5 Year Old Grandson’s ADHD | ADHD Information

Share

My grandson has just been diagnosed with ADHD - his focus was OK, but his behavior and impulsiveness was so far out of control it was dangerous.   The kindergarten (private) has warned they may not take him back.

My daughter recently put him on adderal - started with 5mg up to 10mg.  He did so much better - but the side effect we can't handle.....first, his appetite is totally GONE.   He lost 7 pounds in the first month (59 to 52 pounds).   We've tried everything to get him to eat.   No luck.   Next, he develped what I'll call some "tics" - he blinks his eyes rapidly.   The higher the dose, the more blinks.   Lastly, sleep was not as good.

Can anyone with the same experiences offer some advise?   We're desperate.  He's such a smart child - but we're not able to take him places or have normal childhood experiences with him without the meds.  Can't take him to the zoo, park, out to eat, etc.   We love him so much.   HELP.

How old is your grandson? If he is very young, sometimes ad/hd is dx's when later something else is found to be going on. Who did the diagnosis?

I read quite a few posts about children who lost too much weight on adderall.  The tics don't sound good.

. Our son was put on Focalin XR because they thought he would eat more. The downside is it only lasts 8 hours. That is all some need. Others take short acting focalin or some other short acting when it wears off, to help in the late afternoon/early eve. My son eats great - for him.

I'm told pediatricians often prescribe adderall. With the tic issue too, I would go to a ped. psychiatrist if you don't already.

There are many different meds for adhd i would go back to the dr and try something else.
