so far it looks like complex carbohydrates and protein are the answer.
Boy, is it hard having food prepared for the day though. I am
constantly in hypoglycemic crisis mode, and I know it is hard on my
pancreas. The trick also seems to be to eat something quality
BEFORE I am hungry. Once I am hungry, all bets are off. I will crave
sugar and simple carbohydrates, and I always give in to my cravings b/c
I just can't stand it. Next thing you know, I'm taking a nap, drinking
coffee (horrible for me), or popping a Ritalin. It's a viscious cycle.
I'd write more, but I have to go eat now.

Honestly, I was so confused. I didn't really make any connection to
either. I just know that when my blood sugar gets down, I am almost
'unreachable.' I can't carry on an intelligent conversation, snap at
people like I'm having PMS, scarf junk food in a very unladylike
manner, and then feel the need to take a nap...in short, I end up
feeling like a wreck. If I really want to complicate things, I just add
a cup of coffee, and I can manage to waste time and feel extremely
crappy.
I wasn't dx'd with ADHD until I was about 35, so it was a long career
of feeling weaker and inferior to other people somehow. With me, it is
such a tricky balance to keep things just right. On top of that, I just
really don't feel like eating or bothering with food half the
time. :(
UGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
Any one hypoglycemic w/ ADHD how do you feel having both effects you? Do you think refraining from high glucose foods helps with managing ADHD?
