Hello,

My daughter hasn't been diagnosed with ADHD but I am taking her to the doctor on Tuesday because she is always being disruptive at school.  She won't sit still and this is the same at home, she finds concentrating on new tasks really difficult and gets easily distracted.  I find that I have to constantly repeat myself and end up shouting at her.  Sometimes I feel that I can't cope with her and she is always talking Ruth gets up at 5.50 every morning and goes to bed at 8.00 p.m. sometimes she will play in her room till around 9.00 pm.  As soon as she wakes up she is on the go literally bouncing off the walls.  Is this ADHD and if it is how should I try to anage it?  Ruth is 6 years old.

                                             Yours Sincerely

Suzanne, welcome!  Unfortunately, we're not doctors and can't diagnose over the internet.  However, I will say that your daughter has some symptoms that should be looked into.  What kind of doctor are you taking her to?  If it is her pediatriction, I would highly recommend you ask for a referral to a neuropsychologist, who can assess for many childhood disorders, including but not limited to ADHD.  Peds are wonderful first-line resourcs on childhood illnesses, but they can't possibly have the skill to diagnose a complicated neurological disoder like ADHD.  Furthermore, ADHD has many mimickers, and in my experience, a neuropsychologist is the best at sorting it all out.  Good luck!

I have adopted 5 boys, 4 of whom are ADHD or ADD.  Your daughter definately has the indicators.  I applaud you for bein a parent who recognizes and is doing something about it.  So many parents let their children suffer without help.  Do go further than your peditrician, but see if you can get some meds right away.  If they don't give it to you, ask if they have the Conners for Parents and Teachers.  The time it may take to see a neuropsychologist or child psychiatrist is all the longer that your daughter is suffering, and beleive me they are suffering.

But i dont think asking for meds right away is the answer.SHe needs to see the neuropsychologist or someone before any meds are put into this child. We did all the steps for our son and just did the best we could before any meds came into play.We went without meds for a year, did'nt hurt him any.He was only 5 at the time,so like i said we did what we could do.We saw someone that deals in only ADD/ADHD first,we learned different things to do with our son, meds came in when he was 6yrs old.And i dont want you to think iam not one for meds, our son is now 14 and takes Concerta 63mgs once aday and Clondine for bedtime. He is doing great on the meds.
