keep going and insisted that you know something is wrong. I listened to a doctor and got on with it until we were at breaking point and we wanted our then 12yr old lad out of the house after 6yrs of hell. The doctors listened then after he spent more and more time out of school. 2yrs down the line he's on medication. it helps to some degree. What centre does he attend? Have you heard of Y.I.P (youth inclusion programme)? My son will never attend proper school again, but YIP is a great help and have offered to help teach him so he can still take his maths, english and science exams. He is a bright child he just can't handle authority figures including us!
If you get in touch privately and let me know which county you live in and I'll try and find out if there's a Y.I.P in your area.
pullingouthair38792.6453587963Sam, welcome! You need to have your son evaluated by a board-certified child psychiatrist as soon as possible, followed by an evaluation by a neuropsychologist. A teacher, nurse and pediatrician do not have the skills necessary to diagnose and treat complicated neurological disorders. I'm not a doctor, but it sounds to me as if you're looking at more than ADHD. The sooner you get a proper diagnosis, the sooner you'll get your son the help he needs and deserves. Good luck.
hi my names sam and i have a 10 year old son billy who i love very much but i am struggling to get help for him. He has been exculded from school almost perminatley and goes to a centre on Thursday for children with behaviour problems as they cannot cope with him in school.
Billy show all the signs of adhd all of the time at home aswell as at school but as are school senco ( special needs teacher ) assessd him at school over 12 months ago and said in her opinion she didn't think he had nothing else was said on the matter
I could stay here all night telling you all the things he has done and all the problems he has had but it's just to long. I guess the top and bottom of it is I just want to help him get the best out of life and at the moment he's so unhappy and has such a low self a steam am at a lost as to who to turn to.
I have been to the nurse, doctor aswell as the school but they just say he'll grow out of it, my concern is that he is now becoming older and i feel i am losing control of him totally, only yesterday he tried to strangle his younger brother.
Can anyone give me an advice on who to turn to go for help and advice
Thanks for the advice I find it very hard here to get any sort of help and if you do the waiting lists are unbelivable long but am gonna keep on to find the root cause of his behaviour problem I love him so much and just want the best for him if I don't noone will.
Hon, if he tried to strangle his brother, there's a lot more going on than ADHD, and stims can make it worse. There's a good chance the kid could have early onset bipolar, which is often mistaken for ADHD, however these kids do tend to be extremely rageful and violent and, no, they don't outgrow it. Any Psychiatrist can help you. I doubt a second opinion will tell you that the child has only ADHD, and therapists without the MD aren't as good at diagnosing as those who have one. NeuroPsychs are also good. Schools, social workers and even pediatricians are pretty clueless about most childhood disorders. If the meds aren't working, and he's not even able to go to school, I strongly suggest doing everything you can to reassess him. I have bipolar, and it's progressive if the disorder isn't controlled with the right medication, stims and Straterra not being in the mix. I have a few links you can try: Big red flags for bipolar in kids are any bipolar, depression, substance abuse or suicide attempts on either side of the family tree--it is very hereditary. Take care and good luck!
