Barkley's book is very good. I have a couple bookshelves full also, but if I
had to pick one, it would have to be "The Explosive Child" by Dr.Ross
Greene. My son is 5 and has severe behavior problems, and this book
gave me a way to understand, accept, and work with his limitations. Taking Charge of ADHD has been a blessing at my house!!

thank you for ur replies..

I put a hold on Taking Charge of ADHD.. its nice to know what books helped more experienced parents...

Try Delivered from Distraction by Hallowell. He has a bunch of books on adhd and has it himself. There is also a book called Understanding Women with AD/HD edited by Dr. Quinn and Dr. Nadeau. Both Quinn and Nadeau are female and have Ad/hd as well.

The Explosive Child is *excellent* for making the mindset switch from 'he just needs to work harder to control himself' to understanding that it is something outside of control.  This sounds simple, but it totally changes the way you deal with the issues that come up.  It's not for ADHD parents explicitly, more for kids with CD and ODD, but it's still very helpful and applicable.  It's great for parenting kids who are ADHD-impulsive type.

I also recommend The Five Love Languages of Children as a supplement for any behavior modification program, or just to understand how to express your love to your child in ways that really make an impact.

I like stopping ADHD...this is an alternative type book that looks at the neck reflex STNR as being underdeveloped in my people with ADHD...basically it describes exercises that can be completed...look on the alternative board under crawilers unite and you will see a few success storiesmy doc said the same thing obut  books by Russell Barkley.  I bought Taking Charge of ADHD and so far it has been good.  I am only on chapter 3.

I guess i need a few ADHD 411 books, parenting an ADHD child, books with info on alternative therapies and the drugs used... etc... jus trying to understand whats going on and be informed the best i can

My doc recommended any books by Russell Barkley.  He has an excellent one called Taking Charge of ADHD.. some doc's say it's the bible for adder's.

For you experienced ADHD parents i was wondering if there were any good book recommendations.  I am searching for books and there are sooo many so i want to get your ideas on which are the must reads to help someone with a newly diagnosed child..

Is there any books on ADHD for girls.. i have read boys and girls symptoms and issues can be quite different...

Any help would be good...

Thanks.

Hi Tricia, welcome!  I've heard that books by Kathleen G. Nadeau, a clinical psychologist in the Washington, DC, area, are helpful in understanding AD(H)D in girls.  I'm sure her books are available on www.amazon.com.

Here's a link to information about Dr. Nadeau:

I have lots and lots of books about parenting and ADHD on my bookshelves.  What other topics are you specifically interested in?
