This is my first summer since my son was "officially" diagnosed with ADHD. I was wondering what everyone does with their kids in the summer so that they stay on track. I work at least part time and usually leave them with my mom. But, it is an unstructured kind of day.
Has anyone found a good alternative?
How old is your son? Mine is 6. I purchase the Bob's Books series from a Early Workstation toy store, and we read every night, going through the books sequentially during the summer. Also for this summer I have compiled work that I think we can continue to practice based on completed classwork sent home by the teacher. So, basically I do it all myself. None of the summer programs in my area are academic. It is all play.
my son is 7 and he is planning on going to day camp and to amusement parks...he will also read every day but he does not have any issues with academics so I will just let him play and go to the pool. I am going to try to take him off of his medication so he can bulk up a bit.
our son is 8 and is REALLY big into model trains. we started out w/ thomas and just promoted him up to HO scale electric trains. He gets lost in the spare bedroom for HOURS! he has designed an entire city w/ them. It's wonderful to see his creativity. this summer will be different, though. We bought the Lexia program. It's the same reading computer program that his school is using. So, he will go back reading better than ever (i hope).
.IMac38946.4489467593We send our daughter (almost 9) to several different day camps during the summer that combine play and learning. Some last for a week, and some for just a couple of days. This gives her something to look forward to. We also have a big swimming pool in our yard for her. She can busy herself with playing in the pool or under the sprinkler for hours at a time. She also takes part in the Summer Reading Program at the library, and continues with her usual gymnastics and swimming classes at the Y. This summer, she may also take children's art classes at the art museum.steppingstone38788.8132986111Due to my sons learning problem, he's 12 with adhd they make him go to extended school for the Summer. It starts in July and ends sometime at the end of July. He hates it but has to attend. He also used to go to summer camp, it was an outdoor camp from 8-4 everyday lots so swimming, sports and stuff like that. He loved it, and would have gone this year but we have decided to go away on vacation instead.I try to reiterate what was learned the year before to avoid the summer slide. I am a stay at home mom who does part time college and I will be doing classes this summer as well. I try not to over structre in the summer but I do try to get him lots of outside time to wear him out. I continue medication over the summer though for my own sanity. My son is 7 and this is our first summer since the ADHD diagnosis. It was suggested to us that we keep him in a "structured environment". I checked into some ADHD summer camps, but they are very expensive. Plus, he really doesn't want to go! We do have a big pool, a big play room, and I am usually home by 2:30 in the afternoon.
Ogram, what is the Lexia Program and how long does he use it per day?
