lintris, my son also would not qualify with the school OT...I have him going to a private OT ( insurance pays some)...the criteria for getting OT help in the schools is still something I don't understand but at the private OTs I see lots of kids like mine working on handwriting...our doc wrote a prescription for me to take to the private OT for an evaluation

Hi Everone! This is my first time ever writing on a message board. I have a seven year old son that was diagnosed with ADD in the 1st grade. He is now in 2nd grade. He is my only child. He is a sweet and loving child when he wants to be. My husband , my son and I are going to a therapist to help with his behavior. The problems we have are probably tipical of all ADD children. I am going to my PPT meeting tomorrow with his therapist. I have asked his teacher how is he doing in school? She answered me twice saying "Well you know that he gets a get out of jail free card because he is in the special needs program." I finallly told her that I hate that statement and please don't say that to me because it upsets me. My son has alot of trouble with writing. I work in the library at school and noticed a couple of 2nd grader's writing and was totally shocked at how well they wrote in comparision to my child. I asked her today how is he doing and her answer was he has alot of trouble in writing. (the spelling, getting his ideas done on paper, writing the letters write etc.) What can I say or do in the PPT meeting to make sure he is getting the proper help he needs for his writing? Thank you in advance for your help.Hi lintris,
writing difficulties are common with kids who have ADHD, my son also hates to write...I have taken him to an OT and this has helped 100%...also I work with him on his spelling and found that he is a tactile learner and it helps to trace the letters big on a chalk board and then use water on his finger to trace over again, finally he will trace using his finger on the table and then he gets the word...also I have him use the Handwriting without tears program...you can find this program online ...it was develped by an OT and works wonders....you may also want to look into dysgraphia this is a LD in the area of writing...
Good luck
Our son is almost 9 and he's in third grade. He's been diagnosed with ADD. He's done much better academically after he started taking adderal. Still his writting and reading were an issue. We got him in KUMON and it has helped him a lot. It is not very expensive (about 0 per month) and you have to stick with it for few months before seeing any difference, but it works. About two weeks ago he had to write couple of paragraphs for homework and I panicked, well he did it very well without too much struggle, the next week it happened again. I think it's working.

Good luck
Hi Lintris, Handwriting continues to be one of our hot button issue with the school. We had to switch teachers at the beginning of the school year because the teacher refused to acknowledge that my son has dysgraphia, even with a letter from his psychologist stating what it is, how common it is with adders and that he has it!!! Ugh. We have tried several things and honestly I don't know what gets the credit for the improvements in handwriting. Was is the interactive metronome because it helps with motor sequencing?? Anyway, hang in there and I am sure you will get some more helpful advice from this bd.
mghp, I am going to look into kumon. We have been going to mathnasium just as a supplement to school but it requires the child to be self motivated, not enough supervision for my guy.
