Thanks guys,
the doc started him at this dosage because he was on concerta 36 before we switched...I am going to bring him down this weekend to a lower dosage, the doc said that he is a very hyper little guy but I agree she should have started us a bit lower.
JoeMom - I hesitate answering this b/c my Adderall experience is limited, but here's my 2 cents: First of all, I'm 190 pounds (27 yo) and take 10mg of Adderall per day (for 6-8 hours of benefits). I realize this is a small dosage but it works for me...so far. If my doc started me on 10mg, I would wonder why your 6 year old, probably a quarter of my size, would be started on 30mg. Granted, I'm no expert, but that just seems absurd. Why not just start a kid on 5mg, wait for some improvement, then work your way up IF NECESSARY?? Secondly, the impulsive talking is supposed to be a symptom BEFORE the meds, not AFTER. (I stress, in my humble opinion...) impulsive talking while on the meds suggests being "high" on it, i.e. too much. The right dosage is supposed to have a calming effect, limiting the impulsivity. Personally, based on my experience with Adderall, there's no way in hell I'd START my 6 year old at 30mg, nevermind increase it because they're talking too much.To me that dose is scary but then again to me any kids on psych meds are scary so I don't know if my opinion counts here. I would check his pulse at rest an hour after his dose. I would also check his pulse after aerobic activity and monitor for signs of dizzyness. With any dose I would watch for signs of depression, and crashing in the evenings. Most of all trust your instincts. You know your son best.
Hi, my son is 6 and a half and he is on Adderall XR 10 mg right now but has adjusted and needs more I think, it does not seem to working anymore but he weighs only 37 to 38 pounds, how much does your son weigh cuz my Dr. said that 15 mg is the max for my sons weight.
Wow, it sounds that alot of these docs don't know much about dosage, huh?
I'm on Adderall xr 10mg a day, which is my starting dose for any ADHD meds. I go back in a month to report on this dosage. The doc also gave me a supply of 10 mg pills of fast acting Adderall to supplement during the day if I feel I need more. I took 1/2 of the extra dose one day around 1:00pm and felt so jumpy. The next day I took only 1/4 a tablet of the extra dose and it seemd to give me a little boost I needed the rest of the afternoon. I had found myself getting real sleepy before I took these extra booster doses. However, today, I took my extra 1/4 pill at 1:00pm and again, I feel like I'm climbing the walls....heart palpatations, jittery, etc. Does anyone have any experience with this and maybe tried another drug with better results? Just curious.
Hi everyone, My six year old son has been on adderall for the past month (30mg)this medication has improved his focus 100% and as far as completing his work and homework he is now the same as his peers and grades are good...the problem is that when we first started the teacher commented on how chatty he was and how he wanted to talk, he would often interupt and shout out during class discussions...I told the doc and she said it was impulsivity and wanted to increase his meds by 5mg...I am having second thoughts and perhaps this dosage is just too high..I read some where on this board that too much adderall= too much talking...does any one have any Ideas...what do you think if I dump out some of the beads as a test over the weekend?
I'm an adult on Adderall and seems like that could make a difference but, when I started Adderall, my boss commented that I wasn't compulsively talking out as much I never realized I was doing that. I take adderall xr 20mg + wellbutrin xl 300mg. I am so much calmer and talk a lot but not impulsively. Not sure if this helps good luck.
